Next time you're out on a drive count how many HUGE cars you see with a single occupant inside. It's madness really, a car like this is all the personal transport most people need. Two adults and a couple of ankle snappers will be quite happy in it for most journeys.Small is beautiful.
I like older small cars but I absolutely hate modern small cars. I like the small space and gas mileage but the quality of the interior is always horrendous. Hard plastic this hard plastic that, hard suspension and hard seats, etc. Everything is so hard and uncomfortable in small cars and it seems like only the top of the line executive sedans ever have any semblance of ride comfort anymore. Good thing small cars were equally as comfortable as large ones 30 years ago, hence I still drive Peugeot 205s.
@@GlamStacheessnostalgialounge I agree. I wish we could have the styling and charcter of older cars with the reliability, economy and space of modern city cars.
@@JW20236 Eh I find older cars to be more reliable anyway. I mean they'll still break all the time, but so will any 5-10 year old modern car anyway, and older cars are so much easier to fix (assuming you can find the parts), and while modern small cars can get some pretty ridiculous economy, it's all thanks to overly complex computer management that only delays the inevitable obsolescence of the internal combustion engine, thanks to the lower weight of older cars, they still get pretty good economy with much simpler technology, and in regards to space...a 205 has loads more space than a brand new 208.
@@GlamStacheessnostalgialounge I actually meant older cars in terms of 60's and 70's but I have found 'modern' (post-2000) cars to be fairly reliable (engine-wise), its just the electrical stuff that seems to implode far too often. But yes, impossible to fix for the DIY mechanic. One thing modern cars can not beat at all is the character of pre-millenium vehicles. Not by a mile.
Hi mate. I live in Israel so we don’t get picanto with turbos 😢. I had a 2019 gt line which got stolen last week. I’m now looking at getting a 2023 gt line 1.2 liter automatic manual 5 speed transmission. Which I was surprised to see and even has cruise control I’m SOLD! waiting for my insurance to pay me and I’ll make my order. Are you saying your picanto had the same gear transmission box as my future new picanto?
Kia are getting so much nicer. The early Picanto was a pretty dull effort, this looks much better. Good size for town dwellers. You do not need a chuffing great truck thing.
Great little cars, I needed a cheap run-around and bought one of these. Never ever thought I'd buy a Kia, let alone one of these- but it's a cracking little motor. Biggest surprise is how well it handles, actually quite good fun.
Picking up this car tomorrow as my first car. Opted for the GT Line (not the turbo to save on insurance) with the smart pack. That adds in blind-spot detection and a few other safety features that appeal to me and should hopefully help fix the B post issue. Every review I watched before buying it had almost nothing but good things to say. Enjoyed yours too!
Kia's evolution has been incredible. From building old Mazdas in the early 90s to honing their own craft to class leading models today. The 7 year warranty was an absolute triumph and I bet now they have stolen lots of sales from Ford, Vauxhall, the French and the Italians, especially if Renault, Citroen and Fiat's sales are anything to go by. We had a load of Picantos on the local car club fleet back in 2012 and they held up really well over the 5 years they stayed. Very easy cars to recommend to people with confidence. I love that they've stuck with proper buttons, a key and a real handbrake too
I have been a Kia owner for many years now so I already know just how good their cars are. Hopefully some day you'll do a review of the mark 2 Rio CRDi, which I can safely say, is one of the best cars I've ever owned, and I used to be a Volvo driver. These small cars are completely transformed by fitting them with Avon ZT7 low noise tyres. Recently, one of my daughters borrowed my Rio for two weeks while her BMW Mini Cooper D was off the road waiting for a replacement headlight bulb, meanwhile I borrowed my Mate's Merc C220. I couldn't wait to get my own car back, because the driver's seat is more comfortable and because it has better lights and does 20 miles more on a gallon of diesel.
@@peterriggall8409 I remember when the main HID bulb burned out in my Honda Accord, I had to wait a week for a replacement which could only be installed by the dealer, it was hell :(
@@hunchanchoc8418 I just did a bit of research online. The ZT7s produce 68dB of noise which s about the lowest you get. Every 3dB lower is half, so 71dB is twice as loud as 68 and 74dB is 4x etc. Just like washing machines, tyres are rated for their characteristics 'A to E'. The Avons are not the most fuel efficient, being rated 'C', but have good grip in the wet 'B', and 'A' for (low) noise. Of course lower noise is not the only benefit from these tyres, they give a smoother ride too.
Great review as always, wife's friend has one of these and only issue she has had is a issue with the battery, the amount of times I have had to jump start it, but that's now been sorted with a new battery. She tried to carry a small chest of drawers in it and managed to smash the rear windscreen!!
I had a brand new Kia Cee'd estate car as a hire car in Denmark a year or so ago for a couple of weeks. Loved it. I was impressed by the build quality. It felt very well screwed together. A very pleasant and capable car.
