The record-breaking winter storm hit Texas hard in 2021, leaving much of the state under a severe freeze. On the Texas coast, this has resulted in a fish kill with long-term implications yet to be determined. The Rockport shorelines are seeing increasing piles of dead mullet, spotted seatrout, red and black drum, and countless bait fish and mullet.
This is a heartbreaking sight, and there is a worry among the state fishermen of what our 2021 fishing season will be. I've seen the social media keyboard warriors attacking each other over who should be fishing and how. We need to let our professionals determine how best to move forward, and be empathetic to each of our parts during this time.

Sad, looks like D-Day out there. Parents went down to RP to stay the weekend at their lot on a canal. They ended up coming back early because of the dead rotting fish smell.
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors 3 года назад
Those canal neighborhoods got hit hard, since the wind was just right after the dead fish started floating to push massive amounts into the canals. It's certainly improved now, though I've found pockets of dead fish here and there that still stink. Thanks for watching!

Yes, and it won't be the last. I think most folks are looking to the immediate repercussions to fishing and limits. In the long run, though, it will recover. Thanks for watching!

I live 1/4 mile from the Futon Harbor, the smell of rotting fish last night in the fog was getting pretty bad. Seagulls can't eat them all. The scavengers are too fat to fly or run away. Lots of well fed vultures too! If some level of 'cleanup' is not implemented, the coast of Texas will soon become a toxic soup of fishkill, unfit for anything let alone tourists.

Yeah, I'm hoping for a quick clean-up solution. It's starting to get pretty ripe around here.

Thanks for showing us how damaging that freeze was to the area. I really like the Rockport-Fulton area and have stayed, relaxed, & fished there many times And you're right...let's leave it up to the experts at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. We don't need the advice or the intimidation from people on either side of the issue that go by feelings only regardless of what the facts may be. Appreciate your video. Hopefully this fish killing freeze didn't extend all the way down the Texas Coast to South Padre Island. I have not seen nor heard of any reports from that far down south.

I heard they got die offs as far south as Baffin, but I haven't heard about South Padre either. Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by!

I wish there are a lot more of the hardhead catfish being killed instead of the other species since very few people ever eat them anyway.
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors

We actually saw more hardheads washed up on the gulf beaches than the bay beaches. There were quite a few killed, from what we saw. I was surprised, as they are such a hearty fish. Thanks for watching!

I too have not been fishing this year. Love kayak fishing along galveston. Haven't the heart to put kayak in water now. A suggestion to any of us who choose to fish now, catch and release only and flatten out your barbs on the end of your hooks so as to minimize damage to the fish. Harder to land that way but easier on the fish. God bless all you true fisherman as well ad T.P.W D.
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors 3 года назад
I've seen folks flattening their barbs, and it's certainly something to consider along with catch and release. Lowers the stress, and chance of killing the fish, plus makes for easier release. With nicer weather moving in, I will be back on the water soon. Thanks for your thoughts, and for watching!

I thought fish are cold blooded
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors
@TheGoodeLifeOutdoors 3 года назад
They are, which means they rely on the temperature of the water to regulate. My understanding is many of the fish that died were caught in the shallower water when the temperature dropped quickly. They couldn’t escape to deeper water before the temperature became lethal. Thanks for watching!

It’s sad to see the amount of these in Key Allegro. The channels are just filled with them. Breaks my heart.... I saw pelicans and dolphins at the beach filling up on these stunned babies. Seeing the amount of stunned sea turtles, too. So sad! I love seeing everyone helping though. I love how our community comes together and gives!!

Anglers that truly love fishing should all understand and agree that catch n release is PRIORITY at least for the next 2 years.I use to miss n want snow cuz of how rare it is here in sa tx but i take it back.I dont want snow or freezing weather if this it what happens.Truly cant wait for it to get somewhat like it was b4.

This is an interesting solution, and I'd be curious if our local municipalities have given this any thought. It's going to stink, no matter where it's deposited, so why not find a way to compost it and help out our gardeners! Thanks for watching!

How devastating and sad. 🙏 that things will get better day by day. That storm is still really leaving behind a trail of problems that is going to really take time to get over. Still so unbelievable to me it reached our Texas coast and took its toll on ocean life. My thought and prayers are with you. Take care.

Can relate to how you feel in every way! We get to spend maybe 5-6 weeks a year locally. Just happened to be down for the freeze. The fishing in the days leading up to it, were nothing less than stellar. Afterwards, once power finally came back and we could lower our boat off the lift, being on the water was so ominous and bleak feeling. Went out with my young son one day and brought rods....didn’t even wet a line. Just depressing and disheartening in so many ways. This too shall pass. I keep reminding myself of a few things. 1. There are plenty of fish that were in deeper water and offshore that will be able to rebound the fishery with our help. 2. Lots of seasonal baitfish will enter the bays soon....shad in particular in big numbers. Shrimp will also be available so I think the fish that made it will adjust and have food sources. 3. If we conserve and scale back our harvest I think we will be ok sooner than later. We all need to do our part. Dang it’s hard right now though.🙏🏻🤞🏻that nature rebounds quickly and people help it along. Thanks for the video. Expressed my own feelings through it all perfectly. Cheers.
