I can save you a lot of time. Almost no one needs to upgrade from last year’s device to this year’s device, no matter what device we’re talking about. You might want to, but almost no one needs to.
Here’s how I see it. Have an iPad from 2017 or before? Upgrade. Have an iPad from 2018 or later? Wait until WWDC 2021. Then decide from there. Likely it won’t be worth an upgrade. I upgraded from the 9.7 iPad Pro and it’s worth it
my 11in 2020 is perfect. I just finally caved and purchased the apple folio cover and love it. After going through so many Amazon ones. I am not upgrading until I upgrade my phone again since I got the 12 pro max in Dec. My goal is to update when body changes happen only so I am safe for a while
I have actually been totally fine with not only keeping my 2020 12.9 model till at leasst next year, but I have also found myself very happy with my $20 generic bluetooth mobile keyboard and $99 smart-folio combo versus a magic keyboard. As an artist, I appreciate being able to position the keyboard relative to how I am painting in ProCreate and then just move it back when I want to be in "laptop" mode, and this keyboard actually has an escape button as well as the button to drop to the desktop. I have more and more Apple products, but I am still trying to be a realist when it comes to what I buy.
May I ask, what's the exact name of the keyboard you're using? The magic keyboard is reallyyy up there in price. Also! How is the screen size for your 12.9 tablet! I'm looking into getting one of the 2020s but not sure on which. (: I'm hoping to primarily use it for art and possibly basic video editing.
Excellent review. The iPads have always been snappy and the A12X (even A10X) are still plenty strong. I have an 11” M1 iPad Pro and the only caveat I would add is that the battery life is much improved on the new iPad. I’m happy I upgraded but I had the 10.5” iPad Pro so the new form factor with TouchID and new Apple Pencil is mostly what I love.
Same. I had the 10.5 and it's still performs relatively well. But the battery has dwindled over the years and this upgrade makes sense. My hope is that the M1 will just keep it snappy 5 years down the road.
@@JuanVinton , the A10-A12X are already overkill for most, if not all applications in the Apple Store so the M1 is definitely beyond overkill when its comes to potential "Pro" use scenarios. Apple falls short for developing native applications to actually justify the silicons so this why Im confused to why they even made a "Pro" version of an iPad in reference true alternative professional tablets.
Just got mine in the mail today. ru-vid.comUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U The corners of the box was a little smashed but I think that’s more of the shipping’s fault. iPad was in perfect condition though. I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.
Just bought the 2TB 12.9 WiFi+Cellular 2021 iPad Pro - Upgrading from the 1 TB 2020 version. Like others who own the top spec previous version I had my doubts - but went to see it in the store and so here we are. WHY - T4 connectivity, Bigger SSD and XDR screen. I shoot using Hasselblad and NIkon cameras - so being able to use the 12.9 screen and Phocus 2 is a big help in the field. Having a "brighter Screen" is a bonus. The 2TB -vs- 1TB is another safety step - I copy selected shots and vids from my camera onto the iPadPro so the additional space is a huge help. None of my devices have T4 - but many do have T3 so having T -vs- USB-C is a big help. I have a pair of XDR pro screens and like the quality and brightness of their output -- here is hoping the 2021 iPadPro display is at least as good. I will find out in 1-2 days when it is delivered and I can road test it -- assuming we actually have a bright sunny day anytime soon, rather than the dark, grey, rain.... The magic keyboard - typically useless for me. I place mine in a The Joy Factory MagConnect Universal Tablet Module, which sticks on the back, and I via various clamp solutions I fit it to the inside of a safari vehicle, on a vessel or to a tripod. When shooting in Africa the iPad lives in a protective case as well - keeps the dust out and reduces impacts. I avoided the very miserly Apple trade in option for my 2020 iPad. I am sure to be able to get more than £620 if I sell my 2020 locally or gain Family credit if I pass it on. As I did the 2018 and other versions -- its too big !!! Or I can simply use it as a another display/touchscreen in my house. I travel with both the iPadPro AND a MacBookPro - My 2019 16" i9 MBP with the 5600M GPU and 8TB SSD works great at home and on the road. I have doubts that the new 2021/22 version will be a big leap up -- but we will see.
