The new 2020 Toyota 86 GT is an Awesome Sports Coupe and this one I'm reviewing is upgraded with TRD parts. Check out the interior, exterior, the engine, and my thoughts on the drive and decide if this is the right two-door coupe for you.

I looked at the 86 and BRZ and because of getting 0 % interest four year financing bought the 2016 BRZ. I loved how the car handled but knew when I bought it it was gutless and I would be modifying it soon. Within a month I had DD Performance Research of Houston install the Edelbrock Eforce supercharger which took my wheel HP up to 285 on 93 Octane. NOW it's an awesome daily driver and occasional track car. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this mod, the car comes alive with it yet retains good drivability. I didn't go turbocharged because it just gives TOO much power and engine longevity issues usually arise. Hard to tune a turbo as well as a daily driver too. Note the 2.0L boxer engine does fine under 300HP but go higher and there's lots of bent rods and blown head gaskets. The 285HP is perfect, not too much, not too little! I don't understand why Toyota / Subaru don't give the car decent power, even the new engine upgrade is a trivial amount. Someone in the insurance industry told me that with higher power it would break a threshold and rates would go up, maybe the automaker's were trying to keep cost of ownership down? Using the 2.5 WRX engine would make the Twins one of the best affordable entry level sports cars on the market and I think they'd sell a lot more if them. Note that other than changing the wheels to 17x8"+35 and running SuperSports, changing the front camber to -4 degrees and putting on high performance brake pads the car is otherwise stock / stealth. It kicks ass in cornering on streets and has awesome passing ability on the highway.

Great review! What an awesome car. Reminds me of my old MG but so much better. With the new BRZ and 86 models coming out you should be able to get a fully equipped one like this with all the TRD parts at a great deal. So glad Toyota and Subaru are still making fun cars like this with a manual. This is a car for people who love to drive. We actually had the 86 on our short list for a second car ever since I saw one at the dealer while I was getting my Toyota serviced. As a young dad with a family we really needed something with a usable back seat with a good warranty and I love driving so the car had to have a manual. I also hate big cars. The 3 cars on our short list were the Honda Civic Type R, the Hyundai Veloster N and the Toyota 86 GT TRD. We ended up with the Type R and LOVE it but to be honest with you, I am just glad cars like this are still being made and that I actually had a choice. If you love these kind of cars, show the car manufacturers by scraping the money together and buying them because as time goes on, cars like this are becoming harder and harder for them to make and you can tell they put some passion into them.

I am currently looking for a new manual transmission car to replace the one I am still driving since new in 2006. Mazda3 2.0L 5 speed sedan.... I live near Chattanooga, TN and it is hard to find a manual on dealer lots even if the manufacturer is still making them.

@@t.k.morris Call the dealers and make some requests for manual. Remind them the demand is out there or if you hear one becomes available buy sight unseen. That is what we did with our Type R. Once we found one at a Honda dealer we made all the arrangements over the phone. The first time I drove it was after I bought it. Scary, yes but not really because I already did a ton of research on the car and I knew if I slept on this car someone else would gladly pick it up. Good luck man.

If they put a turbo on this the car world is finished. But a supercharger will make this super fun

Toyota keeps badging all these cars of theirs with TRD but never make any performance improvements with their engines. So what's the point... so they can make MORE money???

If you have any engine trouble with this 86, does Toyota work on it or send it to a Subaru dealer?

I have got used to side mirror blind spot monitoring that this car does not have. I like the Hakone edition dark green paint. For 30 thousand new, the all-electric Mini Cooper is worth a test drive, and renting another car for long trips because of the short battery range.

Is this 86 as peppy as a Mazda3 hatchback with the 2.5L naturally aspirated motor and manual transmission?

Help Please I need your opinion please. I am looking to replace my daily driver that I bought new in 2006. ( Mazda3 5 speed sedan ) ... I would like to find something that will satisfy me as much as my Mazda3 has over the years. It is fun to drive, it has been very reliable and easy to maintain. If Mazda had this same car available new, I would buy it again. I am not interested in 0-60 times, not interested in which car is faster on a track. In a manual only and I would want something considered to be reliable for 10 years at least. Can you recommend something please that might be a good value and fun to drive everyday ? ... Examples like Mazda Miata RF or ST, Toyota Corolla, Honda SI or Sport Touring Hatchback, Kia Forte GT, VW GTI, Nissan 370z, Veloster Turbo R or N, Toyota 86, Genesis G70 or BMW 230i coupe ??? Or any others you may think of to recommend. Thanks for all of your reviews, you do a great job!

Civic Type R hands down if you want something amazing to drive everyday. Its also practical and very comfortable. Plus its very fast :).

@@DriversOnly Thank you but I am not willing to pay over MSRP for the Civic Type R and I would want something with smaller wheels and less "Look at Me" styling.

@@DriversOnly We bought the Honda Civic Type R and LOVE it! The other cars on our short list were this Toyota 86 GT and the Hyundai Veloster N. These are also great cars with great warranties and maintenance is included for the first couple of years. You either love the Type R or don't. We obviously love it but the 86 and the Veloster N are more subtle if that is important to you and again they are engineered to last. You can't say that about a BMW.

What are the minor differences between the brz and 86 in terms of driving dynamics?
@natg34
@natg34 4 года назад
Suspensions
@julecasey2376
@julecasey2376 4 года назад
The 86 is more tail happy and looser in the rear end around corners for fun driving and the brz has a bit of a more refined stiffer suspension, so its handling helps for grip rather than less grip like the 86. Both feel very very similar tho. I own an frs which currently has a blown motor im looking at a new 86

@@julecasey2376 was it a stock motor that blew up? what happened?
@julecasey2376
@julecasey2376 4 года назад
@@timothybracken1728 so I own a 2013 frs which is the sister brand of Toyota before scion died out and went back to Toyota as one. About 400k 2013 frs' were recalled for the valve springs and even though my engine wasn't stock, it was Toyota's fault for the blown motor post recall.
