Looking for an affordable steel gravel/adventure bike? The 2021 Marin Nicasio 2 ticks a lot of boxes. Here’s my first impression after building the bike up.
Basic specs; butted cromoly frame, carbon fibre fork, Shimano Tiagra 11-34t 10spd gearing w/ FSA 50/34t cranks, Tiagra hydraulic brakes, 700c x 37mm WTB Riddler tyres.
I bought this bike from www.bicyclesonline.com.au in January 2021 at full retail.
I’ve been riding bikes since 1974 and reviewing bikes professionally (on and off) since 1996. Now I just do it for fun!

I picked up one at the start of the year. Not a bad bike, but it feels a bit sluggish.. heavy! I put some Conti GP 4 season tyres on it and it's rolls pretty nice, i'm still keen on shaving off some weight for road use though. Considering a wheelset upgrade or another steel frame that is lighter with more aggressive geometry.

Most reviews I saw were super happy with the bike! So now after a while what is your point of view? : ) And you really think its heavy? I mean for a steel bike with heavy rims thats a decent weight or not? : )
@carl8568
@carl8568 Год назад
@@ak2298 Yeah it's alright. I took the Conti 4 season tyres off and put the WTB studded tyres back on and bought a dedicated steel road bike. Still planning to upgrade the rims down the track, I'm pretty happy with the Tiagra groupset though.

Thanks for reviewing :) Is the freehub compatible with 11/12 speed road cassettes?

Hi mate - from memory it ran an HG cassette body, so you could run an 11spd easily enough. If you can source an HG-compatible 12spd cassette (like a SunRace), it should work fine as well. I sold the bike a little while ago now, but I'm looking at another Marin to join the fleet.

I'm contemplating either getting the Marin Headwind 1 gravel bike or waiting a few weeks for the Headwind 2(when stocks of the small size arrive in Aust). I'm curious as to why you went with the Marin Nicasio. A preference for steel or cost or other reason/s? How are your impressions now after more time on this bike. Thank you.

Hey mate - you nailed it on both cost and material. I didn't want to spend huge dollars - those days are behind me when it comes to bikes - and steel or alloy was the preference. I was also keen on the brand itself. Impressions are still good. I've added a 48cm wide PNW bar, ESI tape and low-profile Panaracer GravelKing 700c x 38mm tyres, which has improved its road manners nicely.

Hi mate, How are you going with this bike? Have you taken it on the gravel? How does it go? Looking at purchasing one predominantly as a gravel machine

No chance for a gravel roll yet - my usual loop is inaccessible! Still think it's a bloody good buy; tonnes of clearance for bigger rubber, smart and economical spec and a nice frame fit.

Does the bike feel heavy compared to any other road bikes you may have? I want to get that same bike
@TimRobson
@TimRobson 3 года назад
Hey - it actually feels pretty good on the road. Definitely not as direct as the last roadie I had (carbon Canyon) and 55psi 37mm tyres feel a lot different to 95psi 28mm tyres! Having 2x chainrings on the front gives you that top end punch to keep things up to speed, too. It’s heavier, sure, and you might have to work harder to stay with the shop bunch, but I wouldn’t call it ‘slow’.

I have a lower spec version of this bike with 2x8 drive train and steel fork. My medium weighed 28.6 pounds stock, but with a few careful upgrades its now at 25. My previous (aluminum) bike was about 22.5 and I only notice the difference during hard acceleration. If you want a versatile gravel bike but don't want to give up shortish chainstays, its a pretty good option. However if the extra weight of budget steel is a concern to you, there is always aluminum. My understanding is that the Nicasio 2 is constructed of a nicer heat treated steel tubeset that in combination with the carbon fork probably cuts 1.5 pounds from my model. The Nicasio 2 also has thru axles, flat mount calipers and a flared head tube. Much more modern in that regard.

@@toddmcdonough Spot on - the Nicasio 2 is all of those things. It's right on 12kg/26.4lb with pedals and cages in XXL size, and I reckon I could shave a bit here and there... but it's not going to be a focus for me.

What is the advantage of steel vs alu?
@bccal5982
@bccal5982 3 года назад
Steel flexes and offers good vibration damping (comfy), but can be heavier Aluminum is more responsive and lighter on road, but the ride vibration is harsher
@TimRobson
@TimRobson 3 года назад
What BC Cal said; good steel frames have a zing and a spring that alloy frames don't have, but they are heavier (all as a rule, and comparing similar-specced/priced bikes). I'd also add steel can be more easily welded back together out the back of nowhere if you're touring.
