Blame an OP ability if you like, the reality is that Trap has unbelievably strong micro, macro, and strategy, and that is why he was able to take this match over Maru. Try to imagine Sos instead of Trap in this series. Despite Sos having access to shield battery you know Maru would still whoop his ass.
Spoiler buffer I really admire Maru's resilience, he never gives up and it always feels that he could win. Trap played brilliantly overall , but I feel that Maru was not at his best, this siege without tanks in the second game did not really feel good. Also I really would like to see more liberators with range upgrade in late game TvP. This is what Cure did in the previous round and it felt really interesting.
I agree that Maru did not feel at his best. He dropped a lot of little micro things and engagements that it feels like he wouldn't have had problems with in the past.
The problem with Maru TvP playstyle is that, he went too much on early harrassment. Against a guy like Trap, who get close to perfect micro and defend, doing mine drop or helion runby is just not gonna work. Maru put himself behind in every game because of that and had to climb out of the hole he digged himself. If you want HM play TvP, he doesnt care about harrassment, but went straight up for unit production, shitload of them. And when they hit critical mass, he just push and get things done. Thats how HM beat Trap 2-0, and Maru should really be watching how it is done. And that attack into overcharge battery in game 2 was simply insane, there was no reason for doing that because Maru caught up in worker count, and could have went for base 4, he just took a terrible fight.
@@tigera6 very interesting statement. I wonder if Cure more aggressive pressure style will do better. Given he would not necessarily be losing units for nothing and forcing trap to respect bio pressure early on. I am eager to see the match. And yes I feeling the attack into the overcharged battery was really such an uphill fight.
Finally a good take in the comments, agreed with better composition and better fights/decisions Maru could have possibly won the series. Thanks for not blindly saying ToSs oP!1!!1. Bashing a bunch of bio without tanks or liberators for staying power is a horrible idea. You need those 2 units for pushing the toss into a bad angle, of course you're going to get melted.
I feel so bad for trap. Back then he didn't play so well so he rarely won championships in premier tournaments. Now that he's basically the greatest protoss player and one of the best starcraft players in the world, he doesn't get the credit and respect like Maru does, despite beating him.
its about winning, nobody really care if you beat the other top players but still fail to win the top tier championship. And Trap wasnt doing great in any of the biggest tournament like IEM/WCS/WESG where prestige and prize money really count.
@@tigera6 lol. You do realize your initial statement says, "it's about winning." Yet, trap has recently won against maru. Trap won 3 premier tournaments in less than a month. It would've been 4 total if you count December 2020. He just started too become really good WAY after they closed down the WCS. And if you tallied Trap's games vs Maru, it's 36-34.
@@Anthonyomni888 Its not entirely about head to head, and Trap has already been having good record vs Maru since 2019, its nothing new. Its about winning CHAMPIONSHIP, espeically the big tournament. Like winning Super Tournament and similar smaller tournament is cool and all, but you know Trap is probably not even top 10 in career earning right? That because he doesnt play up to his potential in mega tournament.
@@Anthonyomni888 Not all premiere tournament are the same, WESG/WCS/IEM has much more money and prestige, players are likely focused to play better there. The 5 tournaments that Trap won, their total prize money could even match ONE of the above event. And when Trap got the chance to show his skill on the biggest stage, he kept laying eggs. Just checked his record on those tournaments, its not so pretty.
Toss has no weaknesses vs Terran. And has An array of aggressive openers and cheeses that work really well. That triple oracle where he sniped stim is a perfect example of that. This match is so unbalanced. From the second the game starts Terran has to worry about 374757 different builds and early attacks that can kill you or do GG damage if you aren’t prepared. It’s ridiculous.
Never put your upgrades in the edge of your base. Idk how many times blink stalkers need to come in and snipe tech labs for terrans to realize it's not worth the risk to... do what even? Hide that your marine marauder army is teaching into stim?
You know it! If you watch the next T Cure he literally cheeses/SCV Bumrushes 3 of the 4 games he plays vs. Parting. TvP can't be won if it's "fair" you basically have to cheese and pray for the best.
