As an owner of the 2019 Prado VX-L, I think its a great vehicle in terms of value for money. this is our 4th prado. You cannot beat the resale value, im sorry! give these 2 vehicles 10 years and I can promise you the defender will be worth less, with far more things that need fixing or replacing. I am sure the defender is a better driving experience, but like my first prado, If I want to drive it to 400000KM with only replacing the essential maintenance items, will it last? Who buys a prado in that colour and that interior, it looks a lot better in silver or white with black leather.
No matter what pain they go through, owners of LR Defenders generally never sell them. Owners of Prado's on the other hand sell and buy newer models in a few years.
The Defender reminds me a bit of Jeremy Clarkson’s comment many years ago about super cars being like dating super models. Everyone wants to own one and be seen with one, but nobody hears you cry because of all the high maintenance :-)
@@anthonytromp6265 I have actually. But the motorplan will unfortunately not cover the Defender depreciating faster than government aid or PPE money “mysteriously disappearing”... let alone the embarrassment for the owner seeing the R1.4mil Defender being brought back to the nearest dealer on a lowbed truck.
@@anthonytromp6265 yeah..and after you covered 75000kms and many trips to the dealership to fix all the odd software gremlins, you will probably not get back half as nobody would take you bags of problems from you LOL
@Nomen Clature take your time! Lol. Basically, you’ve just described everything my land rovers have done, my 20 year old disco which we’ve owned from new has served a brilliant, been all over Europe and up inside the artic circle, down to the south of Spain, all over Scotland and Ireland and it’s performed just fine! My work vehicle is a 30 year old 200tdi defender, I’ve had that for 19years and it’s covered over 300,000 miles, it’s let me down once in that time when a clutch exploded, infact, all the Land Rover products have been just fine, that’s well over 30 years... Unfortunately people have done their best to slaughter the Land Rover product over the years, most have never even driven one!
@Nomen Clature another one who can’t argue against facts, yet happy to put silly little comments on subjects they know nothing about! I’ll catch you again sometime in the comments section, fingers crossed I won’t have to school you again regarding the Land Rover brand...
@Nomen Clature well if I’m anything I’d like to think I’m an honest man...the truth is that last comment was aimed at another person on another video, so I will apologies for getting you mixed up....I’ll try again, I wouldn’t say I’m proud, I just like to give a good account of my experiences with the Land Rover, I’ve also had some in the Toyota out in Australia!
@@PillSharks the older generation ones are perfect , its these newer models which are a problem. if there was an Olympics gold medal for the least reliable car manufacturer definitely Land rover would take it
Hard to believe that the Defender broke on a test run, but then it is a snow car and he did take it on some minor dust. I had a 90 series Prado for 18 years and 320,000km. No trouble. Then a D4. Things doors would not open at a campsite in Bots. Help consisted of me being told to 'bring it to Johannesburg for a software upgrade", while actually, a door actuator had failed. After that I wouldn't leave phone contact range with a dealer, which basically means stay in the city. Back to a 150 Prado. I know I will get back home each time I go out. 10 USB ports don't help with that.
I love the new Defender and I wouldn't mind owning one myself. But in 10 years time the Prado will still be running perfectly and be worth 3 times that of a Defender of the same age.
Of all my years of driving I’ve never cared about how a cabin looks as long as it serves it’s intended purpose which the prado does perfectly, the exterior though I care for and the prado is not a bad looking car to my eyes. The landy looks good too and it certainly turns heads, but just as a new phone, once you are done running through the new features and settings that will probably never use, you just want something reliable that works perfect. This is probably the reason apple flagships out sell Samsung by numbers to 1. Remember it’s easier to throw away 1000$ on a phone than it is to throw 50-100k on a car, therefore the more sensible buy is the more reliable product. It would be nice to have some of the features from the landy in the prado but I’d rather have peace of mind than a bunch of tech I will only go through in the first weeks of ownership and get bored of later in a car riddled with unreliability issues. Motoring journalist are the only ones who get this nit picky since they only have the car during the period of running through all its features, also their turn on is more and more features that’s why this review ends up like this.
These are both off road 4x4’s (even LR say that). Biggest priority of such a vehicle is reliability and off road capability. IF, the Defender was as reliable as to Prado, it would be a world beater. But as the reviewer said, there is a reason so many people pick the Prado.
The facts, Prado you could drive off the showroom floor and across Australia without any modifications. Land Rover, you drive off the showroom floor and collect the kids from school while portraying the image of being able to cross Australia. Land Rover is all about image, Prado is the real thing.
