On that subject, I have noticed there are so many interesting Japanese reviews on the new Supra that I wish were translated to English, or had English subtitles.
@@HoweDoYouDo1999 well of course, the Japanese car community is so much better than the US because the people are more open minded and prefer balance and fun factor vs over powered cars that only go fast in a straight line. The community is more open and all of the negativity like in the states doesnt exist here. Here it's all about expressing yourself through your car and making friends rather than a dick measuring contest of on paper numbers.
Shelby GT350R 0-60 @ 3.9 Shelby GT350 Base 0-60 @ 4.3 Cayman S 0-60 @ 4.3 Camaro ZL1 0-60 @ 3.5 2020 Supra 0-60 @ 3.8 The supra is 200hp/250hp less than most of them I imagine if supra tuned as little as 500hp will smoke anything
But you would want to cut for down force. Yeah yeah I understand some people don't want to cut for various reasons. But for those that do will get better performance if they know what they are doing of course. Seriously can't wait to see Supra's racing again been like 2 decades but feels like 5 but then again probably because we are used to thing happening fast around us that some people forget the Supra and it's name. Sure can't wait for the full Toyota Supra they will learn a lot from this modern inline-6 to create their own I hope they do.
havent been quiet sinse Day one. The camero SS doesnt get braught up in convo becuase it will MAUL the supra. Especially if they both get stage one ecm tunes. If not its a close race. Camero SS has back seats and comes with manual trans, also its MUCH cheaper.
except he mentioned the v6 camero, notice he left the camero SS completely out. the camero SS is still cheaper and can be super charged under factory warranty for still under what the supra costs pushing over 500hp.
@@sariahreigns3666 The SS is more money, more horsepower. I was trying to make it more apples to apples, but the SS has very, very similar acceleration to the Supra for less money.
@@sariahreigns3666 don't quote me but there may some bolt on made for it that doesn't void it but probably not since it's not their engine. Unlike the Camero that engine is their own they know forsho it can take it. but Toyota is probably like, "yeah not risking it".
@@revmatchtv the SS is not more ive said this before atleast not here. We have them for about 37k give or take a few thousand. thats WAY less then a mkv supra. A 1ss will run you just under 42k.
sariah reigns why does it matter though the only place people are going to see this car is behind a screen anyway cause most fanboys are pissed off enough at this car why does it matter to anyone who ain’t buying it 😂
@755hp: Yet it's SLOW for its numbers. The Camero SS makes similar numbers and weigh 300lbs more yet It is FAST FROM 0-60 AND QUARTER MILE TIMES!💯 BMW sucks at performance for the power.
Good on you, the new Supra is a great buy for the performance you get. There will be heaps of aftermarket mods being developed which I believe will turn this Supra into a cult car in the years to come. When the Nissan R35 GTR first came out back in 2009 , it wasn't the prettiest looking car (and still isn't), it only came out in automatic, even though the previous generations R34, R33, R32 all had manual transmissions. Still to this day, the R35 has never been made in a 'stick shift', yet it has still become a favored high performance car for enthusiasts. I believe the A90 Supra will follow this path within the next couple of years. With a stock Supra being able to do 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds, I look forward to seeing on RU-vid how much better this can be improved on with all the mods being developed by aftermarket tuners.
Most Supra haters cant even afford it and brag about how the GTR R35 was a better sports car even though it was like $100K!. I think the new Supra is a great deal so far...
Most of the legite Supra dislike is from actual Supra owners. This is not the MKV we were expected, regardless of the biased reviews that Toyota bought this is still a BMW with a Supra badge. The best review I have seen mentioned this is the BMW that BMW owners have been waiting for. But is it a Supra the Supra owners have been waiting for? Don't think so.... And the mention of the GTR is a faulty comparison since Nissan created that vehicle 100%, from the engine, interior, suspension, etc it was Nissan. You cannot say that about the new Zupra. I would have glsdly paid $70k for a true Toyota sports car.
Pretty sure that the agreement between Toyota and BMW was that the Supra had to have less HP than the Z4. Printed HP is all that would matter and if they came out hotter, oh well. Great move from Toyota to get the power in the 400 hp range
The new 3.0 Premium Supra due to be released soon is only the start, and will be the platform for a more powerful version which will be released in the future (maybe a year or two), which will come with a manual transmission option. I am almost certain this will happen. Supra's chief engineer Tetsuya Tada even alluded to this in his presentation at the launch.
