As an OTR truck driver for many years since 2008 and the beginning of the DPF era I am very familiar with these systems. Many times to reduce the problems associated with soot accumulation the manufacturer will program the ECM to regen at set mileage intervals so that the DPF remains as clean as possible. They do this so if the motor fails to regen when necessary it will do it anyway just in case. I think you are observing this now. If you are interested I would like to explain how using a fuel borne catalyst may greatly reduce your regen frequency and duration.

I was in Lubbock TX last week and they happened to have 1 on the lot and I got it. Drove back to Houston and averaged 29 mpg. This is an amazing truck. In my opinion this is not a truck for towing. This is a truck for people who drive tons of miles and want a full size truck and don’t want to get 15mpg. Mine is a crew cab short bed z71 LT.

This is REALLY good mpg for a full size truck. My BMW diesel car (335d) has the same size 3.0L inline 6cyl with twin turbos and gets about 36mpg at 80mph cruising. The torque and power is amazing, with just tuning and intake/exhaust putting down 365whp/595tq.

Jeff, I just finished a long road trip to Harrisburg, PA then to Austin, TX and back to Michigan, overall it was more than 4,000 miles towing my 7x16x7.5 enclosed trailer. Doing the speed limit on all the highways I averages 13.8 mpg. Gross combined weight was 14,000lbs, not max but pretty close, 15k is the limit set by GM. Funny part was with the trailer full or empty the mileage didn't change. Vehicle speed and wind makes the most different in overall economy. I'm back into my towing season again so I have been trying several different things, I'll have a video ready in the not too distant future :)

After seeing this it turned out to be almost exactly the same as my 2021 Chev 3 liter turbo 4x4 after a 154 mile run, but in Canada giving me 37.12 miles per Canadian (Imperial) gallon which is about 1.2 times bigger than a US gallon. Also set at 120 kph (75 mph) and staying in the center lane of 3 lanes and land elevation conditions were also pretty close to the same. From my perspective if this engine holds up, it will be a classic as the low to mid-range torque and fuel milage is phenomenal.

AuctionAdOnline My 19 Super Duty diesel is the same. 17-18 mpg highway unloaded and once I put 8000 lbs or so trailer, it’s 13 mpg. But I consider that fine because the two together weigh 16,000 lbs. So I own an EFI Live unit, mostly to understand how the engine is really working. They don't have support for the 3.0 Duramax yet but I'm pretty sure if it is a popular choice they will add it in the future. I don't plan on deleting it because I want to see if you follow the manufacturers recommendations, maybe changing the oil a little early based on the analysis, will the system work for a long time. My Cruze Diesel has almost 93,000 miles on it and the DEF heater went out once and one NOx sensor died, both are covered under and extended warranty so no cost out of pocket. Sorry to ramble on... I will be doing a cold start for sure in January or February :). More videos are on the way including the towing mpg loop.

Hi Chad, New comer to your videos. Have you towed any with your Silverado/3L Duramax? I’m curious about a couple things, how often it regen’s for mixed driving, and how it handles a modest-medium sized TT (5-6K) in terms of fuel economy, cooling system and oil temps, and regen frequency. I’ve noted that some of the small diesels run VERY HOT when towing anything with a significant ‘brick effect’ like a travel trailer. I may be looking for a nice eco / light towing truck and am trying to get a good sense of which manufacturer has done their homework for cooling and gearing best so my truck won’t be overtaxed or running super hot while towing. Many thanks for info on your experiences!!

The price of the belt is $13.70 and you need to move the transmission/transfer case back and remove an access cover to get in and change it. How often is your DPF regen cycle? My 3.0l Duramax has 900 miles and is regenning every 150 miles or so. It seems very frequent to me. My 2016 LML would regen every 600 to 700 miles.

My truck is also doing a Regen every 150-250 miles under light load. Just took it to the dealership and had a ECM and Reactant Module updated. On January 3rd 2020 a new software was released, I'm hoping it will help some. Towing I have went over 600 miles but that's because it is passively doing the Regen all the time. The service department said that was normal with this engine but I wanted it documented anyway. Thanks for the commenting and watching. I'm going to post a video with my service info this weekend.

What's the point of the better mpg when the price of diesel is so high compared to gasoline? I'd stick with the 5.3l or 6.2l if you need more towing capacity.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 4 года назад
Part of the reason is the driving experience, I love to drive an engine that has lots of torque and runs at lower RPMs. It's what I like and I have had several other gasoline towing vehicles and I hate having to listen to a V8 sing at 4,000 rpms.

