The New 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime -is Toyota's Halo Car For Plug-In Hybrid Technology. It looks great, it is very fast, has great EV range and still retains all the goodness of a RAV4. The trade-off is the higher price tag. Is this the right compact SUV for you?

I own the SE trim. You will not see any of these Primes at base trim prices. So far, all of them are delivered fully packaged. I have continued to keep track as another family member wants one too. Markup has been from $2,000 with extras to $15,000 in my area.

I believe these cars have a weird braking sensation is because the first inch you mentioned only increases regenerative braking, then once you pass that point the actual brakes engage. My chevy volt is the same way. I've found once you actually slightly engage the actual brakes, but not increasingly, it's a very smooth stop.

"Why would anyone buy from another manufacturer at this point?" The answer is simple. If you want a plug-in hybrid within the next two to three years it won't be a RAV4 Prime. The RAV4 Prime is part of a bait and switch scheme to convince potential customers to wait until at least 2022 and probably the following calendar year to get this vehicle or to purchase an existing non-plugin Rav4 hybrid.

I think people should also be wary of how much it's going to cost to "fill up" the battery. In places like California or Hawaii, EV cars don't make sense financially. You're paying a lot for electricity, a lot more for the EV car vs regular car. I calculated that in California, under regular ChargePoint rates, it costs $3 to fill up the 15 kwh EV portion of the battery. At home, under the lowest tier rates of 0.17cents, it's around $2.60. That's to go 40 miles on EV. That's really not much better than gas cars. And then you have to worry about longevity of the lithium ion battery (which is usually rated for 1000 full cycles of charge). Hybrid car batteries cost a couple thousand dollars to replace, and they generally use NiMH. The Rav4 Prime battery pack will cost likely cost several thousands to replace. All in all, it's a novelty that will introduce a lot of future headaches due to the complicated drive train and battery degradation. You have to wonder if it's worth the extra $10 to $20k premium over the regular Rav4. I kinda wish they would just bring out a Rav4 with either the old v6 or a 2.5L turbo engine.
@dalab9716
@dalab9716 3 года назад
V6 was good, my bro in law has one. Good point on mileage, gas is a little over $3 here currently, so a charge instead of a gallon of gas only saves 40 cents by your calculation. The main draw for the electric is that little extra range, mileage but mainly the tax advantages due to plug in capability. I'm replacing my old V6 Camry and this thing should have similar power. My dealers here in CA wanted up to 5k over sticker for 2020 rav4 LTD, so I don't mind paying more for a year newer car with state rebate and fed tax credit. And way more power and features. The battery pack and engine should both have good long warranties like the Prius.

4/21 date because I think they are only building 5,000. I've been on waiting list since January and my XSE is arriving in port in L.A. in 2 weeks. Longo Toyota in El Monte started taking orders in December 2020 to sell them at sticker price. I'm not going to sweat the interior, thief dealers out here last year wanted $2,500 to 5,000 over sticker for a 2020 hybrid. I'll get a newer car with great performance and a state tax rebate and federal tax credit to help defray high price.

Charles Yu more like they’ve been researching and developing over a year. You can’t just build a new model car in a few months lol. China’s electric vehicle demand is ahead of us. There’s not enough demand in the USA which is why they are late here. Also toyota invested into teslas research and development when they first started so Toyota knows what they are doing.

Toyota's concept is good, though flawed -- this would be more plausible if it could take E85 or E100, and therefore get close to true carbon-neutrality, with all-EV use for regular commuting and the biofuel for when you have that occasional long range trip. But what would really make it more plausible is if you could buy one. The supply chain management here is embarrassing; Tesla turning out hundreds of thousands of 70 to 100Kw EVs a year and Toyota can't manage more than 5,000 of these 18Kw vehicles for the US market? That really doesn't pass the smell test.
@dalab9716
@dalab9716 3 года назад
E85/E100 and biofuel sounds like a pain to find, I'm showing few stations pumping it in L.A. This is a new entry into the market, and I'm sure production will ramp up in the future, I predict it will be successful, and hope I have the same good luck with my XSE Prime as I've had with my old Camry V6.

The purpose of sending pre-production versions of the RAV4 Prime to automotive journalists is obvious. It's not to sell vehicles; each and every one of the initial year's 5000 units is already pre-sold. For that matter Toyota's promise that the second year of production of 20,000 units available in the US will undoubtedly be sold out when the first 2022 version is available over a year from now. The strategy is obvious. Send a pre-production vehicle that's only one step away from a "concept" car to journalists for two reasons. (1) Draw potential customers to dealer showrooms where they can be sold the existing Rav4 Hybrid and (2) put the brakes on sales of existing and forthcoming Plug-in Hybrids from rival brands that are or will be readily available to consumers. At best it's a clever marketing move. At worst, it's an underhanded bait and switch scheme.
@dalab9716
@dalab9716 3 года назад
Or maybe it's a great car that you have to wait for. I found out about this and opted to pass on the existing 2020 hybrid that dealers were selling way over sticker. If people want this, they can order one for next year. I got on a waiting list in January and car is coming in November at sticker price. Longo Toyota, El Monte CA. Expensive, yes, but looking forward to it and hope it's a great experience.
