Roxie's actress is on point! Her genuine excitement at the attention, the doll-like eyes & posture when she's being controlled, the "are you kidding?" line, then looking back at Billy when he reacts -- you really get a sense for her character in a matter of seconds, and you can easily differentiate between puppet Roxie and real Roxie, without any of the tricks the movie employed.
as far as i noticed the only thing different was the lack of Mary Sunshine dialogue and duet with Billy Flynn but taking it out doesn't change too much and this was really beautifully done
@@user-fn2lo1cz8q I'm also really curious about a Korean's perspective on this. Since I'm American, I know about the American "roaring 20s" culture & moral clashes of this time. For example, the idea that women doing traditionally masculine things like wearing shorter hair and drinking alcohol were scandalous and morally repugnant to the older generation. Is this common knowledge in Korea? If it's not, did they do anything in the translation to explain to the audience why lines like "jazz and liquor" would be relevant in this situation?
I am screaming, that was absolutely fantastic. The dancers had the Choreography on point, the costume designer did a fantastic job, both leads were absolutely amazing with the singing, the performance, and the timing. Also, the male leads last note was mind-blowing! I'd love to see the full performance because that clip has me HOOKED!!!!!!
It took me a moment to realize that this was probably recorded during the pandemic. It's still a weird feeling knowing that we went so long without live shows.
@@olandir I live in Korea and live shows never stopped here. Theaters never shut down during the pandemic, just followed safety precautions (less seating, distancing etc.) I actually saw multiple musicals during the pandemic. This video was for press so there was no audience. Cheeers :)
@L2 Sentinel Due to covid, there has been lots of restriction for live performances in Korea. Right now it’s not allowed for audience to cheer or make any noises. The only way to appreciate cast is through applauses. And also, this was a presscall performance where reporters barely make any noises (to record a “clean” version). I’ve been to this duo’s live performance and the audience applauded after each number.
if you don't know chicago, this is Roxie Hart's first press conference (tl;dr at the end) She's the show's lead, and in the first song we witness her murder her boyfriend (and in the second, her husband takes the blame until he discovers they knew the victim; that's why she's in jail in the first place). After managing to get the reputable Billy Flynn, known for acquitting guilty women (through sly tactics, as we see here), they meet the press in order to start building Roxie's innocent persona on which to build her case. Roxie Hart explains in a monologue how she loves vaudeville, and always wanted to be in a vaudeville act; that's why the songs are very vaudeville-esque; this isn't the real events, it's Roxie's imagining of them. This is much clearer in the movie version, where they can switch between real life and the show Roxie and Billy are making of a case. This song obviously uses ventriloquism, and it's symbolic to Billy feeding Roxie answers before the conference/him talking on behalf of her. She's a puppet to be molded into a housewife who regrets her actions. Just in case someone doesn't know, the ensemble joining in at the end is the indication that they're feeding into it; the scene directly after this is reporters shouting headlines that declare her purity (leading into Roxie, which I would love to see from this woman) Billy-as-Roxie speaks about love at first sight with her husband, cheating on him with the victim, him trying to shoot her; as she grapples with him, the gun falls and she reaches it first, shooting in self defense. This is all lies, in All That Jazz she sneaks up on him with the gun. tl;dr the lead, Roxie, has her first press conference where she feeds a cover story about the murder of her boyfriend. the ventriloquism acts as symbolism to how her lawyer, Billy, has fed her these answers and/or speaks for her
This is an absolutely incredible performance for everyone. Of course the actor's ventriloquism is off the charts - you literally cannot see his mouth even TWITCH during some of his lines, without losing any of his clarity or singing ability, which is already leagues ahead of every other Flynn I've seen. And Roxie's performance is spot on as well. I loved all her little movements and choreography, and the bit at the end where she gets so excited seeing all the reporters repeating their story was such a humanizing choice! I also loved her little applause while Billy's actor was belting out that second to last note. Really incomparable stuff
POV: you clicked a recommended by RU-vid and you don't speak a word of this language but you are a huge Chicago fan so you already know by heart what's happening
Here's a link to what I think is a rehearsal for the number (with what seems to be the same cast except Roxie is played by Tiffany Young): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xJItYHsePqU.html There didn't seem to be a Mary Sunshine in the video either, but still, the song works.
Wow! In the short moments where Roxie was being herself the actress really managed to make her personality shine through! And that vetriloquism was amazing!!
I think my favorite part of this is that as he belts out that final long note, you can see ALL THE DANCERS BEHIND HIM STARTING TO BUCKLE, because he's able to keep the note so long.
Love this rendition so much, I keep coming back to it. One of my favorite bits is how Roxie slowly wakes up at the end to the fact that the reporters are buying Flynn's story, and she gets more and more excited, because: it worked! Just great attention to detail, telling small stories just with looks, amazing
Korean casts are on another level. Still to this day the best versions of Wicked, Phantom, The Lion King, Jekyll & Hyde, and Spring Awakening that I've seen were in Seoul. Only show that ever disappointed was Miss Saigon, but I think that was a casting issue. This channel is everything, and this performance is HEAVEN. Choi Jae Rim is DREAM ZADDY!
As neat as it is, I think it works without it. I think the point of the scene is that everyone knows it's all a load of croc that Billy cooked up coming out of Roxie's mouth, but don't care because it's all about the spectacle for them anyway. The truth doesn't sell papers, but the old Razzle Dazzle does.
the fact that he can hold a note for that long, take a full breath almost silently, and then do it again, all while casually adjusting his cufflinks has me obsessed
There's a Korean version of almost every major musical, even shows like Fun Home and Next to Normal. I can honestly say that some of the best casts I've ever seen have been Korean.
It’s so neat to see this song re-written in Korean- but it still flows and rhymes just as well as the original!! (Not to mention, the dancing is incredible.) So cool!
