2020 BMW X3 xDrive30e Offers A Taste Of Electric Driving (Is It Enough?)

The all-electric BMW iX3 is not coming to the U.S. But the X3 xDrive30e is in showrooms now and it offers electrified driving. That’s because the 30e is a plug-in hybrid. Does the efficiency dull the Ultimate Driving Machine dynamics? How far does it go on a charge? Is the 30e prohibitively expensive? Tom Voelk has those answers and more and he checks out a fully optioned M Sport model.

I agree. Until 2011, I pooh-poohed hybrid vehicles as a tree-huggers dream. On a trip to SoCal, I decided to rent a hybrid to see what the big deal was. I wound up with a Nissan Altima that used the Honda hybrid powertrain. I made the mistake of buying a full tank of gas from the rental company; after a weekend of driving around the Pacific Coast, I returned the car with a half tank. A few years later, I bought a Toyota Avalon Hybrid. As great as that car is, I can only go about a half-mile at a crawl in EV mode. I like plug-in hybrids like the X3 xDrive30e because they are the best of both worlds. People who think hybrids are all like the Prius or Leaf should try more premium hybrids like the Avalon or this X3e because they are sooooooooooo good!

Thanks for another great review, Tom. I took delivery of my X3 30e March 31. The pandemic has affected my driving, no doubt, and probably resulted in more short trips. I plug in every night (120 only) and a full charge takes more like 10-11 hours (not the 6 you reported). The computer display says that I've driven 821 miles, 459 of those on electric power. My overall fuel economy is 57.9mpg, and my average speed 27.5mph. I stay in Max eDRIVE and Eco Pro modes but don't otherwise try to maximize electric range or fuel economy. As you say, the transition between electric and ICE is very smooth, as is the engine start/stop. I'm loving this vehicle so far. Oh, another point: that $5,836 federal tax credit can only be used in the year of purchase (it doesn't carry over).

Great video as usual. I own a 2019 X3 M40i. I love the car. However, I want to comment on BMW's use of run flat tires. I owned two 3 series sedans prior to my X3 purchase last year. Both models had run flats. In early June of last year, about three weeks prior to traveling to Spartenburg to take delivery of my X3, I was in New York City to see a play with friends. we left New York City around 9:30 PM heading back to Philadelphia. We just came out of the Lincoln tunnel and were on I 495 heading toward the New Jersery Turnpike when I hit a rather large and deep pot hole. At first we all thought we hit an IAD. That's how jarring it felt. I was immediately warned by iDrive that the front right tire lost all of its tire pressure but said I could continue to drive 50 miles or until I could find a safe palce to safely get off the highway, whichever came first. I drove about 25 miles and took the first exit off the turnpike and called BMW Assist. They sent a flat bed truck and took my 3 series sedan to the nearest BMW dealer. We then called Lyft and the Lyft driver took us the rest of the way back to Philadelphia. That night I became a fan of run flat tires because when I hit the pot hole I was in the middle lane of I 495. There is no break down lane of that stretch of highway from the Lincoln Tunnel to the New Jersey Turnpike. I am positive if the car did not have run flat tires and I had to stop in the middle of the road or even try to pull over we would have been hit by other cars speeding around the bend just where I hit the pot hole. With the run flats I was able to continue driving at 45 MPH until I came to the first exit heading South. Yes I had to replace the tire which was partially seperated from the wheel. Other than a tire replacement, minor repair to the wheel and a front alignment there was no other damage. Yes the replacements are expensive, they enhance road noise and they ride harder. In this instance I believe the run flats saved me and my passengers lives. Thanks again for the X3 review. I value your reviews more than any other reviewer.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 4 года назад
Great story. Thanks for sharing. One of my two experiences involved a highway pothole (not that big of one either) that damaged the tire so fast and completely it couldn't be driven on. The other (not a BMW), I brushed a curb turning out of a driveway. Again, quickly and utterly useless. That said, run flats worked for me on one occasion and I've used the repair kits very successfully on non run flats on a few occasions. My argument is that SUVs and crossovers should have a physical spare because a wilderness incident could be very problematic.
@vinalboy
@vinalboy 4 года назад
@@DrivenCarReviews I totally agree Tom. For me however, driving my X3 on a smooth dirt road is as much "off roading" as I'll ever do. Thanks for replying to my comment.
@migy5031
@migy5031 4 года назад
Run flats get a lot of hate from reviewers and commenters, but I insist on having them, especially on cars driven by my wife and kids. The extra assurance is worth the tradeoffs. I struck debris on the highway in the rain and was able to pull off at the next exit only to find a gash near the edge large enough to insert a hand. One potential downside is that those who drive longer distances as replacement tires may be hard to locate.
@JBM425
@JBM425 2 года назад
@@DrivenCarReviews Agreed regarding needing a spare for wilderness and off-road driving. For most highway trips, as long as I have AAA coverage, I don't necessarily miss a spare, and now that I'm well into "honored citizen discount" territory with a new body part failing almost weekly, perhaps it's better that I leave some of the stuff I used to like to do (yes, even changing tires was a satisfying experience) to someone else.