@@v8_sami almost all the Launch Editions have been claimed, despite not having a manual. Once the 3.0 version is here, I think it'll sell better than the MK4 did. Especially since it's cheaper (inflation)
As a diehard Toyota fool, I'm stoked that Toyota is blasting the cob webs off the supra line. I have pinned after a Mark IV since the late 90's, but with the direction of their prices...yeah right! Now fast forward about 5 years or so and the 2020 supra is starting to look like an awesome alternative, fiscally, of course.
just about every performance japanese car in the 90's were lies. Down to the Silvia s13. Yeah if you believe that is under 250hp i got news for you lol.
it’s already better than the MK4 what are you talking about? Never live up?! Lol, it hasn’t even been released and you’re making such an uneducated guess. This car will blow the MK4 out of the water. It already beats it head to head. What makes you think it won’t smoke it once it’s tuned? The Supra MK4 was nothing to talk about before the Fast and the Furious came out buddy! That’s where all these fanboys came out from.
The Supra was faster then the fastest Corvette out at the time and out cornered the NSX too, with a 0-60 in 4.5 in 1993 it was always a car worth talking about, all F&F did is get people to notice a car that was already good..
@@MF-Rell It was tested by Car & Driver/Road & Track to do just that. Was even on the cover page for that reason. Frankly the NSX's forgiving tuning, long wheelbase, & flexible aluminum body should paint a picture why it was more of GT car than even the Supra, the Supra who's suspension was developed by Lotus..
It’s not ‘second generation’. It’s just the B58. There is a different version for the US market (I think) called the B58tu1; however the Supra has the regular B58 which is a truly epic and sophisticated engine. The B58 is underrated from factory. In my M140i, it’s supposed to make 335bhp and 500nm’s stock, yet mine (it’s stock) made 350bhp/550nm!
All the haters for new supra has absolutely NO IDEA about what supra really is. The MK4 supra STOCK is a decent daily driving sports car(which the new supra still is) but never the performance monster from the fast & furious fantasy. Yes the 2JZ is a legendary engine and if you put a lot of effort and money in it it will give you almost whatever you want. But now is 2019. it is time to move on. The new supra still is an amazingly tunable car. Agree or not it will carry every legacy from the MK4. Expecting a stock Supra making 1000HP is like buying a Camaro and expecting it transform into an alien robot. Things will never going to be that way.
And stop calling this a rebadged Z4. This car has a light weight and solid chassis that the Z4 can not even dream about. With or without a hardtop is very major different when consider chassis rigidity.
For anyone who don’t know........ 2020 Supra and 2020 X3 M. Both share same engine. Different drive train, but the X3 M Competition is putting out 510 HP.
Please keep the Pro-Supra videos coming! As a sports car enthusiast & ex-Toyota dealership employee of 11+ years, I'm so absolutely sick of A90-Bashing know-nothing's hating on a car they haven't driven. They sound jealous OF A CAR to me...sounds personal.
Shady Shinichi who doesn’t buy cars for sound if anything it’s a personal problem if that is what people don’t buy these cars for like what the chit for all that power and it sounds like trash why would I buy it it’s just not a good consumer experience 😂
I have immense respect for people/companies/organizations that don't overstate or overrate their product. Just like at the race track I am most worried about people that don't brag about what their car can do or what power it makes. When I ask another racer how much power does your car make the reply that worries me the most is "Enough". LOL
The Japanese always underrate those cars! Just for some giggles could you do a comparison between the EVO 9 and Supra! I know it's two completely different cars but I would like to see how far the cars perfomance came along since 2006!
Supra is benchmarked against the Cayman. It was even suggested that with mods that this is what your going to end up with in performance. The NEW 718 is one of the most devastating cars on track made. No one that knows cars doubts this car as a capable sports car, but fan boys wanted a DRAG CAR ONLY, and thats where the problem lies. Dragtimes uses exotic track based cars for drag strip racing. Most engineers are not concerned with this one measurement of a car. American circuits ARE EMPTY for the most part and thats where this car will shine guaranteed. Actually it is the same price as a C7 base after rebate price.
