Over Super Bowl weekend, my girlfriend and I went on a 1,200+ mile road trip from Austin to El Paso, Texas and back in the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. What kind of fuel economy did we get with the Wrangler’s new EcoDiesel V6? Watch to find out!

Thanks for watching and the kind feedback! It’s been a while since I drove the Gladiator. All of my travels in it were on-road, but nothing nearly as long as this Wrangler road trip. It was very similar in road feel, ride quality, etc. The two biggest differences were the Gladiator’s length made parking a little trickier and it got WAY more attention from other drivers and people in parking lots than any Wrangler I’ve ever driven.

You don’t get an eco diesel for economy but for the torque for off roading. Diesel fuel usually costs more than gas and the engine is approx. a $4,500 US option so you could buy a lot of gas and could take years to start seeing the benefit of economy. Having said that, I would get the diesel because I off road a lot and would handle larger tires better.

I agree... just be prepared for the maintenance. Oil change alone is $250, new bosch fuel injectors $3,000, new diesel particulate filter $1,200, etc.

You should start seeing better gas mileage as the miles go up. Diesel engines take longer to break in than a gas one. After about 8000-10,000 miles it should go up.

Will be paying off my '16 Ram Ecodiesel this month. I will keep it. But I am seriously considering a Ecodiesel Wrangler. I have a Jeep ZJ that is a project vehicle. I have the ZJ with the intent of installing a Cummins R2.8 crate engine. Along with the 8-speed ZF transmission. If I choose a Ecodiesel Wrangler. It will evolve to have a 3 link suspension and about 4" lift with 4.56 ratio with 35" tires. Or 4.88 ratio with 37's. For towing, my wife has a Cummins powered '18 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd. That beast can carry a camper AND tow any Jeep behind it. Or even a bumper pull Toy Hauler with the Jeep inside.

@@DannyRc The truck has 158,000 miles. I have used Host Shots Secret fuel additives. And also the Stiction Eliminator in the oil every 3rd oil change (30k miles). If the fuel economy drops, check the MAP sensor for being clogged. The truck is used mostly on Interstate highways. I usually cruise 62-70 mph. Get 33mpg @ 70 mph, but as high as 52mpg @ 50mph. The truck is soooo nice to drive over the high mountain passes. And has just the right power in the snow. My wife has a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L 3.42 ratio. It was bought to pull our travel trailer. The VGT engine brake is awesome, and gives plenty of confidence on roads like Tioga Pass (CA-120). But the Cummins engine is such a beast. That it can be tricky on icy roads or offroad. If Ram put the Ecodiesel in the Powerwagon. I would buy one in a heartbeat!!!

@@DannyRc The engine is mostly stock. The only changes are the Bank's silencer delete, and a Flowmaster 50 series Big Block muffler. It has all the software updates. And passes the California smog inspections.

Emjoyed the steering comments. Test drove Rubi...it wondered. Rented a Sahara...much better. Live able. It had the 2.0L T 25 mpg on the hwy at around 70 or so. 22 mpg around town. Good review. 👍😎 I used to drive from Dallas to EP. 600 miles. All day. lol. BTW I didnt know you could drive (steer) a Wrangler 85 mph. lol😂😂😂 Impressed.

There Will Be Cars Ahhh The Rebel. I rode in the Classic Rebel. I found it habit forming. So isolated, insulated, dampened for a truck of that size. And I have considered it. Hummmm. Considering... - Wranglers...I go back to a CJ5 Golden Eagle witha a 304 and a 3 spd stick. Some YJ and X J experience. Still digesting your Sahara Driving video. We rented a Sahara in Denver followed. Rubi around trails out side of Montezuma Co. Above the tree line most of the day. Everything on the trails lifted with big tires....the stock Sahara did it all. (blue level trails) I LIVED I. EP for 2 years and loved it. The world was different then.👍😎🇺🇸

the rubicon has, essentially, off-road tires off the lot. the sahara has all-terrain tires which are much better for the road. if you want a daily jeep, don't get the rubicon, get the sahara.

You bet! Thanks for watching. The JL rides smoother than the JK, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s still a body-on-frame 4X4. The Wrangler Unlimited Sahara EcoDiesel I reviewed in the video had an as-tested price of $56,750.

It steers different because of the tire difference from a rubicon (off road tires) and a Sahara (in road tires). How is this guy a reviewer of he doesn’t know this?
@zxej6879
@zxej6879 4 года назад
Not true! The tires effect on steering is influenced by the internal structure and aspect ratio of the tire. Tread design may change the rubber quantity touching the road. Because of the groove void volume. A General Grabber ATX will give better handling than the cheap stock Goodyear Wrangler found on many new trucks and SUV's.

Mpg sounds too low. My stock jlu sport w/ an auto 3.6 , on a 800 mile family trip through the smoky mountains, did a max 22-25mpg at 65-70. Mind you I do have 31.5 tires on Steelies. In a real world comparison your diesel should do an easy 25-30+. You shouldn’t come close to 20mpg period. Get the dealer check it ,maybe it’s a break end period issue. Your numbers, plus the extra fuel cost per gallon, wouldn’t convince me to upgrade for the diesel, unless you really need the extra torque. Jl Diesel is heavier, doesn’t tow or carry more, and is more complex. Its all about the torque and if Jeep did it right, diesel longevity.
@ThereWillBeCars
@ThereWillBeCars 4 года назад
This was just a media test vehicle that Jeep let me evaluate for a week. If I had been doing 65-70 mph for most of my trip to and from El Paso, I’m sure I would’ve hit 25 mpg or higher, but I was going 85 mph for several hours in a row in both directions. Definitely brought my numbers down, but it sure got us where we needed to go a hell of a lot faster.

I drove a JL rubicon diesel from San Diego to El Paso and back. At 70 mph for most of it and got 28.6 mpg according to the dash and 29.1 hand calculated. Regardless, you don’t buy this engine because you’re a broke ass trying to save $30/month at the pump. You buy it because you want gobs of torque. I’m waiting for the diesel gladiator to be released. It’s going up on 38” tires literally the day it leaves the dealership. Know what my mpg will be? IDGAF.3 but I’ll be embarrassing V6 & turbo 4 jeeps on and off road

That’s crazy, first you’re speeding and then hard acceleration. No vehicle will get the mileage rating that the manufacturer claims. I have a new high altitude ecodiesiel with over4k miles and at 70 I get 28 miles to the gallon and if I don’t drive hard in the cit I get 22 miles to the gallon. Also 90+ MPH is not real world driving. Real world would be 70 to 75 MPH.

The idea for the video was good but I cannot believe you did not calculate the mileage by hand. I have rarely had any of my cars be that accurate calculating the mpg. I hope the Jeep you had was not representative of the type. The number really was disappointing. A member of our local club is doing much better than that with the 4 cylinder turbo. By the time you pay more for the fuel and DEF, I am not sure you would break even with that particular Jeep. The torque will be great if you need it.