We have a 2015 Picanto which is fantastic. It was one of the first in the range to be designed by the guy who designed the Audi TT. So impressed with KIA I have just taken delivery of my new Proceed Shooting Break.
I own the sister car, the i10, a 2019 model. They are great cars, well equipped, comfortable, reliable and cheap to run. About to trade up to a 2021 i10, my 6th i10 since 2008.
Ive got a previous version 2016 Kia Picanto Chilli (Equivalent of an xline in previous model). Bought it 3 years ago as a runabout and its a great little car. Has load of kit as standard including built in sat-nav etc, air con, power mirrors , auto lights and drives like a bigger car quality wise and has great mpg and great handling. 7 years warranty and servicing is reasonable as I buy the service packages. Only downsides are had to replace tyres (Hankook OEM) due to perishing when only 4 years old (still loads of tread on them but starting to perish ) and the stop start only works which the battery is fully charged which is rarely as the battery fitted is too small for a car with loads of kit. Never looked back since buying it and would buy another tomorrow.
The sat nav thing makes sense. There’’s a fair bit of RnD cost and it goes out of date quickly. At least relying on your phone means you’ll have up to date maps.
Agreed. Ford keeps trying to sell me a map update for my Fiesta ST for $150USD. Seems pretty silly when I can use my phone, and it’s updated constantly.
I expect the VW will still pip it to the post in the auto press reviews, they always do for some reason. For instance the i10 could seat three in the back, but the Up! was given five out of five for rear seating practicality, while only accomodating two people(go figure).
Motoring press reviews are biased towards certain brands. I expect they get freebies or something. I avoid all the so called popular car channels on here because they are usually negative about anything that isn’t German or expensive. Small cars reviewed on those sites tend to be patronising and insulting.
@@oddities-whatnot absolutely, the above was a case in point. How can a car that seats three in the back, loose out in terms of practicality, to one that only manages two? Ludicrous!
Those vertical air vents on the dashboard look like the front grille of an Edsel. Which apparently reminded people of an item of a lady’s anatomy back when the Edsel was launched.
The spare wheel well will take a full size or space saver. I bought the space saver and jack kit for £85 on ebay. Do not use the can of gunk, it will ruin the tyre pressure sensor (£160 to replace) as well as the tyre, and the rim will need specialist cleaning.
In Australia the top model is the GT with a 3cylinder 1.0ltr turbo engine that has a 5 speed manual gearbox, then comes the GT Line being a 4 cylinder manual or auto. all come with a spare tyre not inflator kit. also cruise control & 7 year unlimited klm warranty.
I noticed you mention those two "pretend" exhausts at the back. How times change ! Remember when Fiat's Mark 1 Punto had a hidden exhaust ? It was designed to be hidden behind the rear bumper.
A trend I predicted but never came to be. But then the trend seems to be for bigger radiator grilles. I wonder if it's consumer demand or something else leading the trend for 'agressive' cars.
I'm in Australia and bought this vehicle for my wife; GT Line and same colour as your demo but has a four speed automatic as she can't compute three pedals. It is a great little car.
I had the poverty spec one of these as a crash shop loan car recently. I was astonished by the ride quality and it’ was surprisingly well built too. It was a 4 speed automatic though which was absolutely hideous.
I drive this car now for 6 months now, my first small car and with private lease. Love it, it’s cute but looks aggressive, it’s light weight and with only 67HP im still faster pulling away then most cars. I have the white Colour with red lining
It amazes me how small cars nowadays look really roomy inside. I'm 6ft3" and I think I could nip around in this quite comfortably, although I'd hate to be sitting behind me 😂😂 Looks classy and sharp for the money. Would certainly have no buyers remorse with this on the driveway.
We've had a 2011 i10 for a year now, on one level pure white goods. On another, the South Korean firms have got 'an car' at excellent value down to something close to an art form. There's no fat on it at all.
Cant fault a Picanto, having owned two and the Warranty is as good as the build quality having used it twice, at 1 year and 6 years. GT Line is class but even the 1 Trim has all the build, handling, and stability. Quality Product.
It's a good little city car, just right for 4 adults and one or two bags of shopping or a couple of suitcases and fairly sizeable loads with the seats folded flat as long as they're not too big.
David stobbart OBC art & music & friends. Lack of a proper spare will cost you sales here in Australia particularly outside the major cities where distances between towns/services can be significant (I live in a major rural town in the most densely populated state, and the nearest equivalent or larger town is at least 200km in any direction).
@@Alexsmith2001 no the second generation ford ka was based on the fiat 500...the ford ka+ is a ford design and used the good old zetec 1.25, cracking engines
@@usuallyfixingtinkering "There is just one 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine, too, closely related to the 1.25-litre engine found in the Fiesta" then in late 2018 they gained the ford 3 cylinder 1.2 instead, neither of those were fiat engines......