My family just gifted me the 12.9 iPad pro with the M1, coming from an iPad 2 that I had since the beginning, I'm just enjoying this huge evolution, crazy
Thanks a lot for the comparison - now that we know that the 2022 M2 model is almost identical to the 2021 M1 model this video is still really usable when considering an upgrade from the 2020 model 😉
Went for the 11” M1 iPad Pro as it’s cheaper and I prefer the smaller size. Kinda wish it had the mini LED display, but the 120Hz 600 nit 11” display is already a solid leap over the 2019 iPad Air 3, and Apple just makes excellent LCDs. At WWDC this year, while I’m already pretty happy with how iPadOS 14 runs, I do hope they at least add the ability to use all of the external display and to use it for extra screen space for more apps - opposed to just a blown up version of what is already showing on your iPad.
Apple doesn't make their own display's for the iPad. Samsung makes them. Also, you are right about the multi-screen support but that requires a GPU that's strong enough while also not sacrificing too much battery life. The A12-M1 can do it without breaking a sweat but that's a small margin of iPad users and even smaller margin of those who would actually use the feature. That's not mentioning the fact developers would need to spending money/time optimizing for such a feature only to find out it didn't return enough profit to justify it.
I’d still go for the Ipad Pro 2018 to save some extra cash. The 2018 is no slouch for the average consumer. Can’t wait to get one soon. Great content! 👌🏻👏🏻
All valid reasons, if you have the cash to splurge, more power to you. I have a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 and I could hardly notice the changes with the iOS 14 upgrade. There are niche users out there who are doing amazing stuff with the iPad Pro, but the reality is, this is not a mass consumer product anymore.
For someone who don't have an ipad yet, should I buy the 2020 or 2021? Since the 2020 is cheaper now. Also, how does ipad prices fluctuates, will it go down in a couple months/1 year?
@@lesss4067 super smart choice, they’re pretty much exactly the same. 2020 is still overpowered. But knowing my dumb self I’ll most likely get the 2021 because of FOMO. 😂
just ordered the 2020 model. In my country the 2021 model is almost 200 bucks more. Don't see the reason to go with the 2021 model. 99% of users won't use all that power, including me.
It's a shame that Apple ONLY put the XDR display into the 12.9" 2021 iPad Pro and NOT the 11" as well. I'm thinking of upgrading from an Apple Air 2, and saw the XDR display in person which just looks GORGEOUS. It's just a shame that one it's just too big for me, and also it only takes advantage of certain content. When I upgrade it will have to be the 11" model, but that's alright because I've heard I won't be missing out on much.
Those black bar on an external monitor is a shame…i mean we buy an expensive ipad “PRO experience” and it cant fully display on external monitor like MacBook pro…i wonder if we see black bar on a square monitor…lol
@@pokiblue5870 , that's because the iPad is optimized for a specific native resolution in order to preserve battery life. Adding an external monitor(s) would require the GPU to push 2-3 times more pixels on top of using more RAM so therefor it would drain the battery. Yes, you could plug it in but that defeats the purpose of being a tablet for most. Personally, i would love if the iPad had a docking feature to turn the iPad into a Mac Mini but that's Apple shooting itself in the foot lol
@@randommiker hopefully they make ipad Pro OS a feature without black bar ! TBH i dont mind the ipad pro to be connected at all time because i know ill use lots of power and work hours
I've been hitting that procreate layer limit a lot, so I upgraded, only to learn that developers don't have access to more than 5gb of RAM. So now I get 5 more layers... Updates supposedly will fix that. But for now I have 11gb chillin' inside my iPad doing nothing. I could buy it that older iPads needed the extra Gs for memory managment, but not 8gb.
