SYNOPSIS
The Kiger arrived on our shores in August 2021. Referred to as the Sub 4 Metre SUV by Renault. It is here to get into a very tough and competitive market where it will go toe to toe with Nissan Magnite, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Kia Sonet, etc.
Priced as follows:
Life - R199 900
Zen - R214 900
Zen (AMT) - R224 900
Zen (Turbo) - R249 900
Intens (Turbo Manual) - R269 900
Intens (Turbo CVT) - R289 900
This market is one that consumers are filled with choice. Competitive prices and almost similar offerings are leaving dealerships with a few options but to lure consumers using everything else other than just the tangible product.
In a market where the cousin Magnite is already on the up having found more than 600 new homes in August after having been launched 2 months prior to the Kiger, it has already set the tone as to what one can expect from the Kiger.
This is like a raised Kwid, with a similar styling but more agressive look. It is surely a good looking car and numbers don't lie Kwid is the best selling car that Renault is selling in the country, registering a thousand sales in August 2021 and it is not a fluke as its been hitting high numbers ever since its been launched.
What you get with the Kiger is something almost everyone is looking for, call it SUV/CUV or anything like that. Unlike baby sister Kwid, you get to fit your family and when alone yout still get the intimate feel of a small car.
What suprised me is that it is small from outside but it opens up when you get inside. With a class leading boot space and practicality (so many pockets to put your snacks, drinks and whatever you want to store around you while travelling).
Leads on safety as well, 4 airbags, the competition mostly offer 2 airbags in this class. Expecting a 4 star Global N-Cap rating as it shares the platform with a 4 star rated Triber MPV.
It is by no means near perfect, too much use of plastic in the interior means you don't necessarily get the best insulation when driving, the 74kw/160nm engine also feels like its working way harder than expected, especially on Eco Mode, with no cruise control at all means your long journeys with family will be accompanied by a numb right leg and the service plan is really really thin at 2 years/30 000km unless if you go for Turbo charged engines which will give you 45 000km. Overall 5 years/150 000km does give some assurance though.

What an awesome review! I have the Zen turbo variant and am enjoying the car. Some minor bugbears and caveats though. No boot light (as you pointed out) is peculiar! The seatbelt clips in the front are pesky to access (in my experience. The drivers footwell has an area which is exposed. No cupholders in the front of the car! (incredible oversight!) On the positive end we have very good fuel economy, a decent and pliant ride, good spec level and great overall value for money, styling (while subjective) is generally excellent, car is really spacious and deceptively so (as you've depicted). Renault have done a great job here.

You are one of the people I hear saying that. Honestly I really thought its a great product at this price range. Especially considering its a practicality on budget car. True, I thought the cupholder thing was put in the bin as I had forgotten. That is a big blunder. We live in these cars😉

I really liked the looks of this car when I saw it for the first time, but I thought its a kwid, but then the size was obviously disagreeing, anyway I don't have a doubt that it will sell well. thanks for the review, and may the channel grow.

It does look like the Kwid but it has some striking elements in design, especially with the LEDs. I think they will sell as well. Thanks a lot once again Demtumza🙂

Another great review mate. Keep them coming. I guess the questions still on allot of people's mind is if French Cars in the South African market can be trusted. By this I mean parts availability, service requirements and general reliability as this is where all French manufactured cars seem to fall short.
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
Yeah, they used to have a serious issue with parts. I think though it had to do with the amount of cars they were selling. I once had an issue with a key card and they wanted to order it from Europe before I got helped by someone outside the dealership. Lately though they have been selling quite a lot of cars (Thanks to Clio and Kwid), if this can sell as expected as well then maybe there will be more parts available.

How would 3 sensors for rear parking even be sufficient for anything other than reversing towards a wall or other large car relatively straight. For everything else it wouldn't even pick it up.
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
Considering the size of the car, I think they are sufficient. Infact in my opinion the addition of cameras and sensors in this segment and the hatch backs is just to follow trends, hence it is mostly made just to cover the objects laying low. If you can check most of them in this segment don't have cross traffic alert as its a relatively small car for many people.
@ZakPooe

Man, your videos are exciting. I've been waiting to see a proper review of this car and see what it really offers. Renault is playing in the safe space with their cars lately. I just wonder why they haven't locally launched the new Clio and facelift Megane yet, I mean they've been out in the EU for quite some time now 🤔
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
Thanks a lot Zee. 🙏. Well I would question the clio's absence more considering that it a proven seller compared to the bigger sister Megane. Its definitely a chess game out there to get all the right moves. Cross overs and SUVs are outselling everything currently so I understand why they would push them quicker than others.
@ZakPooe
@ZakPooe 2 года назад
@@sebuwam yea true, the Clio has been a success for a long time here, I think there's something deeper going with Renault than we know. The Captur has a new model, too that's been out in the EU for some time, it's still not here either. They only updated the Koleos (dropping the 4WD version 🤔), which was a bit of a strange move considering it's not really that appealing to most buyers 🤷🏽‍♂️
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
@@ZakPooe Yeah, maybe their analysis has been that sales are held up by Kwid (mostly accounting for 50% of sales) then Duster (not sure how many), so rather than position themselves with more premium products they can push budget cars more. Their current line-up is budget based, even the Koleos, in its class if you check the price, there are few that can go with it (Putting Haval H6 aside). People still prefer the Nissan X-Trail though which is the same car. So the brand positioning talks. Renault has a history of issues after sales and that it not helping them when people are making decisions on bigger and more expensive cars than the small ones.
@ZakPooe
@ZakPooe 2 года назад
@@sebuwam I suppose you're right, their focus has shifted to these budget-friendly models, they're definitely more profitable. And the global electrification drive also dictates these moves, it'd be a shame if they don't bring the new Clio and Megane (which is the last ICE-powered Megane). Admittedly, I have a bit of an attachment with the brand because I've driven 2 Megane models and would've loved to see and maybe drive the last one, locally 😅
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
@@ZakPooe 🤣. I see now where you got attached. Well the pre-facelift Megane has been one car that I thought I can consider 2nd hand if I had to look for a R250K car. The Clio should have been here by now, I don't know what's the hold up. We always get things late, which is a shame.

Any issue with back tyre fender parts to take care of water wading from tail lamps

Quick question Do you think this cat would be ideal for a first time car buyer?
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
Definitely, this segment is here to eat in the maller siblings shine like Sandero in this case of Renault. The world is looking for SuV/Cross so they make them big enough for a small family but intimate enough to live with everyday even with no family.

At that price point isn't the entry level haval jolion a better option?
@sebuwam
@sebuwam 2 года назад
Well, it totally depends. You talking Jolion City, which is R10K more, manual and no major difference to this one in features. Has more cabin space but has a smaller boot. Better engine and comfort. In my view it is pound for pound, unless you start talking Jolion Premium which is R40K more and a different bracket in this case🤔
