2020 Hornby Centenary Rocket with lights and DCC SOUND! - quick look

Hi all!
Today as promised, im taking a look at a Hornby Centenary Rocket!
This Rocket has Zimo DCC sound, with a Youchoos file and a working firebox light!
Work was carried out by a good friend of mine - Alan, of ‘Model Railway Workshop’.

Alan does the sound fits that others dont want to, such as wickham trolleys ect with lighting options available!

Really pleased to see a positive review of Hornby's magnificent Stephenson Rocket. The modifications you have demonstrated here, should put to bed any concerns people may have about turning it into a DCC model. Well done!. Modellers who have pre-ordered the Hornby 3rd class carriage, may also consider converting one to have a motorised chassis, further aiding the running properties of this model.

Bewsey Bill thankyou mate, i must add that i am in no way affilliated with Hornby - so these are my genuine unbiased thoughts. Im interested to see how well it will cope with the 3rd class carriage, i reckon people will potentially need to fill the chimney with lead unless track is perfectly level. Even so, me and my friends like owning these models and modifying them to increase the enjoyment of using them, rather than letting them sit on a shelf (not that thats a bad thing!) So glad others get enjoyment from the vids. Thanks!

I quite like the wheel slip on starting, very prototypical. The sound and fire box are very good.

Great to see your Rocket in action, and it does sound great. I saw Youchoos have the installation guide on their website, which from what I can gather was from your model. Whether I do it is another matter. You may have seen my review on Piccadilly Sidings but I removed the coal load and made a new one from a 5g wheel weight. Yes coal is a tad higher but personal my I think it’s a compromise worth having. The running performance has been stunning since. Prior to the weight fitting it stopped 6 times on my 11’ layout

Yeah mate the Youchoos one was based on this, it was the first to be done, shortly followed by someone on RMweb (but without firebox) Just brings it to life really! Fair play! Yeah weight is the main issue i have with it, will be interested to see how it copes with hornbys new additional coach!

Cheers mate. Yeah its a little bit of a problem! But i guess id rather have an accurate model and have to alter my bridges ect than have it look odd!

I believe the short couplings are for between the coaches for display purposes (buffers touch/coaches closers together) and longer are for running on layouts to give some allowance for curves.

With my Rocket I have three small coupling hooks and 3 long coupling hooks.

Great sound on Rocket, I might have similar height issues on my layout as have two low tunnels.

What are you doing to me? I've just forked out a lot of cash for the model plus pre-order of 2 3rd class coaches and now I need to get the sound and firebox upgrade! 🤣 Looks nice and yep, now I've gotta do it too. I'll have to fit myself though as I'm in Australia. Cheers! 👍

Haha! Sorry mate :-p Its well worth the upgrade though! Makes it much more fun to use. If you havent yet had the model shipped out, could always have it sent straight to Alan and then on to yourself once done perhaps!

To be honest I thought the two short couplings went between the coaches and long one between the coach and the tender but only if you have realistic curves. Otherwise it's long coupling throughout.

The coaches on this are called ‘Times’, ‘Experience’ & ‘Despatch’

Is that on both sides? I can’t remember what mine says. But I have the limited edition rocket as well.

On the Triang limited edition, it is as Eric states. On the ordinary version, the coaches are called Globe, Renown and Wellington. It is a lovely looking model!

Thanks for a great video of this lovely collector's piece. Is the sound file from YouChoos recorded from one of the live replicas? New version of "Steam on the Underground" - will Rocket need a trip cock? Lol.