@@TheSanders999 right ppl be like "don't attack" and then when toss makes it into the late game they say "well you let them get there by not attacking" lmao just keep having ur cake and eating it too bucko
@@justinjtv4089 yeah so pre battery Terrans would stim into a toss army early game and win the game most of the time. Did you forget Maru won 4 GSL in a row and TY won 2 in a row? Sounds like you forgot that part or weren't playing sc2 then. Maru played a bad series, see what cure did to parting? Keep telling yourself you lose to toss because they're op though without learning how to deal with their army comps
@@TheSanders999 been playing since release. Masters with all 3 races on NA and EU. I recall it I just recall them winning bc the other players messed up more/bigger nit just bc they had mistakes yet still won.. both players had mistakes maru and TY just didn't make the fatal mistake of their opponents. Don't be some daft sweetie
Trap brought the steak. No question about it. Trap has been the best so far at not taking the big fights until he's sure of victory. His splitting to deal with the three pronged attack in game 2 is a very rare level of control.
@@genghiskhanschubbycheeks2170 welp well agree to disagree 😊 bc I think they're grossly op imagine not having to spend gas to heal gas units.. maybe they should make repair not cost any gas anymore 🤔
@@justinjtv4089 also im a Terran play and I do find them frustrating but if you wait them out like Maru did you can still take a good engagement. I honestly want to call them OP but I'm just trying to get gud
Looks to me like 2 evenly skilled players but one player on a much better race. Maru should maybe have tried cloak banshees or mech though. Maru 2 bases bio pushes were very nice though. I did still like Trap but I'm just sad to see Maru go out.
Look @ Cure's next games vs. Parting. He bumrushes with SCVs or pulls all in cheeses. He's smart, realized terran vs. Protoss = Cheese like hell otherwise you just get wrecked by protoss deathball while they sit back and use infinite health shield battery.
@@abouttime2569 I see. You must be right. I just didn't expect to see a protoss player helping a terran player, rather expecting a player of the same race to do it instead. It was almost like when two masters don't tend to reveal their secret techniques to their peers. Come to think of it, I recall a similar incident in the same tournament, when Parting defeated ByuN and Bunny was sitting just beside him all along.
@@siavashrohani1604 all of the GSL players know each other personally and many are friends with each other as about the same 30 players keep qualifying for GSL for the past several years. There are 4 on stage computers and each of the players who are going to play that day just sits there. So i am assuming parting was sitting next to maru that day. So they just naturally talked after each match i guess.
Nothing like watching people whinge that X good player didn't beat the measurably best Protoss in the world in a specific tournament, when their actual total match stats shows it closer over the average of their careers
Insane isn't it lmao, let's just completely forget Maru won 4 GSL in a row, and TY winning 2 while Protoss couldn't win anything before Trap. No no.. it's the race that's imba! Not Trap being an absolute monster.
I believe we won't do better when going through things easily but through failures. if Maru hasn't retired, he will Improve for sure and he will come back.
He just chose the wrong style against Trap, who actually micro as good if not even better than Maru at this stage. Maru should play with more power push like how Inno used to do, or like how HM is playing TvP. He seems to be too cute with just mine drop - helion runby every game, and that normally fails against guys like Trap, and put Maru in that big hole early game.
Man, why do I even read comments when it comes to StarCraft games? It's always Terrans balance whining even when Protoss hasn't won a premier tournament in ages (well, except for Trap).
don't worry about it. if you think terran is imba play terran. if you think protoss is imba play toss. toss is easier to play imo. terran is more fun. thats my opinion. play the race you think is best if you're gonna whine.
Yup Protoss is the weakest race. And hardest to master. Most expensive units. Hardest to rebuild. Most fragile air. And yet Trap showed them. He showed them real good, but he still doesn't get respect.
One those units that is good on paper and always gets hyped by the casters, but fights are usually messy and Protoss can play around them one way or the other.
My favorite part was Maru smirking after his win in game 1; followed by no more smirking as he lost every single game after that. Man I really miss watching IdrA getting stomped after trash talking then rage quitting.
zerg beats toss, toss beats teran, and terran can beat zerg. balanced. Maru should learn zerg and switch when playing vs nwbtoss. disruptor stalker just DOMINATES.
I agree esp the part terran CAN beat zerg, feel like terran should have more equal upper hand in that match up (talking about ZvT) just like the other two races have
I KNOW, I was screaming at the screen when Maru keep doing this mine drop shit over and over only to do nothing and lost all the mines along with the medivac. Maru just dig himself a big hole every time he does that against Trap, who know Maru playstyle so well and always go for the counter build against that, which is Blink Stalker with early Robo or Oracle. If Maru could play more like HM in TvP, he would be much better off against Trap. Just making unit like crazy, defend at home till you reach critical mass of Bio, then push into the Protoss 3rd. HM beat Trap 2-0 by doing exactly just that yesterday.
