After plenty of June rain, crops on Harry's Farm are looking much better than they did just a few weeks ago. In the second part of this video, I explain how UK farming is going to change dramatically over the coming few years and it might been my days of being an arable farmer will soon be over.

Harry should stand for election in David Cameron’s old constituency of Witney. Publishing a set of farm accounts showing revenue and costs by crop and field would help educate people why farmers are asset rich but cash poor.

It would be great if those of us who live in rural areas are represented by intelligent businessmen and professionals who have actually done a real job before they go into politics. I would happily work for someone like Harry, but not the MP for the Tory-held constituency I live in. The Tories don't care about agriculture, as long as they can kid enough people who live in rural areas to vote for them. Some of them are even arguing that agriculture does not contribute enough to the economy and this country should model itself on Singapore, which imports almost all its food. A chilling prospect that thousands of farmers may soon follow miners and steelworkers into oblivion.

Just keep in mind how little one pays for their food at the supermarket, or how cheap beer is. When the subsidies go, food prices will have to go up, costs have to be paid one way or another.

If you know the history of what happened in Russia after the socialists took over you know that the answer is YES. Lenin lowered the price of food because the people in the cities, producing nothing of use, demanded it. The result: Less food for everyone... If we don't support our farmers and they quit, the Chinese will be buying up our farms like they have in Australia. The Aussies have now woken up and smelt the coffee but it's too late now. China own many of their Cattle ranch's, dairy farms, arable farms and abattoirs and they supply China not Australia. That's beside the minerals they are mining and shipping back to China and the University's and schools they have a massive influence in due to cash bribes. I'm English and have been researching this for a few years. Australia didn't see it coming, the farmers were just glad to sell their failing farms. Hopefully with this CCP virus opening everyone's eyes, Britain won't fall into the same trap. A few U.K. companies have sold out to China but not enough to destroy our whole economy unlike Australia.

I agree with your view about the CV19 pandemic...one of the key learnings should be that this country needs to be more self sufficient and good responsible farmers like yourself should be encouraged to grow more food for our own needs. Contracting out to other countries is irresponsible & leaves you desperate for goods when things go wrong and we are not making things for ourselves as we have seen. 👍🏻

I'm sure all of us remember the Horse meat scandal a few years ago when a certain Supermarket chain was found to be buying cheap 'Beef' from abroad which turned out to be Horse meat that was not meant to go into the food chain. We now buy all our meat from our local Butchers. Since the Lockdown we have made the decision to get our bread from the local Bakers and our veg from the Greengrocers. It might cost a bit more but tastes a whole lot better and also helps to keep these smaller shops in business. I didn't realise until fairly recently that the bread in Supermarkets is steamed not baked!!! If we have buy all our food from abroad not only will the quality be suspect we could be held to ransom over the price of it.

In my country we pride ourselves of having possibly the cleanest food in the EU since we use a very low amount of pesticides, and it has shown during the pandemic that local food production is all suddenly very valuable, but are people prepared to pay more for it? The struggle here is much the same as for you.. If people would have to pay the actual prices for growing and processing the yield, there would be an outcry! All the very best to you harry and i hope you can continue your farm after this mess in your country. I follow your channel with interest. As a Dutchman living in the UK and working in the ag industry, I cannot fathom British farmers voting for leaving the EU. Britain can produce a great many food commodities but without some major changes, there will always be produce missing for the simple reason that the climate does not suit a number of commodities. Greenhouses came into being as a means of creating and controlling the climate conditions required to produce items normally associated with warmer regions. Without adopting more of those technologies, the need to import these items will remain. The other side of this coin is to promote the biodynamic diet, where people go back to focussing on eating what is in season, or indeed some kind of combination of both. We do not need tomatoes all year round, for example. This is as much a result of the influences supermarket chains have over manipulating what consumers want as anything else. They promote the lines of produce they can get hold of and get a good margin on, without concern of how that affects the local producers. Supermarket chains are deliberately convenient, but they are only after making money and increasing their market share. They promote the idea of providing a sales point for local producers and are providing that for some product, but they could do much much more...
@grayfool

@@alexveldhuis6004 I agree. I don't see the benefit in buying in what we can produce for ourseleves. It becomes a politacl weapon rather than a market driven or pratical soloution to the countires requiements. I subscribed to the NFU petition a few days ago and your video has reinfinforced the importance of making that decision. I sincerely hope its successful but I have my doubts.

As a Canadian living in a farming community (Westlock Alberta) I really like Harry's updates on his farm, really cool stuff. Here it's not uncommon for a farmer to have a crop size over a 1000 acres. We have different names for the same crop too, for instance at the beginning of this video he was commenting in his crop of Linseed, that we would call Flax. It's weird that when wheat here comes up after heavy rains we see an abundance of thistle too, although there are plenty of herbicides to deal with it if it gets too bad they are getting resistant to many applications, here we see a lot of mixing with a base generally of 2,4-D and another like Tordon as an example. I've never heard of a government mandate that tells farmers they need to grow 3 crops for greening purposes, seems like kind of daft idea to me. As a kid when I used to work for my neighbor on his place he's have 160 acres put to hay (which I had to mow, windrow, square bale, stook and then pick up and put the bales under tarps or in a pole shed unless he had a summer with more than two cuts, then he sold his extra.) A field of maybe 40-80 acres for flax (I always liked the blue flowers) or mustard etc. as a crop, than maybe another 80-160 acres on summer fallow (where you don't grow anything and let the earth rest) and then his big crops of wheat, oats and rye he used to farm 6 sections of land (a smaller family farm). Anyway, thanks for the update and a chance to look through different eyes at farming, I hope your crops do well and you have a decent harvest, at least enough to pull a tidy profit from!! Cheers from Canada, - Dave