Fairly sure that the Prado and 200 Series LC are overdue for replacement with a single modern new model. The Defender was not prepared properly by the supplying dealer, which should have updated the software and done a pre-delivery inspection before letting it loose in the wild. If it is a press car, someone needs their bottom spanked by a thorn bush.
The new LC300 is getting to Australia end of the year. All the 200s has been sold out due to the rush to secure a V8 for towing. They speak of 2023 for new gen Prado.
Land Rover quality is sloppy from start to finish, that is why they rank at the very bottom of reliability surveys. Its just percieved as quality through outstanding marketing. Without reliability percieved quality is nothing but empty promises.
I own a lower spec Prado and I‘m pretty happy with it‘s interior. Easy to clean and in some areas quite utilitarian. I think that’s part of the philosophy of the Land Cruiser model range. They aren’t pretty but they don’t let you down what makes them they best buy. I wouldn’t spend any money on a Tata Rover. Older Discos and Defenders might be good off roaders but the later stuff is premium rubbish to show off.
I know 1 person who drives a new Defender - It also has electric window issues. When the driver's window rolls up, the passenger window rolls down. Now you're supposed to trust a car like that driving into the bundu in South Africa. Hmmm
TFL Car channel went through 3 new Defenders within 200 miles and the 3rd is still giving intermittent problems. These new Defenders will not appeal to overlanders/tourers like the old ones because they are too expensive, complicated and for the forseable future, not 3rd party customisable. This is for all intents and purposes really a new Discovery. They missed the brief and are selling a vehicle they think the customer wants.
Great vid. I'm a current 150 Prado owner. And past Range Rover owner and Lexus LX owner etc. Yep totally agree. If I had staff to run around booking in my repairs, dropping off the Landrover for me, a spare car for the down time with repairs, and of course copiuos quantities of cash to pay for all the broken stuff on the Landrover, and the staff wages, and the spare car, id have the Landrover everyday. But Im a pretty average Australian who wants to know he can always return from a trip without all the stuffing around that comes with the Landrover. And to be honest if I was rolling in it id probably buy another LX actually.😊
Of course the Prado is not in the same category of the Defender, for which the Land Cruiser is the better match up. So I’ll ask this question for the zillionth time, immaterial of all the new gadgetry and gimmicks of all new models....which vehicle is more trusted to travel through deep dark Africa ?.....just do an online search and the answer will be unanimous...Toyota all the way !!
Doug Demuro's brand new defender's door weatherstrip is already coming off and the moonroof broke. And this reviewers defender window switch already broke HAHA.
Simply love my Prado. Its such a reliable Beast. Driving it for 6 solid years and still turns heads and man o man the reliability, comfort and total strength, AND quite cheap to maintain. Love love love Toyota Land cruiser Prado. I owned a Land Rover Free lander before.... My ow my, the worst car ever, ridiculously expensive to maintain and part replacements was absolutely ridiculous and super expensive.
Let's be honest, both these vehicles are probably two of the most comfortable off road vehicles with air suspension and all the other goodies. They will probably never see the less traveled roads, mall crawl and school runs are what they are known for mainly. However which one do you want to be in when it breaks whilst in a remote location, or traveling with your family. How many land rover dealerships are in the northern cape towards botswana or namibia and how many Toyota dealers do you pass on your way there? That's just my opinion, it doesn't need an answer or argument. its an opinion not a debate?
Go and have a look at the issues TFL offroad had with their THREE new defenders. Also, not sure if you drove the same speeds, but the prado is a lot more quite on the gravel road compared to the defender.
The second TFL Defender didn't not have any mechanical issues at all. The car mulfuctioned after a Land Rover technician damaged the sensors while he was installing a winch on it.
Now imagine that LR glitch finds you out and about and it affects the electronic suspension ... And you need a software update to fix it out of any form of internet zone. To add to that, no one drives with their hand on the dashboard, put soft comfy materials where they are needed, let the rest drive value ... Which makes Toyotas sensible and LRs ridiculous.
I have a Prado and love it! They have 78% of the market in Australia as we actually use them for their intended purpose. Off-road touring and beach driving. Hence the nice 160l diesel tank. If you think this is big, Toyota sells more Landcruisers than Prados. You know, the ones with the twin turbo V8 4.5l. If you want reliability and hassle free off-road driving, buy Toyota Prado. If you want to drive in the city, buy a RAV4 hybrid or some sort of SUV.
My grandchildren will probably be driving the prado to varsity in the year 2051, can't say the same for the Land Rover which been notorious for break downs!
