Diesel is 14 cents cheaper in Berkeley CA than gas and I don’t have to drive 20 miles to find the cheapest gas like I used to before the diesel Sprinter
My favorite thing about the older sprinters is that they don’t try to get all mercedes fancy with the controls. I can’t stand the newer Mercedes controls or the controls in their fancy sedans. Much less intuitive than a Honda or something. Their gear shifting bothers me. Sprinter seems to be a little better than the sedans and other mercedes models though. To each his own 🤷♂️. A lot of these “luxury” car companies need to take a lesson from Honda and Toyota on user interface. The Japanese companies seem to do a lot of research on intuitiveness in their controls in their newer vehicles. Good job showing what the van can do and mercedes controls. Great video.
yeah still waiting for honda and Toyota to bring cargo vans to America!!! That would be awesome. I know in Mexico they have the passenger vans that are hightop. I don't know why we don't have them here, but I have seen some sweet buildouts in those!
Dude we totally agree! I wish Toyota would make a large cargo van in the US. It was nice to have some nice features like hands free and cruise control. Also it just drove so nice it just cruised like a boat it was a dream. I hated the gear shifter on these new models the old school sprinters have a better shifter style, I could never figure it out. I loved it but I'm not ready to buy one but the gas engine did do pretty decent on gas, a lot of the time we were running it in the parking lot to stay warm getting terrible MPG.
I think you are helping me to save $12,000. I was going to get an MB 4x4, but it seems that I don't really need it. Besides, the 4x4 comes only with diesel engine which is more expensive than the gas engine.
I have a 4x4 sprinter. I drove it through Snow country and I almost never turned on the 4x4. The only time it comes in handy is when you're on sand, in a mud bog, or going up and down a slippery slope.
As cool as I think having a 4x4 is, I'm not sure if I want to go through rough terrain in my full time house. It's like going through an earthquake in a normal house. I can already see my dishes flying around. I'm seriously thinking about this. Gas Sprinter. It's 12k cheaper than it's 4x4 counterpart. Imagine all the nice upgrades I can do with 12k. No having to cut corners on my build.
What about mpg? I see 14 mpg after 129 miles. It is not encouraging unless you drove on a difficult road. My 2016 Sprinter 4x4 shows an average of 18.8 mpg after 98,000 miles. It is true, you don't get to use the 4x4 option often but knowing that it`s there is reassuring when you drive in snow or off road, in very isolated areas, without cell coverage.
Totally agree! We have a diesel sprinter and it's pretty loaded up with a big rack and all that jazz and it gets better gas mileage than the gas sprinter. I think it got around 15mpg in the gas powered van which isn't terrible but not great. Yeah the 4x4 is awesome I just think most people are not adventurous enough to actually use it.
Hey dude, thanks for responding to my previous question. Do you recommend using foil faced fiberglass insulation to insulate a van build on a MB 144? Is it safe or hazardous though behind covered walls of van? Thanks dude.
I wouldn’t recommend it. You want something more weather resistant in case anything was to happen we have a few good videos on van insulation as well as our masterclass is full of information as well.
whoa! You guys really sent it in that rental van! Looks like a fun trip and a pretty entertaining test drive. KuKu Campers has the nice ready to go campers! I will have to keep them in mind this summer when in Denver! One question, you were driving at one point and the backup camera looked like it was on... does that work when you are driving?!
Don’t need 4wd? Then you end with the van getting pulled out of a parking spot. Hahaha I have a 4x4 Sprinter and no way will 2wd go where this goes. I have a steep driveway and always try to do it in 2wd but it doesn’t always make it. I have studded snow tires and know how to drive in snow. I highly recommend the 4x4 if you spend much time in ice and snow. Or on the beach, it saved my butt there too.
I think anyone, even in my Subaru, would have been stuck in the black ice! We almost broke our neck getting out of the van. The guy worked there and said he pulls 4 runners, Subaru’s, and other 4x4/AWD alllllllll day. He was ready to pull us out after we got out, almost kooked out and ran over our boards, and then pulled back in to get them... chilled for a couple hours and then got stuck! Obviously 4x4 is the best, if you can afford it. But if you can’t afford the extra $12k, (which is what we specialize in, budget friendly options) the standard gas powered sprinter handled surprisingly well! We’ve seen 4x4 get buried in the sand and helped quite a few in Baja pop out of the holes they dug themselves into. Obvi we want a 4x4 like you Rob, you lucky dog!!
@@dh1147 I live in northern New England, where we get crappy snow and slush and then it gets cold AF and freezes solid. I could not get in and out of my driveway without 4wd and M-B made the only high roof van with it at the time. Now you can get Transits.
So glad I found this channel. Trying to decide if I should go with a 4WD vs 2WD for when it starts storming on the highway. Would that be a tire issue or a traction issue to keep you from spinning out of control. Thanks
It could be both just depends on the type of snow that you are driving through. In this video it was a dry snow that wasn't very icy. You could always use chains to make it handle better in icy conditions.
As Idaho's retired film commissioner, it was so nice to see it filmed in Idaho! All familiar locations to me. I live in Boise and am considering options for a camper van, on a budget. But complicating the issue is it will have to be my only vehicle. Looking at the crew van so I can seat 5 but easily (on rollers!) take out the 2nd row to camp in. Mostly solo travel. TY!
Thanks bro! Sometimes we feel RU-vid suppressed the Kookz truths! 😂 We appreciate all the love guys! One day all the Kookz will reunite on the open road 🙌