I had a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” (or maybe it was a 2018, I can’t remember for sure) and I upgraded about a year ago to the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9” because the battery life on my old iPad was almost nonexistent. I had to have it plugged in at all times in order to use it, which is very impractical for basically anyone but especially because I use my iPad for practically everything I do - for my job, my business I’m working on starting up, for entertainment, etc. I’m really happy with my new iPad! It has a much better display & the difference in the size of the screen compared to the 10.5” is ahhhmazing! As far as upgrading from the 2020 to the 2021...to each their own, but for me personally - I don’t see a need to when there isn’t much of a difference between the two generations & my current 2020 iPad works perfectly! I’ll upgrade when mine shits out.
Great review. I have the iPad Pro 11" 2020 and I have been tossing around the idea of upgrading to the new 12.9". I edit photos and do a lot of drawing on my iPad's, not to mention nearly all of my lecture's and classroom demonstrations on my iPad. I just wish Apple would create Logic Pro for their Pro iPads. Still undecided on the upgrade...
Logic Pro could easily transfer over to the iPad M1 because its already programmed for the M1 series but then that's technically making the iPad Pro a Macbook Pro with touchscreen. Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot.
I REALLY want to get the new 12.9" Pro for taking notes and doing Math; however, I already have a M1 MBA, getting this iPad would be a total waste of money. Basically, I'm paying $1K + to do work that can also be completed on a cheap tablet.
I'm in the same the situation but I have MBA M1 + Ipad pro 12.9 2020 + Magic Keyboard. I want to sell the Magic Keyboard because I am not using it because of the software of the ipad pro, it is much better mac os.
i had the 2017 10.5 iPad Pro before and now have purchased the iPad Pro M1 12.9 which is a hugee upgrade for me regardless. I can't wait to get it on June 4th.
I just got mine today, coming from the 9.7 iPad..it's such a huge upgrade. I really do love it. I'm not sure why the bloom seems to bother people but so far it's really beautiful. I legit wanted to cry, it's been 5 years since I've bought an apple product 😂
@@Gen_66 lol? 2017 ipad pro vs 2021 iPad Pro - A10X vs M1 - 4gb ram vs 8gb ram - redesign - Apple pencil 1 vs 2 - miniled vs lcd - thunderbolt usb c vs lightning - probably more I can't think of at this moment
Great review as always. I'm still happy with my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro. For my workflow, the 2018 is still snappy and the display is very good. I'll wait to see what 2022 brings...
I’m in the exact same boat. My 2018 is still very fast at everything I use it for and with the Apple Pencil 2 and Magic Keyboard, I feel like it’s the same experience as using the 2021 M1 models.
@@ClassicKrusty I have a hunch too it’ll be 2023 and a new generation. Idk if apple does but this 2021 feels and looks like it’s just a spec bump for the current gen
@@DannyLrides Totally agree. Seems very, "Apple" to me. The M1 iPad feels like it's just an "S" version (iPad S). I got the 2020 12.9 and I couldn't justify throwing down another 1500+ for the M1 version. Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way.
Great video. Really appreciate not bsing at all and cutting to the chase at the beginning. Still watched the full video. Wish people did this more often! Got my sub
I am thinking almost a week and still have no decision of buying iPad Pro 10” yet. Pls advise what choice should I go with. Here’s what I found: Option 1- New iPad Pro M1 with 128GB for $799 from Apple. Option 2- Used iPad Pro 2020 with 256GB just $679 good condition from EBAY. I just need iPad for watching video, social media and basic online browsing, but I need to use it some time for Windows Remote access for my WorkFromHome. Can you help me on decision? Thanks
Every year the new apple products get hyped up and then we get told not to buy them , wait another year. I say if you want it, get it. If you keep waiting, you will never get any of them.
@Boggle Minded was going to, but decided to trade in my 12.9 Pro as I just find the size to big and I decided I don’t need both sizes. But, yet otherwise the 2020 is perfectly great like your videos are. 😁
If you want the latest and fastest one and have the money, go for the m1. You can find the 2020 12.9 models for $900 ish so if you just want an iPad Pro and don’t necessarily need the RAM speed and liquid display go with the 2020 model.
