2020 Hyundai Elantra Review // New Transmission, New Look

The Hyundai Elantra compact sedan has been updated for 2020 with a look that reminds us of an older Ford Focus. The 2020 Hyundai Elantra 5-passenger sedan has been updated with new headlamps, available LED headlamps, bumper, fog-lights and rear bumper and tail lamps. The Hyundai Elantra is a cousin car to the Kia Forte sedan. Powering the 2020 Hyundai Elantra is an Atkinson Cycle 2,0L 4-cylinder with 148hp. The big mechanical change for 2020 includes what Hyundai calls an iCVT, or intelligent continuously variable transmission. This new transmission is like other CVT's but differs from allotters in this class because it uses a chain system instead of a belt for more responsive starts and the ability to mimic conventional gear changes. The upside to adding a CVT is improved fuel economy. In Canada, the Hyundai Elantra sedan is sold with a base 6-speed manual transmission but all other trims get the new CVT. On the base model CVT the buyer needs to spend $1500 more to get the advanced forward collision safety system. This feature is included on the top trims as standard equipment. The interior of the Hyundai Elantra commuter car is a comfortable cabin with standard heated front seats, available heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, along with optional leather seats. The base display audio is a 5-inch unit with Bluetooth connectivity. The other display audio systems are the 7-inch or 8-inch units with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the top unit even has onboard navigation. The Elantra is also available with a wireless charging pad. The Elantra sedan is good basic transportation but buyers who prefer a more engaging drive can opt for the Elantra GT or GT N-Line for an available turbocharged engine and independent rear suspension. As it stands, this is a comfortable and efficient everyday car.

peter lee Elantra has no feeling in the steering, tons of body roll, cheap cabin materials (even compared to a 2012 Focus - soft touch and textured), less HP and torque, and torsion beam rear suspension (compared to independent on the Focus). Interior room, price, and fuel economy are basically the same. Only thing objectively better is Hyundai's warranty, so how is it far superior?

This car is is piece of sh#t. I bought one and at 4000 miles I got a knock in the engine. took it to hyudai and it was low on oil. so they put me on an oil consumption test. it burned a half a quart of oil every thousand miles. engine knocks and they refuse to replace it. I even contacted hyundai motors directly and they said this was within their parameters. I just wasted $21,000 and have a car with a engine knock, burns oil and only has 12,000 miles on it now. so screw hyundai. stay far away. buy a honda or toyota. I'll never buy another hyundai.

I much prefer an independent rear suspension, but if you give that up you can save a lot of money with the Elantra. Here in the USA you can easily purchase a base Elantra SE with IVT for between $16,000 and $17,000 US after dealer discounts, while a base Toyota Corolla will give you lower gas mileage and cost you at least $18,500 after dealer discounts. So, it's a matter of how much money you have to spend. I think the 2020 Elantra front end is ugly, but it does seem to look better in blue, silver, or fluid metal. How much ugly can you stomach to save money? They are reliable; probably more reliable than the Civic, so the cost per mile is very low over the vehicle's lifetime.

Did the Ford designer moved to Hyundai recently? Both new Sonata and Elantra styling are disappointing to most buyer. Plus ICVT. 2019 version is a much better buy than 2020. Good looking, handling and resale value - Honda civic Reliable point A to point B -Toyota Corolla Premium interior and handling but don't want to pay BMW premium price and no CVT - Mazda 3 Want to save the earth, good fuel economy with long warranty - Hyundai Ioniq Best bang for the buck new car with long warranty - Hyundai Elantra Base Manual.( US unavailable ) I will buy the new 2020 Elantra only if I want a bargin car with manual transmission. The base manual in Canada has low price and more standard features than others. Also no CVT to worry about.

Actually the Hyundai Elantra used to have independent rear suspension in all the trim lines. I know that my 3rd Gen Elantra which I bought in 2003 had independent rear suspension. I remember when I purchased that Elantra at that time I verified that all the 3rd Gen trim lines had the same better suspension. I also remember that the 4th Gen Elantra which was released in 2006 also had this better independent rear suspension in all trim lines as well. When Hyundai released the 5th Gen Elantra back (I believe it was back in 2011) that's when they started using the torsion beam suspension in most of the trim lines. I am not sure when the 5th Gen Sport trim line was released, but I know that the standard for several years here in the USA is that the Sport model does have independent rear suspension. BTW the Corolla also used to have a torsion beam suspension in most of their models as well. I am glad to see that Toyota made the change to go back to the better choice. I just wish Hyundai would do the same for their 4 door Elantra.

With regards to the front and rear clips on the Elantra AD (2017 to present), as an owner of a 2015 Elantra Limited (the Elantra MD, built from 2011 to 2016) I think I understand how they got to the current design. I love the looks of my Elantra MD and in 2017 when they launched the Elantra AD it was disappointing to see them 'Audi-fy' the Elantra by toning down the aggressive styling cues. I found it a bit too boring, and I think after it was launched they decided they'd gone too far in toning down the styling and the Elantra wasn't distinguishing itself from its competition so they went to work on a refresh that would bring some of the Elantra MD design back to the Elantra AD. Since there's only so much you can do with a front and rear clip it basically came down to hardening the lines for a more triangular design. I think the main issue is that they wanted to keep the big grille design (a design cue I don't particularly like) while making the headlights more aggressive so the lights ended up poking into the grille. I will say that in the dark its running lights make it a very distinctive vehicle; on my way home from work there's a 2019 Elantra owner who drives to work and I notice him every time. I'll also mention that in the future I can see Hyundai taking the front end design of the 2020 Sonata and using its styling cues (wide but lower grille, low swooping hood, distinctive running lights) on the next Elantra redesign.

Having just returned from the Caribbean (Cancun), its amazing that 80% of all there cars (& vans/trucks) are all Manuals. I still can’t figure out why Americans can’t/don’t embrace them. Thanks for another very well thought out video. Merry Christmas to all your Family, friends and fans.

Americans... and Canadians. Though manuals are somewhat less rare in my province (Quebec).

Americans are too lazy to shift gears. Living in the US I must admit that we must be the laziest society on earth. Under the guise of SAFETY, all these new features just enhance our unwillingness to pay attention to our driving and allow us to slack off and relax.

It's not about laziness. It's because they are rare these days and not as efficient as cvt, 9 speeds 8 speeds etc. The Manufacturers must meet cafe standards. Lastly to be honest, who the heck wants to change gears all day in the city? Manual would be horrible with Adaptive cruise control and safety features as one mentioned. In Carribean most Japanese or Korean shipped vehicles come with manual because quite frankly their emission standards are quite different than here.

@@curemeister7443 The reason is the cell phone. You should be thankful they have all these safety features. Pray that when you cross the road and car approaches you that it has pedestrian braking. So what about the cars that don't have the features and they are distracted by their phone? Blame the manufacturers or Government if you still believe its lazy Americans. I guess thank God Iam Canadian.. 😂 😂

I rented this car for a day, and I'm glad I did. Didn't like anything about it. Too uncomfortable. Doing up the belt buckle is a pain in the ass.