Every time I've watched any Defender review, something has gone wrong with it. I think the models they use in videos are a bit shy and start to break....
nice that you want to show the difference between the Prado and the Defender. but you should not forget that the Toyota is generally much cheaper to maintain and also much stronger!
Yep - thats an easy question; Of more than 2 mill. Defenders produced for more than 60 years - roughly 70% is still running. I don’t have the Toyota numbers...
@@scandinavia6271 Interesting fact...all 70% of the defenders you are revering to have had the engines, gearboxes, and suspension components completely rebuild. I know, because I've owned several myself. I wonder how many Prado's are still running today with their original engines and gearboxes? That's the difference.
Someone said defender has 10 ports so that when stuck in the bush every family member gets a chance to charge his phone so that they can google how to fix the car😭
This was a comparison between a Land Rover Defender 110 and a Land Rover Defender recovery vehicle. That aside, Land Rover makes some very nice vehicles and if they had the same reliability as Toyota, nobody would buy a Prado.
200 series Land Cruiser should be the natural rival. For the real world user...you should know what you are going to be doing obviously make an informed decision from there. Took our Defender extreme off roading after just 4 days of taking delivery if it.
If your a single guy into women get this car.... are you serious ?? calling the Prado interior hideous, really? This was the most biased review I have ever seen
I may have missed it, but I didn't hear mention of the fact that the Land Rover Defender is no longer a body on frame vehicle. That is a big minus for an off road vehicle.
@@henniebester9437 I had to look up the Pajero (not something we get in US/Canada). I would expect a Mitsubishi, and just about everything else, to be more reliable than a LR. If I'm buying an off road capable vehicle though 90% of what I would look at would be body on frame.
Mmm, personal opinion really. I have the cream in my Prado cause I like it better than the black. But yes both are very dated, and old school. Still I'd always buy the Toyota.
Having test driven the new Defender I agree, its a fantastic futuristic very nice car to drive, etc. beautiful decorated and modern and I like modern cars. But will I buy it? No, rather the Prado, solid and reliable and economical enough . And my wife doesn’t like it, so its a new Prado. Even though Toyotas sale service is not great. But after sales service is.
RU-vid recently refered your reviews to me and I must say I loved it! You apparently got a huge sense of humor! I don't care what cars you're reviewing now lol
I will take the prado anyday of the year, toyota delivers what they promise and live up to their reputation, no nonsense un necessary complications, they are all about practicality and unless you live in Europe, you are in safe hands with toyota.
New Toyota Prado coming out 2022/23 than this comparison will be very different! Land Rover reliability is very poor, way to many issues with them and very expensive to maintain. Can’t beat Toyota on reliability and re sale.
Bring these cars in Namibia and I take the Prado, no brainer. That’s what the Prado is all about. Bring you to secluded places and bring you home in 1 piece.
Ciro: Past 140km/h - which is illegal - the Prado is not as planted. Prado and Fortuner owners: (proceed to travel between 120 and 140 on average on highways)
Prado is the champion This journalist doesn't have to own a land rover and have the issues hence he can irresponsibly flap his mouth... Land cruiser sells because it does what the owner want well and is reliable...not too mention reasonably priced Defenders all-over the world are sitting at the dealers with a grocery list issues Land Rover known globally as unreliable. Toyotas view is perfect...wait till the technology is mainstream and reliable then launch it
So in summary, the Defender is like a new iPhone. Stylish, full of features, premium look & feel, built to last about 3 years. The Prado, much like Nokia's of old, gets the job done, is not for those who care about their online clout score, and is built to last as long as is physically possible.
First impression of the Land Cruiser 150…. Wow that A pillar is wide and bound to restrict visibility. Second impression… They certainly don't last forever, although they are very well built. My friend has an early D4D 90 series and I have a big 100 Series, my second LC bought new but now scrapped at the bottom of my yard due to extremely expensive repairs needed. My friend's 90 series needed a replacement rear axle a few years ago due to the original casing rusting out.
I can only presume you use them for what they should be used...proper work and off road fun...can you imagine the many problems you would have had with a Land Rover
@@danielbredenkamp3957 I had a Land Rover 110 pickup for 22 years until it was scrapped due to being generally too worn out to justify repairing a failed piston in its Diesel engine. I've had two big [80 and the 100 series] and three Range Rovers plus a Discovery MkI plus many other brands over the years and the only ones to have left me stranded were another 110 [a station wagon], the 80 series Land Cruiser whose fuel injection pump failed and a BMW X5 that had electrical issues. The last Range Rover I owned was the best built and most reliable of them all, a 2004 model, and I ran it concurrent with the 100 Series, the 110 pickup and an Isuzu Trooper plus something else, I can't quite remember the timeline.