I have the iPad Air 2020 and the Touch ID is incredibly convenient. If you have heavy duty work like editing etc go for the IPad Pro, but if it’s for school, notes, art etc go for the Air but it’s ultimately up to you
Thank you for the review. HQ games load a lot faster and scene changes are pretty snappier too. So maybe Ram apps limitation as for now is a issue, or simply apps not updated to use the full potential of M1, maybe next WWDC will see something ab it..
@@bubblyboyo1 drawing on the iPad is really fun and convenient vs a regular drawing tablet. I say if all you want to do is sketch/doodle nothing really important, go for iPad Air. But if you're more serious with your art, I think the iPad pro is best.
I needed to upgrade my 2018 64gb pro because of space, and decided to cancel my pre-order and go for a £400 cheaper second-hand 2020 model for the reasons you point out in this video. Hopefully the right decision…
Yeah I think so. I never feel it isn’t powerful enough. Bigger Procreate canvases would be nice, though not a dealbreaker. But iPadOS runs perfectly in general. Just wish I’d waited longer, the second hand price has dropped quite a bit since then. @@yarknhasret3638
I don’t have any IPad but I hesitate to get a pro one from 2020 or the pro one from 2021.. only because of the OLED quality screen.. do you really feel the difference?
Who upgrades an iPad Pro every year? Lol. I still have my iPad Air from 2013 and my son uses it everyday. I think it’s about time to buy a new iPad Pro.
The 2021 11" M1 ipad pro is just a super polished device. For once in my life, I can finally hold a device and say "Damn! This is perfect." I added an external portable DAC amp with IEMs, Stylus, and a 100 W charger and it is everything I ever wished for and more. Once I add my SSD to the setup, it's everything I'll ever need. It's a good time to be alive.
I upgraded from an iPad 2020 from an iPad 2017 and there wasn’t much difference and I shouldn’t have wasted my money. So I highly doubt upgrading to the m1 version would be any different.
I just want your opinion I still have the first edition of the iPad Pro and I'm thinking to buy a new one would you buy the 2021 version , wait for the 2022 version or just upgrade to the 2020 version I ask this coz I also have an iMac
For my 2014 iPad Air 2 64gb only wifi gold 6 year old iPad I’m happy to upgrade to the 2021 M1 256gb wifi plus cellular silver Woah the 64gb to 256gb was a big jump it’s being delivered right now can’t wait
So I am thinking of buying either the new M1 but price is huge or buy a used 2020 with somewhat ok price. Buying for making art. What would you recommend in this situation?
After tow years of Ipad 2020 released did you think Ipad 2020 deserve to buy or I upgrade to 2021? I ask this question because I'm not used Ipad befor but I want something powerful and it's deserve the spending money for.
I own the 2020 pro 11” and it’s my first ever iPad. I do digital art and find it great for working on side projects along side my PC. ANYONE, thinking of buying a IPad the 2020 pro if still awesome and me also being a techi, the updated features it seem to have in the newer model is not worth the price or the upgrade. IMO. GG
Hey great video! Thanks for breaking down, I’m not a tech guy and displays and speed ratings mean almost nothing to me unless I see it hands on. The black comparison was easy to see especially on zoom. I’ve noticed blacks are often not truly blacks but a gray. Of course, my iPad is a 2010 so.....haha.
I'm planning to buy an ipad pro. Should I get the ipad pro 11' M1 128gb or ipad pro 11' 2020 256gb? The price is about the same here in my country. Help me choose please.
I have my 2018 IPad Pro 12" and still don't feel a need to upgrade. What I want is more ports doubt I'll see that and for Apple to make iPadOS more like OSX. Better yet ability to run OSX on a iPad that would get me to upgrade. With Apple new SoC they have started making one basic computer with difference types of bodies. M1 for a mini computer, desktop, laptop, tablet, add a received and a phone or watch. One chip lots of shapes depending on your preference.