Traps success is only due to absence of Hero and Stats. Starcraft is dying the older these players get. Top level seems to have capped out. seems like they have "almost barely enough" to be entertaining
What a bad take, Trap has surpassed both of those players and is better than they ever were. Way to take away from Traps incredible improvement to the best Toss in the world.
Protoss is so fucking imba holy shit Literally nothing maru can do game 3 at all vs that ......... why an invisible unit needs blink that ONE shots shit .. doesnt even give u time to react its so corny how they ruined this game
Wonder why people feel the need to disrespect Trap. He is an awesome player and has superb map vision and decision making. He shut down Marus harrass attempts often enough (besides game 1, which he then lost). But I mean: rewatch game 3 for example! He dodges the mines and kills off the mine drops on the retaliation, while Maru has the audacity to try to siege gim without even having tanks. Maru did not only not play twice as good, he didn't play better than Trap at all.
@@testthewest123 The thing is it doesnt take any skill to go 3 raxx into blink and stop a drop. Trap failed HARD first game and it was the only reason Maru could win one single game. Protoss are ez A move race. Best Splashdmg, best static D, best lategame units, tankiest tier 1 units, best invis unit.
@@antoniocamargo6580 I am not your bro. And yes, every terran, zerg and protoss always complains that they are underpowered - since decades. So what's new? And also yes, if you want to win, you have to be better. Your mine drops actually have to do something and you can't just build Marines and Medivacs and be mad if you lose to high tech units - which is what most terrans do. Maru is better the that, but he wasn't good enough today.
@@SsSHardt And how much skill exactly do you need, to load up a medivac full of mines and send them over? Right, not more then defending it without losses. And if Protoss actually had such an edge, our skilled korean players would have figured that out by now (it is years since anything substantially changed) and gone on a winning spree - which they haven't. Let's face the facts: You are either a sad Maru-fanboy, or a terran player that thinks himself better then he actually is. But since you are so uneducated, let me help you and tell you some advantages of terran: Highest single target dps (that automatically hits and hasn't to be targeted like storm or disruptors and cannot be dodged), ability to heal wounded units or repair them, best dropship, best detection, mobile and static, MULES, in contrast to what you said: best static D inform of planetary fortresses, best antiair, longest range ground units. I don't say they, or any other race is imbalanced, but each have their strenght and you fail to see terrans.
@@BrilliantBravura I'm talking GREEN AIR still owning the scene. Maru must exciting Terran to watch. Trap, clearly best Protoss. Rogue, best Zerg in GSL. Cure is cool, don't get me wrong, and he's been strong lately. Yet, I can't get as hyped for a Cure game as a Maru game. Parting has fun cheeses and early game strats, but Trap is simply a lot better than him against T and Z.
For each build Terran goes, toss has 5 options to counter it while just needing 200 apm to do it! No wonder S2 is not half of S1 was... absolutley unbalanced races! Which is quiet revealing, if the updated game is more unbalanced than the old one of 20 years ago...
well maru was the one who won 4 tittles in the row and ty won two gsl in 2020 meanwhile protoss before trap didn't win any tournament for several years except gsl super tournament. btw maru and inno were able to beat top protoss even with charge that was with damage it's trap in his prime and maru in a bit of decline
@@schlechtgut8349 I agree with you that Maru was not the best for his performance last night. Quite a few sloppy or hesitate moves. He could have been much better.
@@schlechtgut8349 And he had to be above all by a mile to do so! Even in this games you can see, maru apm above 400 and Trap 150/250 apm, it shows that the must strongest race with so many options it's also not multitasking demanding! I mean, you can compare tanks in S1 and S2, in S2 they are usless, only toss can counter them with 2/3 ways... while goons a unit that hit terrain/air and has range still get a blink that counters tanks, Terran in s2 lost vultures and the mines in S2 doesn't have the same features and functionality and provide no defense to tanks! Both zero and Toss in s2 got new units that increased they strategies while Terran has bio, tanks that are easly countered and BCs...
@@schlechtgut8349 I dont think Maru is in decline, he just doesnt play with the right strategy. To be honest, I think Maru macro currently is even better than what he did in 2018 when he won those GSL title. The problem is, Maru stick too much into a certain style and doesnt want to mix it up against tough opponent. Against Trap, Maru does that mine drop build way too much even when Trap ALWAYS went for either Phoenix or Blink Stalker which completely counter Maru opener. Also, just look at that GSL final against Rogue, who clearly wanted to do the Roach all-in every game, and Maru couldnt defend it because he was doing standard build without any scouting.