Loving this series of informative videos. Getting the perspective of farmers from what seems a well-informed source without an obvious agenda is so useful in helping cut through the political goings on that grab the headlines. It’s also entertaining, perhaps not in a Clarkson style but with a reassuring, authoritative and casual approach.

Amazing hearing how ridiculously tight the margins are for farmers, really appreciate you going into the details and politics. Fascinating. Hopefully the UK public become more aware after this pandemic

QUESTION PLEASE : What pricing power do farmers have ? Can tariffs be placed on imports ? Is it reasonable to expect the final customer to directly pick up the tab for the missing subsidies by 2027 ? Why is farming not a bigger issue at election times nationally ? What is the average size of arable farms in the UK ? To a layman, it appears to be a lot of effort and worry to farm 450 acres for a gross margin of GBP15,000. I imagine with a smaller holding, the probability of profit is even lower. As older farmers die off, are younger people coming into farming, or are farms consolidating ? Do farmers have to be able to support themselves independently from the farm for practical purposes ? What will happen to the price per acre for arable land between now and 2027 ? These videos are really great to help us city dwellers understand what's happening to the economies of the areas that we drive through at weekends for a break from the city.

Your explanation of the figures is the best bit for me. I started watching this with NO IDEA at all how much this all makes but can see the risks of that business from the outset. Really is breadline stuff and not feasible if you don’t own the land

Nowt to do with farming, but I really, really love to see a man who's MAN enough to ride a QUIET MOTORBIKE. No screaming two-stroke angst or tiresome adolescent throttle twiddling to compensate for... er, well, you know... certain male confidence 'issues'. I'm not even a biker [I'm a very minor ex amateur club-level rally driver] but I do know that a grown-up motorbike burbles quietly to itself because it's confident that it can get the job done and has absolutely nothing to prove. That skylark (ascending) didn't stir till Harry was almost on top of it. Nice!

Totally agree Harry that food produced as locally as possible makes the most sense, from both a food security perspective and environmentally. I see where some of our supermarket veg cones from (Kenya for example) and I often think ‘How is this environmentally friendly when it’s had to be transported thousands of miles with the corresponding emissions?’ I appreciate it may help the economies of some of these poorer nations and obviously if it’s something that can’t be grown here, fair enough, but when it’s just green beans or sugarsnap peas, it seems crazy. A really interesting update. Thanks for the insight into the politics of farming today. Glad to see your wheat has recovered. As soon as it started raining I thought Harry will be happy!

Harry, I have to say I really enjoy your videos. Extremely informative - I’ve learned so much from your content from the basics of how to build a dry stone wall to this current episode regarding the financial aspect of a 450 acre farm. One thing that always confuses me is the price of land when it is not possible to make above the living wage. And that’s including the CAP payment. Here in Ireland people pay above and beyond what land is worth. I suspect in some cases it’s a post colonial mindset that drives us to be land hungry. In other cases it makes sense from a tax perspective. But I don’t know of any other business where someone can pay extortionate money and be happy that in the knowledge that they’ll not make anything worthwhile talking about back in their investment. All this and I still want land to call my own!

The subsidies that are propping up farming came into place to bring up production. We did that now. It did not improve farmers' bottom line. Since World War 2 most farms have disappeared and been combined into larger and larger, more intensive farms. This has had a negative impact on rural lives and livelihoods and does great damage to the natural environment. No stewardship schemes will change that. We need many smaller diverse farms with high biodiversity and mixed production, which can resist a changing climate and improve soil health. The world is slowly coming around. That's the reason why farming policy seems to be all about the environment now. Big changes are needed, and as usual they will come too slowly until something lights a fire under our asses. Farmers should not have to compete on the world stage, or even with for example EU countries with much lower costs of production. Each country should be largely self sufficient in the crops and foods that it can be.
@Theorimlig
@Theorimlig 3 года назад
@Matthew Quinn For sure, subsidies and similar can be used to preserve and even increase the number of small farms. It depends on what they reward. If you get paid based on having high production or farming a lot of hectares big farms will be the ones that benefit from the system, and that's the way it is now.
@Theorimlig
@Theorimlig 3 года назад
@Matthew Quinn Yeah, but farmers should do more than just own land to be compensated financially IMO.

Farming policy is about the "environment" (seems to be more of a trojan horse than anything) because they're slowly trying to strangle small sole traders out of business.

Well said Harry. Yes if it can be produced by UK farms, we should buy it. We should all look for British Produce when we shop. Locally produced, less mucking about in trucks for weeks, lower carbon footprint. All this should be taught at school so the next generation have more of a insight into farming and how food gets on their plates.
