Keen to leverage its sensational V-4 powerhouse, Ducati overhauls its 2021 Multistrada V4 S ($24,095-$24,695 as tested) adventure-touring bike. Fitted with an all-new powertrain, chassis, and electronics package (with radar-equipped adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection), Ducati aims to not only improve the versatility of this four-generation Multistrada, but to enhance comfort and riding thrill with its now signature hotrod style.
--
Swing a leg over the Multi and remains a sizable ADV rig Still, the ergonomics are well proportioned and eerily similar to a current generation globe trotting Boxer Twin. A broad forward fairing and manual-adjustable windscreen provide good coverage against elements and the seat is nice and cozy. Our S model was equipped with heated grips and rider and passenger seats.
A larger displacement 1,158cc V-4 purrs in a way that the previous L-Twin never did. And with its 2mm wider cylinder bore compared to the Panigale V4 superbike, it delivers pleasing torque at lower rpms. Still, because it’s a modern Ducati, the engine loves to scream and is a hoot to ride with the throttle wrapped to the stop. But it’s fun-loving pedigree has a price, with the Multi recording an paltry 30-mpg average.
The Multistrada is the first Ducati to employ a conventional, non-desmo valvetrain. This boosts valve adjustment intervals from 18,000 miles to a whopping 37,280 miles. On a side note, this mileage interval is well above German and Japanese-made ADV rigs in this segment. After initial 600-mile service, the V-4 engine goes 9,000 miles between scheduled oil and filter changes, just like the previous L-Twin version.
Combined adjustable engine power and throttle maps allow the engine to go from mild to wild with a push of a button. Traction and wheelie control, as well as multi-mode ABS are also included. Our S-model also includes semi-active suspension damping adjustment that is light years ahead of the electronics unveiled on the second generation Multistrada.
Keeping tabs on everything is a larger and more crisp-looking 6.5-inch color TFT display, (again, an identical size as the Motorrad setup). The display is a big improvement versus previous iterations and is generally easy to read while riding. However, menu navigation remains clunky and it’s easy to get lost within sub-menus. Ducati could do well by simplifying the menu and engineering the software intuitiveness of a modern smartphone.
Despite fitting a larger diameter 19-inch front wheel, the Multistrada still handles like a dream on pavement. Although it weighs 530-some pounds with 5.8-gallons of fuel, in motion it offers sportbike-like agility. On road handling is again, eerily close to the Motorrad division’s XR bike… which is a good thing.
Added ground clearance and more intuitive ergonomics make it easier to ride the Multi like a dirt bike. Squeezing the machine in the standing position is more dirt bike-like and the suspension is most certainly better equipped for riding in the rough stuff. While excellent on road, the radial front brake master cylinder is a tad too touchy over slick terrain. Another strike is the puny rider footpegs which build pressure on the soles of the feet when standing. Lastly, the hydraulic-actuated clutch lever could also allow more inward adjustment as it can be hard to reach during delicate maneuvers.
Smoother and more fun, today’s Multistrada V4 S is a significant improvement of the bike of old. Not only is it more entertaining, it offers a refined level of touring and off-road competency. Consider its enhanced durability and advanced gizmos, including one-of-a-kind adaptive cruise control and there is a lot to love about this new Ducati.

I've done several thousand miles on this bike so far touring across the country. I also occasionally take it a some gravel roads when going up the mountains near by. It is an amazing machine. Really really capable. Everyone who complains about its price. Well. Let's talk about it. If you are on a market for a naked bike, a good one would cost you around 16 - 17 k. And this won't be the most expensive one. And it would only be good for a paved road riding. Without saddle bags, without useful windshield, without butt and grips heaters... So, add all that to it, plus light offroad capabilities, plus extremely comfortable riding experience and here you are -- riding a Ferrari of motorcycles for less than 25 k.

Hey Adam..., major props for speaking about the bike while pushing that 530 lb. beast through the sand. I know what that feels like. that was impressive. Also, nice save! lol Nice bike but.... Too heavy for me. KTM 690 Enduro R is what floats my boat.
@hoodooguru5217
@hoodooguru5217 3 года назад
Adam: would love to get an accurate & real weight of this V4S. You cited 530lbs with a full tank, but that doesn’t seem to align with many other citations of its weight which seem closer to 570-580lbs wet. Did you get that weight spec from Ducati PR? Would you guys be able to weigh this once it’s in your office?
@NovaPtl
@NovaPtl 3 года назад
So yur sayin ducati gives 22kg less wet weight in their spec sheets? Is that even possible
@hoodooguru5217
@hoodooguru5217 3 года назад
@@NovaPtl yes. Every manufacturer seems to under-spec the true weight of the bike. Go back and look at specs of previous models (for Ducati, BMW, others) vs what the reviewers cite when actually weighed on a scale. My bet is this Ducati Multistrada V4S weighs 20-30 lbs more than what Adam was citing in his review. There are other video reviews of this bike (from Europe) which cite this bike weighing closer to 580lbs.

Is it me or are Ducati's getting insanely expensive. I'd love to have that Streetfighter S, but damn it's priced about $4-5 higher than the competition from Aprilia and KTM. Can't see how it's justified, other than it's quite a healthy Ducati tax. Now this Multistrada is in that same price range. Awesome bikes, but Ducati seems to be trying to make their bikes seem like the ultra premium brand now with these crazy prices.

Thanks good review, I have a KTM 1090R that is set up for hard core off road by it's first owner - me - I'm less adventurous but it is a great motorcycle as a compromise on road bike. I am thinking of the Ducati but with the spokes and engine bars for some off road riding. Either that of the newish KTM 1290 Adventure R, but I think the Duke might suit my needs better - that is - not hard technical off road stuff, longer B road pavement rides, like all day, day after day - and then mostly maintained dirt roads.

Stupidest Riding impression ever. I own Ducati V2 Multistradas and I've never wanted to take them off pavement, except maybe on a graded dirt road. I use mine as intended for cross county touring, canyon and mountain road bashing and city commuting in rush hour traffic. If anyone wants a lightweight dual purpose bike, of course they'd get a 100lb ligher 2-cylinder KTM 890 Adventure or a Honda Trans Alp 700, not a 4-cylinder 1100cc Ducati MotoGP derived "Enduro" road bike. Ducati North America screwed the pouch in letting these Journalists even test this stupid knobby tired off-road version in the desert. Take a Multistrada V4S with solid wheels and sportbike tires up the California Coast or through the Swiss Alps and the only bike that can rival it is BMW's also Superbike based 4-cylinder S1000 XR.