As much as i love the mk4, i don't see much road course modded versions, but the majority are drag modded examples pushing 1k hp (obviously). I agree this car will find its home more on the road courses than on the strip. I know road course mk4s exist, they're just not as common.
RevMatchTV I was patiently waiting for reviews and thoughts of people who are able to drive it and I defended the car once the name Supra was coming back. I wish it looked more like the FT1 but at least it’s not ugly.
I was on the hate side for this car. After seeing all these reviews, it slowly grew on me. Now, I can’t wait to own a MK5. That’s if I can get my hands on one because of the high demand it’s starting to receive.
You're a big fail, no journalist who tested the car ever said it lacks horsepower, and that engine has enough potential to get that additional horsepower with a easy tune if wanted. If they didn't collab with BMW this supra would have cost over 100k and therefore unattainable for most enthusiasts even tho a 3jz would be awesome but I'd rather have a chance of buying it when it depreciates from 50k then never have it and love it. They wanted this car on as many hands as they could and the Supra was never meant to be a supercar with crazy horsepower numbers and a crazy price tag.
Smiled thru this entire video. The Mark V will definitely do better than the Mark IV in sales. We all know the Mark IV sales were horrible thru its 5 year existence, causing Toyota to discontinue its production. The Mark V will definitely surprise many fanboys with its stock numbers and astonish even more after modifications.
Exciting times ahead, I can't wait for this to all unfold on RU-vid. Did you notice the interpreter for Supra's chief engineer Tatsuya Tada at the launch, was no other than Toshi Hayama, who was the technical director for The Fast and the Furious-Tokyo Drift. Hopefully he will use a modified A90 Supra in an upcoming installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise, which will elevate the status of the MK5 to a new 'legend'.
MK IV was manufactured and sold for 9 years, 1993-2002. Sales in the U.S. stopped in 1998 and 1996 in Canada.....despite all turbo models in Canada being sold before they even hit the lot.
@@jasonyoung9559 do a little research. Sales of the MK IV didnt take off until after the release of the first Fast and Furious movie which was 2001. The aftermarket didnt see enthusiasm until the year after. I was a, Mk2 and Mk 3 owner and was well aware of the MkIV at that time but decided to pursue other brands due to the MKIV overly expensive price tag for the times, and yes I am aware of the 9 year duration that's why i stated the 5 year sales flop of the mark IV
@@williamwilson5125 What are you talking about? All NEW MK IV were sold in North America before the first stupid movie ever was screened. Over 95% of all new MK IV had sold worldwide before the first F&F movie premiered. I don't know how you can say it was a "sales flop". The last dozen or so new MK IV in the US were sold in 1999. 11,446 units were sent to the U.S. and that is all that was going to be sent during those years regardless of demand since it was a limited production number car. How limited? More Honda Civic's are manufactured in 40 days than Toyota had the capacity to produce the MK IV over a 9 year period.
I think the car is awesome I think. For the anniversary edition for the 370z they should have used the twin turbo Infiniti engine at least for the Nissan fans with a real 6speed transmission. Problem is the power and the torque. But vehicle dynamics is still pretty good. Oh well Supra it is S14 going up for sale...Nissan you been letting me down real hard...should take some lessons from Toyota
Randall Lawkin man I hear yah ...I love Nissan/Datusun... other than the out of reach priced and aging GTR what else have they done except fail at a fan base chomping at the bit??
Also the car doesn't look outdated (NISMO version). They could add the turbo engine with chassis tweaks, update the interior, headlights and taillights and sell the car another 5 years. Kinda like they did the GTR 😂😂😂
I just wish they'd made the IDX. A new 510 would have been awesome, and competed with the 86. Could have made them some money & brought more of the tuning community over to them.
Really? Go on Supraforums and post this comment, youll be laughed out. Most legit dislike is coming from current Supra owners. This is not the Supra we were expecting, quite underwhelming.
Brett: How do you know what someone can afford from their comments? For the money, the Supra seems really nice. I'd like the Mustang GT too, but too many issues re reliability. That may stem from people pushing the car hard, but still, people push other sporty cars hard.