Upgrading from 12.9 FIRST GEN PRO…still have not done so-but financially I am ready-I want the latest but should I get the 12.9 or MAX out the 11?? Both have the same screens or is the 12.9 better…
I upgraded from a iPad 4th gen. So yeah, I’m happy with that decision. Lol. I ended up getting the previous generation Magic Keyboard. At the time I got it for $289? I think someone at Amazon screwed up on the pricing for the 12 inch model because it is now over $300.
I bought pretty much every iPad since the first one. It’s always minimal to last years. You don’t really notice the bump until the iPad is 2 to 3 years old. But realistically. 1. Does it matter at that point. And 2.are we at a point where the average user just isn’t going to see the performance gain. But yes,the new FaceTime camera is amazing though.
I am student planing to buy iPad for taking notes and drawing and light gaming , which one should I buy ? Is 2020 ipad pro is still worth to buy or should I buy the M1 one and what size should do think will be better for me , I can’t decide between 12.9’ and 11’ 😬😬 I hope someone replies this comment
So one thing I noticed that you didn’t touch on is the real difference in reflectivity of the display. Look back at your footage. You can clearly see the background in the reflection of the 2020 iPad and not at all in the M1. Just saying. This is the first that I have seen this and would be worth the upgrade for me.
My 2020 iPad Pro works flawlessly and since iPadOS 15 didn’t have any real Pro functionality, I’m feeling like I’m not at a loss. Was hoping they added more desktop pro apps like Logic Pro but it looks like they won’t be doing that.
I am getting an iPad 12.9 2020 256gb version for 650. Is that ok or shall I go for M1 version which is £350 more. I have never owned an iPad before. Please suggest. Thank you
I wanna buy my first iPad so which one should i go for as my first iPad(p.s. ipad pro m1 is in my budget). I will be using it for making notes, movies, games.
Have you gotten a chance to test the 1 or 2TB models of the fifth GEN? They have 16 gigs of RAM, and I feel like that would make a noticeable difference.
I bought the iPad 12.9 inch 2020 model last year and cost me a lot of money already. It was more than A$2,000. And, I put it to return to the apple and get the new M1 Chip but my iPad would get only less A$800 worth. WHAT A RIP OFF! WHAT A SMART AS! That’s how their business is. They drop iPad Pro every year by upgrading little bit with marvellous price tag. The previous models are required to update latest software, at the end of the day new updates will downgrade the tablet making them slow and low quality image. We as consumers always spend much money on them.
It’s a major difference and I think it is worth upgrading because of what you said in this video The display on the 2020 iPad grayish and dimmer versus the 2021 iPad Pro I am one of those person who want to have the sharpest cleanest accurate display quality in my movies games or web surfing and office work
Got the 512GB 2020 12.9 for 750€ brand new. I was about to buy the M1 12.9 128GB for 1100€ and then visited marketplace and BAAAAM! saw a girl posted the 2020 version and messaged her. She sells it for 900€ but tried to offer 750€ and she accepted. So lucky!
Thank you very much for this. I bought my very first ipad (the ipad pro 12.9 inch 1tb 2020) just 3 months ago, I had no idea there was a new one on the horizon, otherwise I'd have waited. I use it for general things, but also for on the go gaming, music production and some video production. I feel a bit gutted of course, as that 16gb of ram and faster processing of the 2021 model could possibly/theoretically come in very handy with all the tracks and effects I use in a mix for music production and with the vfx in video production, and of course gaming.. ..though I understand apps are limited to how much memory they can use, but that could quite possibly change in a future update, which we could possibly find out about at the upcoming developers conference..
I have been using the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 for two years, just recently accidentally shattered the screen. While getting it repaired I bought the 2021 M1 iPad Pro to check out..got the 2018 back from the shop..the older display looks hazy in comparison.