My other half looked at these, I think they are a stylish little car and my favourite of the cars in this class. However we ended up going for an MG3 as you could get a the next class size up for the same money, which has been a great car. I think both Picanto and MG3 represent the best cars for the money in their respective class.
This was interesting to watch. 4 months ago I bought a 2018 Hyundai i10 1.2 and I have been impressed with it so far. I think I've been converted to Korean cars now.
I have the MK3 in 3 spec (automatic). This one being reviewed is the MK3.1. My Picanto 'city car' spends a lot of time on the motorway! I dont like the Gt/Line/X trims which are gaudy and detract. Vinyl seats - yuk. The 3 spec is the one you want. Sat nav, air con, radar emergency brake, DAB etc. Get a space saver spare wheel and jack kit for £85 on ebay etc. It is unfortunate that the Mk3.1 will be having a DCT gearbox and not a proper torque converter slush box. Note that reviewers quote the manufacturers MPG. Expect between 28 and 38 MPG.
The 3 only comes with the non-turbo 1 litre or 1.25 litre engines doesn't it? I already own a 2 with the 1.25 litre engine and I find it a little under powered, so the 1 litre must be puny. When I swap my Picanto 2 next year, I'm going for a 1litre turbo in GT line S trim, with climate control and heated seats and steering wheel. Two more features that aren't available on the 3, and a Boon in cold weather. My friend has a GT line with the turbo engine, and it's much nippier than my 1.25 and she manages 50 mpg quite easily.
I'm still trying to get my head around how it's OK to have what's essentially a big ugly tablet slapped in your view like that, that you can play with and be distracted by and mess about with menus on the move it seems dangerous, but have your phone on satnav and touch that and you get done for using your phone whist driving. (no I dont condone.) Other than that the car looks like it has a little more high quality that a hyundai i10 which is good. Working on a swift and early new minis I can say Im not keen on electronic steering at all!
A car you might never love but will almost certainly greatly admire. If you're not so shallow as to feel the need to impress (me unfort), this would be great as relatively cheap transport that avoids 2nd hand pitfalls and should see out the final 10 years or so of ICE (at least before values really disappear) nicely.
They must be marketing them differently here in Australia. All models here are the 1.25 litre 4 cylinder, including the GT Line. The only one that has the 1 litre turbo here is the GT. Interesting.
It would be really cool if in future modern reviews you gave a brief review of the sound quality of the car’s audio system. I don’t know any reviewers that ever discuss it, yet it’s one of my top 3 most important features of a car.
Two comments: 1. The swoopy looking headlights and front and rear end trim are all very well, but must be frighteningly expensive to replace in the event of accident damage. 2. The side dashboard vents bear, for me, a close resemblance to the radiator grill on an Edsel. That said, a very capable car and a fine video!
How about a tempest Speedo / rev counter? I can't decide whether grey Tetris would be 00s Toyota, or whether multi colour Tetris would be in a special edition mk 1 twingo.
I remember seeing an original Picanto and thinking it was the best car I had ever seen. To be fair, I was coming down from magic mushrooms and had just tried to count the uprights on the Armco whilst driving at 100mph.
Strange it idles at 1.000 rpm at the operating temperature. Also, loud and not a nice sounding engine. :/ OK, it is a 3 cylinder engine. Strange, they usually sound good when driven.
Small cars like that don't need a reversing camera...."if you can't park it, don't drive it" is my opinion to drivers that need assistance in such a small car.
It's not even really about "assistance" to me. More about convenience. I have an aygo which is even smaller than this, of course I could park it without the camera, but having it just adds that little edge of ease or more importantly, safety. It will be law for all cars to have these soon I reckon, it already is in America.
This would be a death trap with all the other vechiles on the road over on this side of the road. A full size crossover like a Highlander or Grand Cherokee hitting this wouldn't be pretty. But most Americans find cars this size unsafe or ugly and we got the room to have bigger cars. Not really any reason for a car this small. But that explains why we dont have it.
@@byronmills5952 All cars across all body styles were a lot smaller then and also people really didnt think about safety. The car consumer mindset has changed since then. You can see how popular sedans or 2 door cars use to be compared to now. Do you get what I mean? Consumer concerns and tastes are vastly different now.
Many US cars are oversized for other parts of the world. Some people import them over here, they are huge and dwarf local big cars. I don't even know how they can get a proper homologation to be honest.
Not sold it the North America it's too small for the average American sub-compact and compact car's are dying off in North America pick up truck and crossovers sells
I had a 2017 ceed for two months. Hated it with a passion, the more I drove it the worst it felt. Now drive a 21 plate Rio when I’m at work, awful car… uncomfortable, noisy, sloppy gear change , full of cheap plastic, no feeling of connection… feel so much better when I can go home in my utterly superior and utterly reliable 2015 Golf. Yes I know this is a Picanto but Kia is not for me.