You are correct that there are a lot of factors, but gearing doesn't play nearly as big a factor as traction does on 0-60, and subsequently Quarter Mile ET or MPH. If you look at most drag cars they often have powerglide 2-speed transmissions with big stall converters. The new Koenegsegg Ragera has only a one speed variable torque converter transmission. The MPH mostly comes from power, or more accurately average power under the curve between shifts. This is why more gearing can have a good effect, by keeping the curve in the optimal area. But the Supra has so much low down torque that it has a really long power curve. So it not only makes ~400hp at the crank, it makes above 370hp for most of it's used power curve.
Not only that, the torque converter doesn't lock up until high up in the revs (according to Toyota) so effectively the engine behaves a little like a CVT in every gear, meaning the Supra's powertrain punches well above its weight by bringing that higher RPM horsepower down to the midrange, and that midrange grunt even gets brought down to low RPMs, you're basically never waiting for the turbo, which is low boost anyway so already quick to spool, +with all the exhaust popping which is delayed ignition, that turbo is constantly in spool for as long as possible & with that short water to air intake tract the response out of this thing is going to be like that of an NA car especially considering it's a high compression engine so only the littlest boost is needed in the first place. Toyota truly designed the engine to be responsive in a way that no other turbo engine can be, this is something that's important to track days & usability but hard to notice on a dyno' or 0-60s.
So this means the engine isn't 335bhp clearly as the 0-60 shows a way quicker time, also the balance of the car must be amazing - grip, the way the power is put down so it doesn't just spin. Love the way Toyota have approached this supra. Just enough power and perfect chassis. Only reason the supra is "335" is because it's a BMW engine and they wouldn't let them have a more powerful car than the z4 that's why there is 40~bhp difference so the z4 can sell easily, but the supra is superior even with less power.
Yeah, I'm sure it must of been in the contract/agreement that BMW provided to Toyota in that they cannot sell the Supra with a stock B58 engine more powerful than the new Z4. Or maybe that Toyota cannot 'advertise/market' their Supra to be more powerful than the new Z4. BMW have to give reason for people to pay more money to buy the Z4, and a more powerful engine would be one of them.
@@itsJulianLam Exactly my thought, but the toyota chassis is better because it has roof and is much stiffer so it is better tuned for track/fast road unlike the z4 where it is more of a cruiser. But it will be pretty easy to gain the missing power with an easy remap as these engines are ready for 420-440bhp with just a stage 1 map.
As you alluded to in your video, here in Australia the new Supra pricing was just announced 4 days ago, our top spec model will be known as the 'GTS' which will have the 19 inch wheels, leather seats, 8.8 inch touchscreen, etc. This is essentially the same as the 3.0 Premium model in the US, although our local pricing is so much more expensive at $104,379 AUD ($71,723 USD). We will only be receiving an allocation of 300 units in the first 12 months, sold in 3 stages/batches, and due to huge interest and demand it will all be sold via an online internet process, so all successful buyers will pay the same price, with no dealer greed markup, on a first in, first serve basis. The first 100 units will be offered in 4 weeks, with delivery around September/October. Hhmm, now should I go for red or yellow.
Uhm, I don't remeber this, as far as I know new silvia project was shelved long time ago and replaced with Juke as a car for young people. Just google nissan new Z, their chief designer confirmed info about new Z
Just a heads up Jason from Engineering Explained does indeed discuss gearing often like the hero he is. Excellent channel by the way, been following for nearly a year now. Keep up the great work here!
Daily Street Racing if it doesn’t least what the 335 and other 35/40i models been doing with little bit of aftermarket support it should be candy sho with the tuners
Daily Street Racing heyy big fan. I can’t wait too. People were retarded for bashing on this car. Why would you put a 10+ year old motor in a Supra. And this car will perform soo good i can’t wait
Like mentioned by engineering explained, the supra engine is beefed up for super juice... The 2jz will not be missed in some months with the real tuners... Not day job drivers like the haters - dougy demuro and their ilks
Revmatch trust me yellow is the best im shocked you made that choice coz lot people also like the metallic silver or is it gray and also the red. Yellow suits this car a lot
I'm tossing whether to get yellow or red. The red definitely shows off all the curves on the body and rear wheel arches better as you notice the reflections more. With yellow being a brighter colour, you don't notice the reflections as much as a darker colour.
