Hiking with a teen can be hard. Some of my trail magic was when other hikers helped explain and motivate them. The trail is so different from normal life at home. It takes alot of adjustment for all. I have hiked many trails and found letting my teen be the leader/making decisions helped them feel empowered. Having his own tent is great, he will figure it out. Sometimes they have to get wet and cold to understand. I have been wet and cold myself. Hiking in rain is always hard. You have good tents and your gear looks good. Having a good absorbent rag to dry it off the tent with helps. How the tent is pitched and correct use of the ground fly, makes a big difference. Use a pack cover and plastic bags inside the pack. Remember never quit on a bad day. You both will have so many stories to tell your husband and family back home. Just think of the quality time you are having with your son. Best hike ever. Hike On.
No giving up, this will make you two stronger. You guys got this. Me and my son have been following you guys and we would love to see you two make it to the end. Stay strong Levi this will make you the man you need to be and your mom needs.
I would pick up pack covers. I know some of these packs claim to be waterproof, but water finds a way. I would also recommend using the umbrella when you can...it not only gives your head a reprieve from the rain, it covers the top of your pack as well. When on trail, and you put up your tent when wet, take it out when you take a lunch break at a shelter and hang it up while you eat and break...it’s just part of it really. As for the compactor bags...I used a hair tie to secure the top. As it warms up and the rain continues, you will get used to it...trust me. Lol
I mentioned using the trekking poles to massage but I can’t do that at night when my trekking poles are holding my tent up so I use the stake. I haven’t had a wet bag yet either. I also use the compactor bag. Unfortunately I’m not sure Levi folded his well so his stuff got a little bit wet. Thanks
