San Pedro Ranch 2021
Leopold Conservation Award Lone Star Land Steward
In the southwestern borderlands of Texas, the San Pedro Ranch has a rich history and ranching tradition, kept alive since 1932 by the Fitzsimons and Howard families. Today this 23,000 acre ranch is managed for cattle and a diverse wildlife population, in balance with a habitat that can be both harsh and delicate. On the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, drought is an expectation, so the San Pedro Ranch works to make the most of every raindrop. It’s is so refreshing to hear that ranchers are sharing their knowledge and stewardship skills. 🙏 What a blessing to Texas

This is a beautiful spot! Though I appreciate the conservation work and land stewardship of these private land owners, ideally I would love to see this ranch become a state park, state natural area, state wildlife management area or even a national wildlife refuge.

What do you mean by that? The ranches in the area are plagued with human trafficking. The Border Patrol is basically on these ranches in this area 24/7. This was long before the current president opened the doors wide open to trafficking. I haven't been on this ranch but, on the ranch next door that their brother owns.

How can I learn more about land conservation?

Talk to people that do that sort of thing. There are adult education courses that give out this information. I would go to feed stores and other places like that in small communities that will post this type of information in their stores when these classes are in the area. Also, contact your NRCS and FSA office in your county or adjacent county. I would assume the Texas Parks and Wildlife has information as well.