It seems like the road noise in the Defender is significantly greater than the Prado, so if that’s what you’re paying for with the more expensive materials then count me out, maybe it can be fixed with a software update 😆
the only problem is I've already seen a couple of videos where the Land Rover broke down...and it was new..like brand new...electronics problem, etc...
Haha, my defender has to go off-road every day just to get out of the plot, and yes, our roads haven’t seen a grader in 4 years so all we have left are tracks. This week I have already towed 4 vehicles out of the mud.
As much as lovely and modern the defender is, it can still be a let down. The reason why buyers are opting for brand new vehicles over used ones is because they mostly want something that is hassle free and won't give them headaches in the long run. But sadly, the land rover fails to deliver in that part. It's just like ford; equipped with the latest boat loads of fancy technology at the expense of cheap quality. And what sucks is that you pay higher only to get something like that in return. Meanwhile, the prado also has its faults. While it's not all bad overall, the price is a bit high for something that has a decade-old platform although it is due for replacement next year. Exterior is decent but ofc interior is very meh compared to the new ute. Tho hey, at least it does have some gadgetry inside and is much more modern compared to something more traditional and spartan like the retiring pajero. Also it's obvious that it's tough as nails too. My conclusion, the defender may be the more friendly vehicle in terms of experience on-road/off-road because it's a lot fresher, luxurious and jam-packed with features that makes the prado look like an average ute. However, the latter is still better all-around tho especially when it's remarkable in things like reliability, resale value, network, simplicity and like the defender, it's premium as well albeit in an old-fashioned way. But if you are a serious offroader tho, what makes the prado more capable is that it won't let you down in case you have to traverse through flood or rivers. Whereas the rover may break down because its fully of electric stuff. So there's that too.
If I was crossing the Kalahari or the Outback, I would want the Landcruiser, and certainly not anything from Land Rover. Looks doesn't matter when your life depends on your vehicle not breaking down in the middle of nowhere.
lol, i actually kinda like the toyota interior, only downside really for me is i know its a third party infotainment so bluetooth might be shit and its not really intergrated into the car that good. But that's fine, all I need is it to be able to play music form my phone, ill just buy a phone holder and use google maps/waze/etc.
I’m Japanese, and I know lot about the suv 🚙, prado land cruiser is 100 times better than the defender or even other Land Rover family Go get your Toyota prado land cruiser Tx /AT/MT ... you won’t regret for life And it’s very easy to sale or trade
Like you say, not Apples for Apples. The Defender would be in the category of the LandCruiser 200 series (and better than it) rather than the smaller baby LC Prado.
@@akilghosh they are the same and not remain the same. As the reviewer said LR feels like the future and Toyota feels like the past. And yea recycling is good for the planet.
9:04 The reason why I’d never get a Toyota product. I just think they’re rearranging old building blocks and convincing people it’s a new product when it really isn’t.
I also watch TFL, they too had a Defender that misbehaved. In the US they also said the same thing. So buy one yes but be prepared to be in first name basis with the servicing department (who will also have no idea what gone wrong with your car)
In my honest opinion they should have just kept the old shap of the defender and modernized it. And call this one the freelander3. And it would have been a rival for the G wagon because let's be honest the only car that is in is a rivel to it is the Jimny and the rangler
Josh in the USA the new Defender sold more cars in six mouths than the old model did in five years.People who buy cars don't want that old model enough more.
@@anthonytromp6265 I am not saying throw away the car I am saying they should have rather called it the freelander3. And ungraded the defender give it more tec and give the body an upgrade
Please do not and never compare the new Defender to the Prado, it's an insult. Because the Prado is in a totally different league! The Defender should compare with jeep or other crap boxes where they belong!
@Nomen Clature buy a luxury car except depreciation. Plus land rover isn't even that unrelible just these nut heads who say there reliable and act like they're an expert of the car by one Google search they're the type of people who don't know the difference between an alternator and a turbo.
@@jeff1595 That’s what landrover dealers say. It actually is very unreliable, check the satistics from all round the world. Furthermore it has one of the worse dealership experience here in NZ/Aus, they think they are doing you a favour by selling you their car lol. Defender is not a luxury car by any means anyway, its a confused discovery at best.
I owe a Defender P400, it is absolutely lovely, but you are sort of always tense, what will suddenly go wrong, hoping it won't be serious, wear in the Prada you have the confidence that everything will just keep going Right.
