The AFL did a great job to even be able to have a season. Look at competitions all over the world. Soccer, NBA, tennis, even the Olympics were impacted. To suggest the AFL ruined the season is rubbish. They did the best they could under the circumstances.
Bro, I didn’t actually mind the GF being held at night, we still had a BBQ outside and we just had the family inside of the house, not much difference 🤷
This is a big miss am afraid KingKaleen - what else were they supposed to do? It was a pandemic near-unprecedented in human history - we were lucky to get any footy at all
How the AFL ruined it? They didn't choose between A) have a normal season or B) have a pandemic effected season with reduced quarters etc etc etc They did what they could to keep the season running at all in a time most sports just stopped entirely.
Brother seriously, this was all out of the AFLs control. And it shows you don’t know what you’re talking about. Firstly you said Maguire would be happy about the revenue… he literally runs channel 9 not channel 7. The afl made the product as good as they could.
Eddie McGuire has said on multiple occasions that he wants the AFL to run night grand finals. Some of it the AFL had no control over, while some of it they did, including AFLW season cancellation, night grand final and 16 minute quarters.
@@Kaleen_YT yeah but saying eddie wanted it for money is incorrect because he works for nine. Running the AFLW wouldve cost the AFL more money and wouldnt of been worth at all during those economically hard times and the night grand final was an amazing spectacle. if they had full length quarters after players had 3 months off what sort of soft tissue injury crisis would we have had?
@@harpervowles7067 The eddie maguire part you are correct on, his primary motivation was TV ratings. Gillon McLachlan regreted cancelling the AFLW, showing that the AFL did not make the right decision. The night grand final is personal opinion, almost everyone I know hated it but you can have your own opinon. The full length quarters part, you have a valid point.
cancelling the AFLW, cutting quarters to 16 minutes and night grand finals were all extremely in the AFL's control. Gabba grand final you coul argue. I may be late to the party but I thought it was an interesting topic
@@Kaleen_YT the only thing I had a problem with was stopping the aflw. I don't have a problem with anything else. The whole country was dealing with unprecedented circumstances. At least we had football
Every team playing every team the same amount of times in the regular season was the best thing about the 2020 season. 2021 grand final was worse than 2020, at least Richmond and Geelong fans (if they had faith in their team before the prelim) had the opportunity to quarantine in the NT for two weeks then go, same wasn't afforded to the dees and dogs fans the following year
What is this ungrateful crap? The AFL did an amazing job to bring us some footy that year and it helped get us through. BTW I also much prefer the day GF.
@@Kaleen_YT ooooft that’s even worse :p I don’t think 2020 was a failure on the part of the afl it was a shitfight for every competition of professional sport.
No 1. The only reason I saw the 2020 flag in the flesh was because of covid. So there's that. 2. We are very very lucky that little virus wasnt 5-8% more deadly. 3. Is this video borderline RWNJ/antivax?
The 2020 season was so unique tho. We literally had like 18 days of football in a row. And the grand final was special in Brisbane. Brisbane is the only city to hold both the afl and nrl grandfinals, i wasn’t fortunate to see the afl game as it sold so fast, but I was lucky to see my panthers win their first comp since 2003. What we learned from the 2020 and 2021 seasons is nrl and afl grandfinal can and should be moved around.
Highly disagree on your views you forgot to mention by the afl to not cancel the season it gave alot of people hope in a shitty situation being that covid year . Poor take and short sided views
Bro acting like this wasn't the only way to get the season done. Not the AFL's fault they had to change everything, lol. But their decision for a night grand final was disgraceful
Reading these comments some of you can't share different opinions, or think there's a timeline where opinions are no longer valid. Are any of you even Australian? Telling someone "shocking take" or the equivalent without explaining why is a shocking fucking take on anything in itself. Without putting words in mouths and all of that whatnot, what would have been easier was to resume the AFL season without hindrance, you know, never having called it off for any period of time and definitely not cutting quarters down by 4 minutes. The AFL fell victim to coronavirus propaganda but what can you expect from an organization that virtue-signals, preaches safety over freedom of choice every chance it gets and participates in American wokeism trash.
@@jamies3031 if you'd care to explain why it's a shit take, I'd be more inclined to take you seriously which is what you want by responding to this in the first place. if you aren't fluent in English, that's fine, at least give it a go.
@@jamies3031 also, AFL is Australia's cash cow franchise/business. We don't need rainbow flags in our sport but we do. You tell me that AFL's virtue-signaling and rule changes aren't intended to rake in money from people that also follow American idealism and glorify it, you know it's targeted towards younger people. The problem with following ideologies is that you never hold yourself accountable, you blame the ideology. AFL is in the business of making money, more so than ever, it just appears that they are corrupting the sport by desperately trying to achieve new standards, if you can call them standards. New standards are allowing umpires to give the opposition the ball, 50m penalties and goals whenever their feelings are hurt by a player disagreeing with their call. I'd enjoy a thorough debate about this since you disagree but you'll probably just say "shit take" and personally, at this point, I can't blame you. Have a good day, Jamie-boy.
everyone here defending the afl for managing the season well during a "pandemic" when it was a disgrace that the footballers were able to go to their job but the working class couldn't and their businesses shut down because of the actions of the government.
The AFL did the best under the circumstances. Every major sports league in the world was impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic and I think the AFL did well to get through it. Also and I said this at the time you don't know that Fremantle would have won the AFLW premiership. Other teams at the time like Carlton and North Melbourne were serious contenders as well.
@urbanyouths A preliminary final is different compared to an NRL grand final. They also have other grand finals for different leagues. How could they create the NRL within the span of 12hrs?
@urbanyouths 12 hrs is estimating when the celebrations would be done, (which would probs be 12am as it’s a night Grand Final). And the teams would probably want to train on the field before the match so 12pm is when you’d wanna be done as 2pm is when the first curtain raiser begins.
The fact we had a season is a amazing. The AFL did the best they could given the circumstance. Living in Melbourne = Lockdown was sheeeit. But yeah, give the AFL. A break