Great video, i would also like to see how higher speeds affect the mpg like PhillLsx GA mentioned. i have 87 mile commute to work one way 90% interstate and average 77 - 80 mph. I have seen in the past that vehicles are tuned to meet highest mpg at posted speeds and tend to fall off significantly at even several miles per hour higher. I currently have been trying to get one of these trucks for a day to verify but dealership doesn’t want to put 180 miles on truck that i may not purchase.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 5 лет назад
Andrew, there are several things to consider when it comes to mpg. First it the difference in wind resistance between 80mph and 70mph is a squared function so 80*80=6400 and 70*70=4900 so if the truck does not get more aerodynamic at higher speeds, and I don't know if these do, you are going to get 31*4900/6400=23.7mpg. This math holds true regardless of the engine that you pick you loose 25% running faster. The second thing to consider is the advantage that diesel engines offer. Most engine use the least fuel per horsepower at peak torque so at 70mph it is turning 1,575rpm so at 80mph it will be turning 1,800rpm in 10th grade. The 3.0 Duramax has peak torque available from 1,500-3,000rpm so it will be in an efficient operating range at either speed, this shouldn't negatively affect the mpg you will get. The Silverado does have larger air curtains than the GMC so there is a chance at higher speed it could be more aerodynamic???? I hope this helps a little and thanks for the question.
@drew7767

Chad Ivan thank you for pointing out the math on this. I am still interested in the objective test results and interstate highway is my preference. Always interesting to me to prove out the math.

I'm looking to buy a Chevy/GMC in November. I tow rarely and most of my driving is 55+ mph. I would like your thoughts about 3.0 vs the 5.3. Knowing what you know now, would you stay with the diesel or go with the 5.3. I'm looking at the diesel for the mpg and durability over the 5.3. Any idea of what your cost of ownership has been yet? Your video was nice for me as I'm in the same area.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 4 года назад
Zorb, You question is a little hard to answer for me since I'm a little biased toward the 3.0 Duramax. Both the 3.0 and the 5.3 are technically new engines, the 3.0 started production in 2019 and the 5.3 DFM motor started in 2018. The 5.3 AFM motor has been being built for a lot of years and have had some oil burning issues and the ones that I have driven the switching between V4 and V8 mode was annoying both from a sound and smoothness perspective I would never own the 5.3 AFM motor. I have driven only 1 DFM motor and the transition between 8 cylinder and less, it can do 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, or 2 cylinder mode was almost undetectable so that was a plus. The 3.0 is so smooth and always stays in 6 cylinder mode and and inline 6 cylinder is one of the smoothest motor configurations possible. It does have a valve in the exhaust that will make it have a little bit of a drone under very light throttle conditions. Torque and overall drive-ability goes to the 3.0. The transmission on the 3.0 is the 10 speed, it is one of GMs best transmissions, the 5.3 can have either the 8 speed or the 10 speed depending on what model you get. Since you will be driving the truck at 55+ most of the time the next thing to consider is how long you drive it, more than 5 miles or less than 5 miles, a general cutoff for making sure the diesel particulate filter gets cleaned routinely. Since you have some time left before you make a purchase, please stay tuned to my channel and I'll be posting some more videos for new diesel owners including some cost of ownership info. Thanks for the question I hope this helps a little bit for now.

@@CJIEngineering Thanks Chad. Helpful information. My current daily commute is 32 miles each way. The last two trucks I've owned I've paid off early dumped the first (F150) at 143k miles, and the second (sierra SLE) looks like it will also be around 143k miles. I was going to keep this one until the wheels feel off, but after the dealership mechanic dropped chunks of the fiberglass filled plastic intake manifold gasket into both cylinder heads. The chunks melted and stuck to the exhaust valves. In short, I do not trust they removed all the fiberglass fibers from all the affected cylinders. Fiberglass is extremely abrasive. A $1000 repair (high pressure fuel pump) nearly cost me $5000. Fortunately my line of work and being a former mechanic allowed me to prove they were at fault. This will be my 2nd diesel, my first was a 2000 RAM 6.0 Cummings. Thanks again for the info. Looking forward to seeing what other videos you produce.

I’ve been highly interested in these diesels including the 2.8 Duramax it’s the daily driving aspect that worries me. The emissions system works well during long distance, as with any modern diesel. I want one of these because I do tow just not everyday I don’t know if the emissions system will give my problems for short drives I don’t have enough distance for between my job and too much idling for warm up isn’t good either.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 5 лет назад
I have not had any real issues with either engine's emissions system. I did have the DEF freeze in the lines one time but after putting the truck in a warm garage for a night. My Equinox gets driving about 10 mile one way to work and it has been doing very well, no emissions system issues to date and it has just over 27k miles on it and we have had it for 2 years. One advantage diesel has over gasoline engines is that they don't really generate any water during combustion so a complete warm up is not to critical. I hope this helps a little bit..

@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 4 года назад
I have had an older 6.0l GM truck in the past and there is no comparison for the Torque that you have available. The key is going to be how many lbs you tow and if the frame on the 1500 is going to be strong enough. I routinely pull 5000 to 8000lbs and don't have any issues. I'm possibly going to put higher load rated tires on the truck just for the stiffer side walls. If you have never owned a modern diesel with all the emissions systems on it, watch my next view on the DEF system. No real issues but as a preview I'm having to fill up the DEF tank every ~1,500 miles while towing. No real issue for me but I have a 3,500 mile trip coming up soon and it will be interesting to see how that goes :) Thanks for the question and for watching.