I rented a mid-size sedan on a trip this summer. I was disappointed when they didn't have one available, but they gave me a sweet, free upgrade for the week: a BMW X7. As much as i ***ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT CAR***, as a person who is usually the sole occupant 95% of the time, that car is a bit overkill for my needs. Even the X5 might be a bit big for me. The X3 is just right size-wise, and as the current owner of a Toyota Avalon Hybrid, I would really love to get a hybrid. I don't care for some of the things Lexus has done, so I'm really liking what BMW is offering. Pay a bit more, but get a better experience?

Fine review as always! I’m a current X3 owner and for me, mandatory run flats are a deal breaker. I’ll never, ever again buy a car with run flats. I test drove this vehicle last month. I had no intention of getting it since I'm anti SAV/CUV/SUV but I almost did. It's a really good vehicle and drove better than an F30. I guess that's more an insult to the F30 than a compliment to the G01. Anyway, a little FYI on trunk space. If you get the spare tire option on a regular non-PHEV X3, it's the same loss of trunk space. Pretty sure it's the same cover. So if anyone is curious and dealer has no X3 30e, ask to see a regular X3 with spare tire option.

One of Tom's competitors who goes into great detail about trunk space in his reviews (think the "Exclusive Trunk Comfort Index") also discussed that optical illusion of the xDrive30e trunk, and he concurred with Tom that looks are deceiving. After loading it up with luggage and measuirng the trunk/back area, he said it doesn't lose a whole lot of usable space compared to the non-hybrid X3. @@DrivenCarReviews I don't disagree, but again, in terms of bang for the buck, the performance you're getting out of some of these lower-priced PHEVs is amazing. I know you can do better by shelling out another +$20K, but what you can now get without spending another 40% is objectively impressive.
@JBM425
@JBM425 2 года назад
@@stevengrey4528 To be honest, I used to think that way in absolutes, but after requesting a Toyota Corolla for a rental vehicle but getting a BMW X7 because they were out of that class of car, I am not automatically assuming a cheaper car such as the RAV4 would win a bang-for-the-buck contest. A Toyota Venza or an Acura/Lexus equivalent might because it has more content and quality materials, but one major win for a BMW X3 plug-in is that it can tow over 4,000 pounds. The RAV4 can only do under 2,000 pounds, and strangely, the Venza--which is based on the RAV4--is not rated to tow at all. Still, I would like to see that kind of comparison to illustrate the point. Ultimately, the buyer has to determine the bang-for-the-buck value.

I'm an X3 owner and at some point, I'll be car shopping (it's getting long in the tooth). Can this or other X3's get a spare tire as an option? I had to white-knuckle it all over the place when I took an Asheville vacation -- petrified of getting a slashed sidewall or other puncture miles from nowhere on some nice but gravelly roads. I vowed to never again get an RFT car.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 4 года назад
Run flats are okay in some cases but if you take yours on trails or do moderate off-roading I would want a physical spare. There's no place to put one unless it just takes up space in the trunk.

Sadly, you're right. BMW sure pushes them hard though. I get a sinking feeling every time I pass a construction site or a gravel road.@@DrivenCarReviews

For as long as you can run the car on electricity or gas (which is a very long time). Or better yet, wait at Starbucks.

12 kWh = 21 miles. I'm doing 47 miles easy (in summer) on 16 kWh with my Clarity. There is something not efficient here. A little bit more batteries would make it better. Agree with you on PHEV. they are great. I have not put any gaz in mine since January and use it everyday.

I would say it's also perfect for the solo driver or the couple. Anything larger would be overkill; the X3 gives you just enough elbow room to be comfortable without feeling like you're piloting a battleship when a PT boat would do. On the other hand, unlike smaller SUVs, it also gives you plenty of cargo room for those Costco or Home Depot trips or towing a small camper or toy hauler (4,400 pounds of towing is nothing to sneeze at).

Tom, $64k for a front drive with a revolution 18 miles of electric range! Wow! I know, it’s nice, drive well and it’s quiet. I hope so for that price and BMW catalogue of options. I will leave it to peoples who like to show off in those. Can I suggest to rent it? How long? The length of the warranty!

Tom, I enjoy your channel and I think your reviews are very well done. My "civil" comment is that I wish you would stop begging for subs. I subscribe to numerous channels on different topics, and you are the only one who asks for subs on every video. You even explain why people should sub because of how hard you work and how good the content is. To quote Benjamin Disraeli, "Never complain, never explain." If viewers are impressed, they will subscribe. Let it go--please.

Let’s see it doesn’t have a BMW in-line six cylinder. It doesn’t have a Tesla killler electric motor. It doesn’t have any good range, 18 miles, are you joking? It doesn’t have a shape that separates it from the herd. Why exactly would I buy this over complex BMW that will have service issues soon after purchase? But a Tesla model Y. You are welcome.
