SYNOPSIS
The Kiger arrived on our shores in August 2021. Referred to as the Sub 4 Metre SUV by Renault. It is here to get into a very tough and competitive market where it will go toe to toe with Nissan Magnite, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Kia Sonet, etc.
Priced as follows:
Life - R199 900
Zen - R214 900
Zen (AMT) - R224 900
Zen (Turbo) - R249 900
Intens (Turbo Manual) - R269 900
Intens (Turbo CVT) - R289 900
This market is one that consumers are filled with choice. Competitive prices and almost similar offerings are leaving dealerships with a few options but to lure consumers using everything else other than just the tangible product.
In a market where the cousin Magnite is already on the up having found more than 600 new homes in August after having been launched 2 months prior to the Kiger, it has already set the tone as to what one can expect from the Kiger.
This is like a raised Kwid, with a similar styling but more agressive look. It is surely a good looking car and numbers don't lie Kwid is the best selling car that Renault is selling in the country, registering a thousand sales in August 2021 and it is not a fluke as its been hitting high numbers ever since its been launched.
What you get with the Kiger is something almost everyone is looking for, call it SUV/CUV or anything like that. Unlike baby sister Kwid, you get to fit your family and when alone yout still get the intimate feel of a small car.
What suprised me is that it is small from outside but it opens up when you get inside. With a class leading boot space and practicality (so many pockets to put your snacks, drinks and whatever you want to store around you while travelling).
Leads on safety as well, 4 airbags, the competition mostly offer 2 airbags in this class. Expecting a 4 star Global N-Cap rating as it shares the platform with a 4 star rated Triber MPV.
It is by no means near perfect, too much use of plastic in the interior means you don't necessarily get the best insulation when driving, the 74kw/160nm engine also feels like its working way harder than expected, especially on Eco Mode, with no cruise control at all means your long journeys with family will be accompanied by a numb right leg and the service plan is really really thin at 2 years/30 000km unless if you go for Turbo charged engines which will give you 45 000km. Overall 5 years/150 000km does give some assurance though.