Toyota while making the supra : We will make the car have insane hp but we will limit it so people have to modify it for the hidden power figure so they lose warranty
Ayy man iam in NYC bought mine for 68k in red I get alot of hate and trash talk for me wasting my money but I love the car n iam happy ...cheers 2020 mk5
All well and good until you realise car manufacturers have a habit of using press cars with more power than the ones they finally release. It's probably the reason press cars get scrapped after the showroom release so, no comparison can be made between the 2.
I think best is wait for a while. See other buyers’(those who are buying the launch edition) comments/reactions about the Supra, if it is reliable enough, with great aftermarket support. The Supra has just returned after a long hiatus so it would be hard to tell anything regarding Supra. Upon learning if the Supra will have good feedback, then I think that would be the perfect time to get a new Supra. We could also make sure that there would be no more dealer markups as well.
From the beginning you were one of the few who was supporting the new supra and try to change the opinion of the haters(its a bmw its a zupra its a z4 ) the car looks good its fast and reasonable priced and sells well ! So you were 100% right
This is actually against them because they lied saying it makes only 336hp. It’s like when tuners lie to you and decrease your hp so they would say “ look, low hp but good performance
We like the MK4 because it’s rigid and cheap to modify. The new supra (according to Tada) depends heavily on 3rd party parts makers which means more cost.
Sport auto did a test with the new z4, which has the very same engine and it produced 272ps at the wheels (357 at crank) and did 0-100 kph in 4.9s. Given the z4 and supra weigh almost the same and technically are fitted with the same Michelin PSS tire, it is hard to believe the supra is that much faster to 100kph. To me it is very likely that the CAD's dyno is reading high and their drag strip offers better traction than the German press's.
The issue is that we don't know how much torque the z4 is actually putting down. Tada-san said they used some "things they learned from WRC." In WRC, cars were restricted by power, not so much with the torque iirc. So with that much torque, better acceleration. We'll have to wait until we get a head to head video
If you read the article it clearly stats this was not testing in a 1:1 gear due to the speed limiter kicking in. The numbers are 100% inflated. Not saying its not over 330 but 100% not 425 lbs
Considering this is a test car, I wouldn't be surprised if the boost of upped just a tad bit to give it more power so all the journalists will give it a better review.
I'm sure there will still be separate intake manifold intercooler kits available basically day 1, hahaha. Very impressive numbers compared to advertised!
News going around saying without BMW Toyota would of taken until 2021 to build a new Supra.. This translates to Toyota never thought about building a Supra until they realized customer demands were high.
Oh yeah. No doubt. Looks like it moves along quite snappy for sure. Just that you hear about companies in general doing these things he all the time. All we’ve seen is review models as well no “I just bought this” reviews. Probably right however, Toyota would not want to besmirch their excellent image. It sells cars.
Have they said anything about warranty on the car? I’ve never owned one myself but reputation around where I’m from says they barely last 100,000mi, if the MFG warranty is above that I might have to seriously begin checking out the new Supra
I knew it... I bet ya the US spec Supra makes exactly the same power as the US spec Z4 M40i. What tipped me off to this possibility was that the engineer suggested the US spec. was louder then the euro model do to emissions.
The new Supra has similar 0-60 and 1/4 mile times as the new 10 speed mustang gt. The Supra is only slightly faster in a straight line, and I imagine immensely faster around corners due to 50/50 weight balance. Only reason I bring up the mustang is because you can get similar performance for less money (excluding cornering capability).
I’m in Australia and was seriously considering the Supra. The price was an instant reality check. Now if it was a full Toyota build a lot more people would be sharing my disappointment rite now 😞
I'm all for the supra, I would just wait till the 2nd gen. I'm sick of these so called fans who have probably never even been in the car, let alone drive one.
Good review. While I personally have some issues with the car, I'm glad it was produced and hit the market. It will add to the sports car mix and keep them alive. Beyond the Toyota vs BMW points this looks to be a very solid, tunable sports car with even better performance than expected. Look forward to some comparison tests and track times, etc.
