Today I am talking to you from my attic, where it’s quiet. I am sorry it may be a little dark here. Some people talked about my two-seamer. Some say my two-seamer got really good with sharp movement. And some also notice my four-seamer is much better in this season. It got faster and even more effective. I have a lot of questions why this happened. I am going to answer some of those questions. I guess it’s going to be better explanation if I had a baseball. But I don’t have a baseball now. 1:33 Before the 2020 season, I was throwing my four-seamer like this. When I release a ball I was cutting outside of a ball. So it does not create a perfect vertical back spinning. It was like a slight cutter. 1:50 The more cutting, the less spin effectiveness. That leads to a bad fastball. In this season, at the spring training, I started to develop my four-seamer to be more effective. For example, I changed how to grip a ball. I also tried some other stuff. But it did not work out eventually. 2:10 I have a lot of breaking balls such as slider, so I think my four-seamer becomes even more effective if it moves like a little two-seamer. However, it did not work out as well. 2:40 [Someone interrupts him] I’ve got a baseball now. 2:52 This is my four-seam grip. I grip just like everybody else does. 3:00 In this spring, I changed it like this gripping a little left. But this did not work out. I almost gave up on developing my four-seamer. It seemed like there is nothing I can do about it. Finally I stopped working on that. 3:26 During the summer camp, my four-seamer was the same as before. Not good. After the regular season started, I pitched in a game maybe against the Pirates. In one pitch, I stop thinking about developing my four-seamer and I just threw a ball without any concerns. That was actually really good. It fits me. I thought maybe this is it. 3:51 Usually most of the pitchers make his inside arm face against the hitters. 4:12 What I did was making my outside arm face against the hitters. 4:23 - 4:31 I pitched like this. 4:40 With my arm fully stretched, just like making a clothesline in pro-wrestling. Of course this happens only in my feeling and in my mind. So when I take a look at my pitching video I am throwing a four-seamer just like before. 5:00 I was not trying to develop this intentionally. It just happened. After that game against the Pirates, I was checking back my performance looking at my spin rate or any other figures like that. I figured out that I actually released a ball in an ideal and perfect location. In that pitch, my four-seamer slightly faded away moving like a two-seamer. 5:42 Ever since I found out about this, I did the same stuff on my two-seamer as well. In fact, when I pitch a two-seamer, it’s not exactly the same mechanics as I pitch a four-seamer. 5:49 Here is how to throw my two-seamer. My arm moves almost just like four-seamer. When against left-handed hitters and throwing a front-door pitch, I build a very thin glass wall towards a hitter in my imagination and I try to throw my two-seamer just along with that wall. You get it what I am talking about? My two-seamer must not crash the wall, yet the ball should stay as close as possible to the wall until the ball reaches to a hitter. 6:48 This two-seamer did work well even if it hits a little inside of the strike zone because it moves way towards the outside zone. With this new two-seamer, it gained more power. So a hitter cannot make a clean and good contact against this two-seamer and only makes it a foul ball or a swing and a miss. When you throw a two-seamer and want to make it more effective, it’s not just about the number of spin you make. It’s about how hard it is and how powerful it is. 8:00 A lot of amateur players may try to increase their number of spin, but it’s not about that. In fact when I compare the 2020 two-seamer with the ones before the 2020 season, it is almost the same. But the hitters’ reaction is different. So there should be something on my two-seamer. It’s not about data. So you’d better not to pay much attention to just numbers. 8:22 I don’t think I fully explained on my pitch. That’s all for today. Remember it’s not about your release point or spin numbers. It’s about changing your arm movement. I was lucky to find my solution. I could develop my fading away four-seamer, and I adapted that method to my two-seamer as well. When you actually throw like this with your arm fully stretched you may get injured around your shoulder. When you do it please do it carefully. You try this when you warm up or playing catch. 9:40 Next I am going to talk about the pitch tunnel. The pitch tunnel is a certain location that your pitch is supposed to pass until it gets to a hitter. If your pitch hits a pitch tunnel, it’s really hard for a hitter to tell whether it’s a fastball or two-seamer. The pitch tunnel is a new concept and gaining a lot of attention from pitchers around the world. I am a little skeptical about the pitch tunnel.
