2020 BMW X5 xDrive 45e M Sport Review: Posh Plug-In Hybrid - Inside Lane

This is the new BMW X5 45e plug-in hybrid that replaces the old 40e. A new 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder and BMW's latest generation batteries combine for an output of 389bhp and 442lb torque. 0-62mph takes just 5.6 seconds in a luxury SUV that offers 42 - 54 miles WLTP all-electric range.
This X5 plug-in is capable of running on electric up to speed of 84mph, delivering a tranquil cosseting ride. The spacious cabin seats five and the split-folding tailgate reveals 500-litres of boot space.
The 45e's centre console is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display. It runs the 7th generation of BMW's excellent iDrive system.
The 2020 BMW X5 xDrive 45e costs from just over £63,000.

Here in the states, this car just showed up last month as a 2021 model. The 2020 version I believe was the 40e and had the 4 cyl engine.

Hi. Nice video . I hesitate a lot between 21 inch or 22 inch rims. You have tested the car with 22 inch rims. Can you tell me if this does not detract too much from the general comfort. Can we not feel too much the irregularities of the road going up in the steering wheel ? Thx from France 🇫🇷

Our infrastructure and general lives just are not ready for the mass rollout of electric vehicles. Even in the UK, the vast majority of us can't charge a car overnight due to parking on the street or in estate car parks.

I own one and I'm getting 75mpg on average mostly doing local drives on EV all the time with the odd longer drive. Perfect!

That one sits on 22s so unless he drove on all rim sizes I wouldn’t expect a precise answer to your question. Also, I don’t think you can get below 20inch in M sport package.

On 23 September, BMW decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall. According to the NHTSA report, there are some 4,509 recalled PHEVs in the US, including 2,441 X3 xDrive30e (2020-2021), 1,228 X5 xDrive 45e (2021), and 33 Mini Cooper Countryman All4 SE (2020-2021). BMW is currently working on a solution to the fault. Until a remedy is available, drivers will be instructed to not charge their vehicle, not to drive in manual or sport mode, and to not use the shift paddles.

I’d personally have the Touring, but people like the way SUVs look, their practicality and high driving position.

@@insidelane thx mate. Then zero advantage. Practicability is better on the wagon. Loading is easier for the wagon, entering and exiting the car easier. Dynamic much better, fuel economy better, cargo space is same if not bigger. It weighs 500 kg less, uses less tires and brakes, costs less. Better aerodynamic and better Co2. So all this just to sit higher? Get a booster seat for yourself

@@cimino39 Haha! I agree with most of that, but I'd say getting in and out - or installing a kids seat - is easier in an SUV.

@@insidelane arguable but I understand what people think or what they make them think. I am a publisher myself but possibly older and more tired than you of the non sense. A hybrid suv is to me the epitome of nonsense. And I am sad to see that science is bullied by marketing. Good job mate, keep it up

That’s really useful feedback. Most of our videos are published at the same time, but if we upload the day before in readiness we tend to set as premier. If people don’t like that, that’s something we can easily change.
