2019 Yamaha YZF-R6 Review | MC Commute

When it comes to raw handling prowess, and going fast around paved bends, few motorcycles perform better than Yamaha’s razor-sharp YZF-R6. For 20 years, the Tuning Fork brand has been stamping its middleweight 600cc supersport for riders who want to experience the thrill of sport riding.
--
Last updated for the 2017 model year, the more slippery YZF-R6 is powered by a high-revving inline-four engine that loves to scream-to the tune of nearly 16,000 rpm. Although the powertrain is 11 years old, the R6's I4 remains modern in terms of feel and performance courtesy its variable intake system (YCC-I) and adjustable D-Mode throttle mapping. It also benefits from Yamaha's 2012-gen YZF-R1 traction control system, a big plus for those who ride on the street, especially in inclement weather.
However its svelte, 420-pound curb weight and ability to eat up corners is where the R6 shines. More modern 2015-generation YZF-R1 suspension and more sturdy brake hardware make it a hoot to barrel into corners on. Factor in the MotoGP-derived body panels and full LED lighting, and it’s a motorcycle that looks as tasty as it performs.
Yes, its racy, yes, it’s not as forgiving nor as cozy to ride on the street as an MT-09, but if you desire a thrilling sportbike with a passable level of everyday street capability, you won’t be disappointed with the YZF-R6.

The way you talk about 600’s and 100+ hp being “nothing to write home about” is part of the reason all of these younger inexperienced riders are throwing their legs over literbikes right after passing their BRC. I will never understand why people say these things about middleweight sportbikes. A 400 pound machine that produces over 100 hp at the wheel and will run 11’s on the strip fresh off the show room floor and they’re still considered slow or “nothing to write home about”. Do as you please but I just don’t understand.

I feel you. In my country, I've trying to tell my friends that don't rush, get a 300cc-ish, those bikes will teach you a lot. But they didn't listen, they want the 1000cc bikes

Agreed, worked my way up to 1000cc super sports after many years of riding. Starting on a SV650s, ZX6r and then a CBR 1000rr. I've had other bikes since. Most people on 1000cc super sports shouldn't be on them. They just want to twist the throttle and hold on. Which is fine, they can do whatever they want, its their life. But they probably won't develop the skill to do anything other then highway pulls and are often out riding their own ability. I saw a 06 CBR 1000rr for sale in my area about a month ago. It was snatched up pretty quickly and two weeks later I saw it listed for sale again but it had be wrecked by whoever thought it was a good idea for them to buy it. I was in the market for a track bike and was pretty bummed out when i saw that.

600’s are quick but take the fact they are 400 and whatever lbs plus the riders weight and if your 6’1 230 lbs now your bike is about 650-700 lbs and the bike is still fast as hell unless your super morbidly obese but when you can get a liter bike for a couple grand more the quality and the amount of bells and whistles you get is actually a better deal for your money. Like for $11,500 you can get a 2018 zx10r krt edition with abs and comes with Quickshifters up and down, traction control, launch control, 3 power modes so you start off with it in low power with traction control to the highest setting and that’s making less power than a 600 so once your comfortable with your bike you can start taken your electronic aids off or lowered. That’s why a liter bike is worth getting but at the same time you can get a left over 2019 zx6r with abs brand new for $8999. That’s a steal. But 12 grand for an old r6 isn’t worth the money at all. I could have a newer faster liter bike for that price

In South East Asia, 300 to 600cc bikes are dreams of so many people - not to mention liter bikes, because they are VERY expensive, tax and registration fee are expensive, gas is also expensive, streets are always packed with people in combination with tiny roads and terrible traffic. Most of us get around town using 100 - 150cc bikes everyday. And here I am watching my European and American friends telling me this 600cc 100+ HP bike "doesn't feel too small" and "still a very zippy bike"... it just feels weird to me. LOL

@@cmfan6870 the sales numbers have dropped drastically over the past few years in this class of super sports. Hell, Honda isn't even gonna sell their 600 any more in the UK. @Miata822
@Miata822 4 года назад
@Andrew Humphrey Good choice for a first bike! As you likely know by now the hardest part of learning to ride isn't shifting, braking, or turning. It's learning how not to let cars kill you. Most first time riders don't understand that. The R6 makes it so easy to go fast and end up in a situation you weren't expecting and can't escape. If you later feel the urge to get something like an R6, and even if you don't, I would encourage you to go to an on-track riding school. Not only is it a lot of fun but you learn to handle your bike up to near its limit. That limit is probably a lot further than you think. I am jealous of you. Riding since the '70s, I still remember the first time I got on a "real" motorcycle. Those first years were magic, and well, it still is. Enjoy.

@@Unique_Racing Power can't make up for basic skills. It is important for new riders to master fundamental skills before adding power whether on the street or the track. Being able to extract maximum performance from any vehicle requires training and endless hours of practice.

Bill Kerr yea that’s because the price difference 😂 but I agree most people see a R6 for 12-13k than see an r1 for a couple grand more, that’s the issue honestly they need to make the 600cc cheaper compared to the 1000cc bikes to make it more appealing, but I took motorcycle courses and did everything the right way and everyone should also honestly

The reason the r6 doesn't really need traction control; Much lower and more manageable torque of the R6 when you first crack open throttle while leaned over vs the R1 with twice the tire-spinning part-throttle torque. The same effect applied to the Formula 2 GP 250cc road racers - they could corner even faster than the F1 500s because with less weight and initial torque, they could carry more speed and then pick up the throttle earlier.

@progste

@gooklogander7 4 года назад
@@progste bud theres copious amounts of videos on youtube them making around 110 to the wheel. 110 crank for a modern 600 is fucking awful nobody would buy them😂😂 the 636 makes 130 with ram air. You're 100% right about them choking it but it makes more than 100whp.. that's why they still can beat fz-09s mid to top end
@steve-wu7jp

@@gooklogander7 lol no it does not make 130 stock at the rear wheel. Maybe flashed with a full system.
@SHUJINCELL
@SHUJINCELL 4 года назад
@@steve-wu7jp True. Real world power with the ram air is something else. I think peak 130hp wheel stock isn't far off from what you'd experience on the highway. On a dyno without ram air you're looking at about 115hp to the wheel stock with only 70% throttle available on the factory ecu programming. Either way, Zx6r is easily the best 600.

Anyway, I thought my FZR was thrilling and so, I dont think I'll have any problem with the 2019 R6. I'm watching CBR600 reviews too and I will buy one of these bikes in the next couple months. Have you been on a CBR600RR? Which way would you go? Any big differences?

No power doing 60 mph at 4000 rpm in 5th gear aha. If Yamaha brought out a R7 triple with a 270° crank then you have the best bike on the market. The Rs 660 Aprilia will give it a run in SS class. More torque and more smooth. But it will be expensive. If you want to disable the abs take out the abs solanoid fuse 2 min job. If you want more steering bring out your trottle twist grip out on the clip on and put a 1 inch riser on the clip ons.

A lot of guys here obviously sucked at English in school and aren't very bright. Nothing he says in the video is inaccurate or misleading or deliberately provocative. He's talking in relative terms, objectively, and either says or insinuates several times that the bike isn't slow. People hear what they want to hear, I guess. Bear in mind that some people who watch this channel ride or are interested in riding very powerful bikes.
