Avoid undoing the strut brace (as shown in the video). The bolts are stress bolts, which aren't designed to be reused, though u can get away with reusing them once or twice. The one on the bumper end is torqued to 28nM and the other is 56nm. Instead of undoing the strut brace, simply unscrew the metal band clip holding the airbox top piece to the intake hose. It's only 1 screw, and it's designed to be reused. Much easier.
@@Gspeed35x those are TTY (torque to yield) bolts which are designed to stretch. They are recommended to be replaced after removal. Similar to a crush washer, many people reuse them without issues.
I still don't see how you would get the airbox off without removing the brace. Especially given that you have to pull up pretty hard to get the feet of the box out of the rubber grommets. I started to remove the hose and then found the box to be a pain to wiggle out of the area, so I just pulled the torx screws and replaced the filter with box in the car.
@@Fear.of.the.Dark. It’s how they do just about everything- no design thought goes into making things easier for the DIYer. They prefer you to take it back to the dealership where they can do it “right” using specialized tools and also find a few other things to bill you for. That’s just how it’s been for a while now.
Just got my X3, one of the first things i looked at was the that E14 screw. Mine is not a E14 surprisingly. It might be a 16mm but i haven’t tested it yet. But both the screws to move the bar were the same ones
Thank you for the video! Just replaced the filter on my 2019 BMW X3 M40i and had no issues. Man, it looks like it hasn’t been changed since I bought the vehicle. Was supposed to be exchanged on every 10K checkup. Apparently not. I plan to replace the stock paper filter with the K&N filter next time 👍🏻
Also, you may want to provide the proper torque information in the description for reinstalling of the main strut torque screw, which is 56 Nm or 41.5 lbs-ft.
I was looking at the K&N site and they don’t have anything posted yet as for the 2020. I’m sure the 2019/2018 are the same engine but they said they don’t back the warranty until it’s been tested on their end
Correct 2019 does not fit on the 2020. And currently there is no official 2020 part #, everyone can wait until it is released to the public. I dont want to share the part # publicly as if anything happens I am not responsible. This was purely informational on how to change out the OEM air filter as many other videos are a much lengthier and involved process of removing the entire air box for a simple air filter replacement. Barry Comer I dont know. I just make sure its tight. Measuring specific tq on a simple air box bolt is silly in my opinion. But there maybe a official guide somewhere.
