Hi Stuart. I have made some changes to your project. I have put LineageOS 19 (Android 12L) as the operating system, Sound Blaster g3 sound card (the sound has improved a lot due to the auxiliary input, in addition to all the audio modifications that can be made). And as home screen: Agama car launcher, along with: Guru Car launcher. And independent GPS U-blox7 connected directly to the Raspberry. In addition to the Autokit connection with Carplay and Android Auto. The result has left me satisfied. Greetings.
Very interesting. I may have to make a video on this. I've currently been trialling an actual Android box (instead of a Pi) because it has GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi and all the toys already installed, although it's a tad on the slow side. How quick is the Pi running Android?
@@SaabUnleashed With Spotify and Waze or any other App, the answer is immediate (But the micro sd has to be fast) At no time do you feel that Android is running on a Raspberry Pi
I finally scored a used ICM3, and I plan to tackle this mod before long. Thank you so much for putting all this together! I also like Leo fernandez fandiño's suggested improvements and will probably give them a try. I'm also thinking I may try to figure out how to wire into the car's existing microphone, rather than adding a new visibly protruding one.
Hi Stuart, I’m reading through these comments and I was wondering, do you think you could make a short video, possible with a list of parts, for a potentially updated conversion so that we could source the parts ourselves for this amazing conversion you made widely known? Would be a massive help to see if anything is updated before I jump into this.
@@Manuelooo Its quite hard to make a specific list. I have made a couple of these units. Theres always something wrong, with at least one of the parts. You can easily find a general parts list on the OpenAutoPro forum. You have to make a lot of research yourself :)
Simple as that! Yes indeed 😆 I’d love to fit to my 9-3. But it’s a little too involved for my basic skill set unfortunately. Great instructional vid tho!
Hi mate, this is an awesome job! I've done it and it's working 90% perfect, thank you very much! I still need to make a case for the components (they are in the glovebox, but it's a mess), install a delayed relay to keep the raspberry pi on for 1-2 minutes after I turn off the ignition and install a power/reset button. My only concern is that I find the screen too dark, during daytime it's extremely hard to see it (during the night is perfect). I've checked brightness options in openauto pro and the brightness is set at 100% (but I can't regulate it, I'm not sure if there is any other option to control the brightness or this is normal) Thank you for your help! Now I'm always listening Spotify in the car!
Really great work Stuart ! Do we place the screen as you said on bottom left , so the power cable of the monitor can pass or is it any other reason aswell ?
great explanation. However I have seen that the Open Auto Pro software comes online for an SD card. where do i get the cable kit and raspberry pi board? Thank you
Sir, I am driving a SAAB 93 convertible in Korea. I happened to see your video. I am using ICM3. Is there a way to purchase the kit you made? I'm always worried because Apple Car Play doesn't work.
Great work! Very nice Stuart 👍👍. I have a question though: I might be wrong but I think that some links to the items you need to put together are outdated? Could you perhaps tell us how to bench test the system so that you can test at least the video?
Incredible yes, but I' ve been stubborn, thought to do it myself, not reading all your comments and bought obviously the wrong screen, the AMOLED. Could you please give a link to a better 5.5 screen. Further, I see all the touch screens have 3 connectors: power, video and touch. As you dont connect to the power connector, do I understand it in the right way that the touch connector also delivers power to the screen?
Hello, first of all thanx for this great video. I own a Saab with ICM3 which has even navigation from factory. So my question is: if I install your system I will lose my factory navigation, right? Since I will replace the original screen with your screen am guessing that will happen. Anyway, thank you once again for this great video. Best regards to you.
Hi Stuart, I just became the proud owner of a 2005 Saab 9-3 convertible and I am exploring option to improve the Multimedia solutions. Pricing details don't seem to be in the video (anymore) or it simply does not show here. It would be great if you can share here. thanks
Hello, amazing job on this modification! You really saved pre-facelift owners. One question: can this work for ICM2 units? If not, what would be needed to upgrade ICM2 to ICM3? (Besides the ICM3 itself).
Generally speaking, ICM3s are plug and play, but it depends on the features of your car. For example, if you have reverse sensors, but the car you took the ICM3 from did not, then you will no longer work unless you switch them back on using a Tech2. If you check my channel, you will see I have ICM2 mods
For anyone wondering where you can get the aux cable that goes into the EHU, it would seem the opel zafira aux cable is identical, so i'm going to try that for my build. It was the last missing piece, i haven't been able to reach Stu about his cables.
I have a 2003 Saab 9-3 and I would love to get the kit to turn my icm3 into apple/android car play…where do I get everything I need to make this possible in my car or do I send my radio to in order for them to do the same?