@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 3 года назад
@@doubles259 Well I just talked to a Top Tier Diesel representative and this is a awesome subject for a video I believe. The long and the short of it is that there are a super low number of stations that qualify for Top Tier Diesel status. The rep told me that some Cosco location have all of the requirements in place and a few stations belonging to the Federated Coop in Canada qualify. The additive package was developed in conjunction with GM, Detroit Diesel, Navistar, VW and Ford. AC Delco does sell an additive package that you can put in your fuel and I'm looking into that. On of the other big things that has prevented acceptance of this standard is that the pumps must have a level of filtration and also water detectors to make sure you are not contaminating you truck during the fill up. The OEMs do have fuel that meets the qualifications during testing but in the real world we are kind of on our own :(. As for your initial question, I don't use an additive package at this time but the Meijer Diesel is considered Premium Fuel and does have extra additives in it, not Top Tier Qualified at this time but it could be partially due to the pump related items?? Good quality fuel is a must with any Diesel engine so if you have a vendor near you that you trust stick with them to eliminate one variable in your ownership experience. While traveling I would highly recommend that you use a truck stop for fueling, the high flow filler does work but you need to keep the flow rate down to about 0.75gal/sec so it does not back up in the filler neck. (Another video topic to come) If they have normal fillers up front those are typically good to, Flying J, Loves, Pilot and TA are all ones that I use during cross country jaunts. Congratulations on the new truck and keep me posted. I'm working on videos today :)

Whats a regen ? I don’t understand.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 4 года назад
So a Regen is the function that is performed to clean out the particulate filter. This filter is in the exaust stream to keep the black smoke from getting out into the atmosphere. When that filter gets full the temperature is increased to 1,150 F and the soot is burned into ash. If you have ever seen a self cleaning oven, this is the same type of function. I hope that helps.

So what I have noticed is that if the Regen has cleaned down to 30% it will end and not restart. If you stop with >30% the next time the truck gets to operating temperature, ~160 F it will restart. @CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 4 года назад
Tyke, no problem. I'm hoping to get a diesel 101 series published to help answer these questions for everyone since the motor is now just about $1,000 over the 5.3 gas. So a Regen is when the diesel participate filter in the exhaust gets cleaned using a little bit of extra fuel to heat the ceramic filter up to around 1,200 F. The process is very similar to a self cleaning oven. There are some tell tale signs that it is happening, higher idle when you are stopped, fans possibly running and a little big of a different engine tone. It take around 10mim and happens at a minimum of every 640miles if you are towing, city driving it will be much lower, possibly every 120 miles. There are no lights that come on during normal operation and you can interrupt the cycle. With that said if the system can not keep its self cleaned you will get a message that will tell you you need to keep driving till a cycle gets finished, a short drive on the highway/rural road should keep it operating properly. Other things to think about include proper maintenance, DexosD oil, fuel filter replacements, and adding DEF to the truck. These will be detailed in a future video. Thanks for the question and for watching.

This engine has a pretty complex cooling/warming solution, something similar to what was used on the Volt. It has a separate cooling circuit for the head, block, engine oil, transmission oil, heater core and then radiator. In the interest of fuel economy it will only circulate coolant through the head since it is the first thing to warm up, take that heat and warm the cabin if necessary then add some heat to the engine oil. Once the block warms up it will change to pull some heat from that also. The next thing to get heat added to it is the transmission oil. Only once all fluids are up to temperature does the ECU allow some coolant to flow through the radiator. In my book it's really neat technology but could be prone to failure. In the past GM has done a good job of shutting down fuel to an engine that is overheating and I expect this one is similar. The blown engines, I believe are going to be related to the air/water intercooler failing but only time will really tell. I'll keep everyone posted if something does go wrong. Thanks for the comment and Happy Easter.

After I commented on your video I did a quick google search of 3.0 Duramax overheating and I was shocked! With the way your temp gauge was bouncing around I would be terriftwling 6,000 pounds. Glad you haven’t had any issues, however complicated it is believe me it shouldn’t be and that temperature should not be bouncing around or going over 210 and to be fair the big Duramax doesn’t bounce or go over 210.

I would love for GM to come out with a heavy half ton truck that would have higher payload rating, maybe 8600 gvw, floating rear end and a engine driven cooling fan on the 3.0 Duramax. That should give a tow rating of 13k or so. If that came out I would go with a truck like that too. Not holding my breath, just hoping they do something.

Good information. What application are you using to capture that info?

Torque Pro and the Track Recorder add in. I have a video one my channel showing how to add some PIDs that are not part of the standard package. Thanks for the question and for watching