Hi Stuart, I got the whole set as listed about 1,5 - 2years ago. Had to pause the project for numerous reasons. But now want to finish it. I have not yet assembled it but connected all parts and used a telephone adapter as power supply. It works although I get a warning for low voltage. I have a few questions: How do I get that need Saab logo on my start-up screen? How do I update the OpenAuto-Pro 13.2 software? The Raspberry Pi does not seem to find my CarPlay dongle. Is there something I’m not seeing? Looking forward to your solutions 😊
Sounds like you have some incompatible parts. The power supply isn't meeting the 3amps the Pi needs, sounds like you're also using an incompatible Carplay adaptor. You need to do a few Linux commands in the terminal for the logo, Bluewave will support you with that on their forums
Thank you so much for you answer.. Okay. I got rid of the low voltage by using heavier cables. I also got a new CarPlay dongle (Carlinkit) but it is still not recognised by Pi. Even when wired to my iPhone. But it does appear in the Bluetooth list on my phone. Am I doing something wrong? Also do I need to update Auto Pro? Please advise?
Hi Stuart. Brilliant mate. Can I just clarify, does this render the radio/multi-CD/inbuilt phone/AUX inoperative? Does it mean all the ICM3 buttons and steering wheel ICM3 controls are therefore redundant? Is there any way to retain FM & CD functionality? Nav & Phone functionality are replaced of course, but is the intention to use the Pie for DAB somehow, & to just stream music via Spotify or whatever? I’m in Northampton BTW…
Martin, the full functionality of the original systems remain. The ICM3 itself is still intact, we've just removed the screen. CD player, radio, steering controls ect all still work. This unit works through the aux-in of the stock system, so you will lose the Aux socket - but you shouldn't need it any more anyway.
@@SaabUnleashed Cheers Stuart. So the display doesn't work for the ICM3, but sound does. Controlling the CD/FM would be interesting (with no display), but I guess we have the SID..? Assume that still works fine? Guess we just select AUX to get Pie sound, otherwise that's lost?
@@MartinDBaker yes the radio stations and Cd tracks show on the SID so you can still see everything. The only thing that would be interesting is changing the balance and fade
Hi Stuart, I ordered the screen from your link and it displays upside down, I have rotated the image but I am having trouble rotating the the touchscreen do you have any advice that would help please. Thanks
i did everything in the vid, i pair my phone to open-autopro but i don't see the car link bluetooth. do you need to install apk or something to get it to work?
I assembled this project in my ICM3 with screen you have proposed. How did you configurate the brightness control? Because with this screen I can not decrease the brightness in Open Auto pro
where can i order all the supporting modifications, i dont have any of the other adapters. only the screen and open auto pro programming. please let me know as ive looked everywhere
Hello! I have an ICM 2 as an original head unit on my 9-3 I just found an icm 3,on a good shape and even better price and I just bought it. I wonder if I"m going to loose any features of my vehicle by upgrading from icm2 to icm 3 Is the parking assistant going to be still available, after the update? Am I going to be able to use the steering wheal buttons after the upgrade? Are there any disadvantages by updating from icm2 to icm3? Thank you so much in advance, have a wonderful 2023
With regards to the parking assistance, it depends if the donor car had this feature. If not, it won't work, but it can easily be switched back on with a Tech2. You won't lose anything, but obviously the navigation ect won't work because you don't have the other required components. It would be a good candidate for the modification upgrade
@@SaabUnleashed thank you so much for the immediate response. After the upgrade am I still going to be able to use your kit? On other videos you have updated,I noticed that in order to "bring" the sound from the new kit, you have to switch the "disc" to auxiliary. But on my factory settings on icm2,I have no auxiliary option. (only disc(cd) and radio) I wonder, if it is possible to use your kit though with my new icm3 and how can I skip the auxiliary thing. Thanks again, in advance!
@@SaabUnleashed Thank you so much again!I need to mention that u do amazing job here .I never knew that this could be possible. Thanks for all this fantastic information you share with us! The job you have done is really tremendous for any Saab owner
I wanna build something like this but for the 07 plus facelift dash. I know there’s many double dins out there. But I want the most factory looking deck I can get. And now seeing this I know it’s possible.
@@SaabUnleashed there really isn’t though. Everything is so flashy and just not tasteful and everything I like is too big for the car. I had an sphda120 hated that it had no volume or tuning knob and the touchscreen died 😆 but it atleast sounded solid.
@@SaabUnleashed if I were to attempt this with the 07+ nav unit, would the volume controls and everything still work? I would I have to program all that to work?
@@austinralf5150 think about it this way - if you just buy and install an aftermarket android unit directly, you will retain the wheel controls and gain loads of new features. So what you're looking at doing with this modification it's actually very simple in theory. Take the components out of both the stock head unit and the Android one, and swap them. Of course, the buttons on the front of the stock unit will just be for show after the conversion.
Hello. I have done following your steps the assembly and renovation of my icm3. Everything works perfectly. The only drawback is that it does not allow you to modify the volume. It's like it's stuck. Since you have done countless assemblies, I would appreciate your help on what could be the problem? Greetings and thanks.(Sorry for my english)
The volume is not moving up or down? What about with the steering wheel controls? I've never heard of that before. I'd check to see if you have pulled not put the ribbon cables back for the face of the ICM3, or if you have accidentally pulled the ribbons from inside the metal box
@@SaabUnleashed Thank you for answering so quickly. The volume is heard very low. It cannot be raised or lowered with the steering wheel controls, nor with the volume knob on the Icm3. It is as if the function has been blocked. I am going to verify that the cables are correctly placed, (also inside the metal box) Thanks for your help.
The configuration above is not stable in the navigation mode. Apple Carplay stops at the moment Google Maps or Iphone Maps screen is on. any suggestions for HDMI settings? (I use openauto pro release 16.0). The forum on Openauto Pro didn't bring me further
Hello! Wonderful job - I am preparing to build my own. Two questions though: 1. What happens when you simply turn the engine off? Does Raspberry instantaneously "die"? If yes, isn't that a problem? 2. How does it act while driving at night? I mean, is there a built-in sensor in the screen that will automatically dim it? The same actually applies for driving on a very sunny day - is it possible to see anything with this TFT screen?
Great questions. 1. Yes, the Pi dies the second the ignition power source is removed. It would be bad if it was running something that is constantly writing to the card, as it could cause corruption. As this is not the case, it is merely streaming remotely from your phone, it'll be fine. (And is fine, plenty of people are running it at this point) 2. There is no sensor I'm afraid, it won't automatically dim at night. The screen is visible during sunlight. There's a in-use video on my channel This is a basic custom job and you are free to add additional features to your own build should you want to
This really great stuff. The ICM 3 in my 2005 9-3 Convertible has more and more issues - the "normal" state is now that it doesn't start up but ends up in an endless restart loop :-( Has anyone recently implemented this interesting modification? I struggle to find the "shopping list" - have mailed Stu couple of times but never received a response so far.
Unfortunately Wisecoco, manufacturer of this screen has replaced the LCD version with OLED and they don't sell them anymore. Is there any particular reason not to use OLED screen? Why won't it work?
The new OLED screen is fine. The old on used to display only in portrait mode unless you programmed it to re-orient to landscape mode. The new one defaults to landscape and has the connections in exactly the samee place, so it's fine to use
@@SaabUnleashed thanks a lot for prompt answer. I will finally be attempting to make this mod for my Saab. All the best to you Stuart, you're doing an amazing work!
Hello I just found openAuto and by additional seaching including SAAB I found your project. I was dreaming of something like this but never thought it would be possible. I have a 9-3 SC from 2006, but I think I have to find out it it has the ICM3 unit. (it looks equal). Working through your list I found that the display is currently not available. Ist there any alternative?
@@SaabUnleashed Thanks for the swift reply. I noticed that you did not use any form of heat control for the Pi. Many starter kits do mention/ use heatsinks or vents. What is your take on this?
@@SaabUnleashed Got it! You also remove the high voltage wires that provide power for the fibre optics. Does this not interfere with the car's performance (e.g. not starting and such)?
@@r.r.visser4156 they're nothing to do with the fibre optics, they powered the mini florescent tubes that lit up the screen. And obviously this mod doesn't impact the ability to start the car, it has been implimented by many at this point
Hi Stuart, i am from US where can I order your kit that includes the icm3 unit itself? So basically when you turn on the car when you just use only the radio you only rely the details on the sid above dashboard? Addon Backup camera and dashcam would be excellent.
I can't supply the ICM3 I'm afraid. You would have to acquire one. The system is compatible with a backup camera but one doesn't currently exist, I'm actually looking into that
Hello! I would like to complete a build like this. The links to the items on eBay do not appear to work. I tried to reach out through your email but that did not seem to go through. Would you have anywhere to point me? Any help is appreciated.
I have an aux cable. I want to replace it to be sure the sounds quality does not have noise. How would I get one from you? And how do you download open auto properly so the raspberry pi functions correctly?
There are instructions in their site (BlueWave) for that. You just download one application and the bin file and you run the application point to the bin file it it creates a bootable microSD.
ICM3 navigation units were only available between 2003-2006. And as this is a kit to modify a unit you already have, there is no substitution so no programming is required.
After some hours of searching and viewing, there are addon boards that you can get with "Auto on & Safe shutdown" features. Some use lithium batteries and other a direct connection to the battery.
Can this be made with rock pi 4, or some alternative ? So hard to get sn raspberry pi atm, and didnt find anyone doing android auto systems with something else than raspberry pi 3 or 4. Any ideas ?
I try to use a 5.0 bluetooth dongle. I can not make the connection between the phone and the Rpi via bluetooth. It is due to the 5.0 dongle or is the something else?
Use the specific dongle that I listed. I can't be sure on the compatibility of all dongles. Alternatively, you can ask the question on the bluewave forum
changed to 4.0, S A71, Huawei manage to see each other, but without pairing (couldn't pair). S10 not even manage to connect. by type C cable everything is ok, except phone call. additionally, i do not manage to connect the raspberry to wifi
