You do realize the most successful motorsports supra of all time used a turbo 4 cylinder. The car driven by Keiichi Tsuchiya had a 3S-GTE in a Supra and put down a perfect season in japanese touring car races.
I do realize the mandatory 43mm intake restrictor didn't flow enough air to make the inline-6 worth the weight, when the minimum weight for the series was about 2/3 the weight of the Supras for sale to the public. That successful 4-cylinder Supra also had the firewall cut up to move the engine back. The driver sat several inches back from the original seat position. The transmission tunnel was a big, square box. The suspension geometry has been completely replaced. I think that race car retained less than half of the original Supra structure and none of the driveline, so it doesn't seem like a very good comparison.
tsa1 1 The cost of manufacturing the Evo wasn’t worth it anymore. I’m sure it was a team of number crunchers that “don’t enjoy going above the recommended speed” that killed off the Evo.
If the 2L is 10 or 15K less... cheaper, for me is an easy choice, 2L wins. That specially if you just want a very nice car, and drive it respecting the road rules of the traffic department of your location. If you are one of those that visits race tracks, go with the 6L. I hope the price gap be reasonable, 10K or more... it will make sense if that is the gap in price.
One thing a lot of reviewers didn’t mention is that the four-cylinder transmission is mapped differently for whatever reason. According to one reviewer. He didn’t say anything about the six cylinder transmission if he was having the same problem down shifting. Anyone have any feedback on that?
Complaining about the weight of the driver was serious argument in my days of drag racing dirt bikes. Though I was of average weight and always ran a big bore 2 stroke so I didn't have to use them myself.
That 4 pot supra looked the deadest drive I’ve ever seen. And I’m sorry did he say the EU variant has only 192bhp??? That’s absolutely horrifying in 2020.
@@jerrybillings3039 Didn't you see the problem he was having with the 4-cylinder? I guarantee the 4-cylinder BMW, not a Supra, will blow a head gasket or the first gear is going to go out. Watch that video again and watch his hot lap in the 4-cylinder BMW, because I refuse to call it a Supra.
IMHO, if Toyota took the time to make specific tuning in the ECU, and a slightly bigger turbo, 300HP is possible from the 2.0L. It would easily make it more competitive in the market, as a 'bargain' for its price point. A 2JZ-GTE sans two cylinders.
I tried to let it play out and i still don't like it. Ugly af, horrible body lines, and im indifferent about the BMW engine. Waiting for the body kits to smooth it out. I feel so cynical for even saying it. I know a lot of MKIV supra owners and maybe it's my nostalgia creating the prejudice.
malakius might as well buy an frs for cheap and slam both in it. Plus this might sound ridiculous to some but I like the look of the frs/86 with a wide kit.
It will still get its ass handed by a Mustang GT which cost around the same or maybe little less. And with a tune those BMW 4 cyls are known to fly apart below 100k miles. While that V8 in a Mustang will run for 200k miles without much issues. Yea, toyota is desparately adding 4 cyl to Supra hoping that it will sell. But it won't because its terrible value for money. 6 cyl is also selling very poorly, because shitty value for money plus BMW shitty reliability. Those BMW engines are made of plastic.
LSV8 no it won’t, the 0-60 in the Supra in-line 6 is 3.9 seconds, vs 4.0-4.2 with the mustang, the Supra weighs 3400 pounds vs almost 3800pounds with the mustang, it would be a close race but the Supra would win by a little.
@@ZACH_95_ I am talking about the 4 cylinder Supra. Inline 6 Supra is $50k+ and is in same price as Mustang GT350 which again will kick the BMW Supra's ass again. Also at $60k you can get a C8 Corvette which will completely destroy this BMW Supra. In today's world this Supra is a hard sell, performance is not impressive at all for the price they are asking.
i dont like that there is a base supra....now this is like a mustang; you got the real version, than the poor mans version. This BMW is already cringe as it is being called a supra, but at least if you kept its rarity somewhat, it would carry more value, but now? they going to be everywhere like ecoboost stangs...
Theres The 4 banger, base 6 cylinder, premium 6 cylinder, and A91 edition. 4 banger was made for more balance, cheaper way to get a mk5,and was specifically made for those who weren't satisfied with it have the i6 that's in it so people could swap it's 4 banger out with a 2j if they wanted. The base supra is just the normal 6 cylinder supra(obviously)the premium has a few extra features but not much and the A91 is just a special edition with 2 colors(black and blue)being limited to 1000 cars per country.
Picked up my supra 2 weeks ago 3.0 prem red and i can tell you the thrill is just incredible. You get the looks, the honks, and the occasional cop wanting to hear the exhaust (yes happened to me on I-75 into Cincinnati.) Your main goal in this car is to get up to highway speed in a blink of an eye then scan for cops just so you can down shift it into 4th every 5 minutes then break…..Then repeat. Love the car and the memories i will make in it
The second gen supra was based on the celica platform, main difference being 4 cylinder vs 6. So ya, by a historical perspective the 4 cylinder would make sense being called a celica.
I realize that all these tests are in variable conditions, but I think the time for the Supra 6 is very impressive. For a front engine rear drive, it does very well.
Does 2 seconds really make that much of a difference off the track? If I'm just using it for normal driving I may get the 4 cylinder. Either way it's a heck of a car.
Yea I don't think it deserved that bad a review. That track was built for Karts, not cars. I have no idea why you would take a car to a kart track and expect to learn anything about it.
Toyota fanboys are so mad. Y'all should be thankful Toyota is even remaking the supra. For a while they didn't want their cars involved in street racing, and that's what stopped them from being in Forza and other racing games.
I like the yellow on the car, It would be interesting to see the price difference on the 6 vs the 4, if the 4 is cheap enough I can see it being a good option otherwise I’m not sure. Anyways I’m probably too poor for either version so I’m going to be looking at a Miata lol
The 4cyl is for the posers . Neither car is going to last with bmw tech under the hood. Good looking car with crap engineering. Save your money kids , and save your parents money too . These cars are junk. Toyota is the new Nissan.
Drag racing is such an American thing and one point but racing around the track is the real test in my eyes .... Other countries have corners 😂 Great video.
It's the obsession with horse power and majority of Americans have poor driving skills. I for one am all about the corners. I live around mountains, trust me, we have some really windy roads here in America too. Particularly on the East side where you have the Blue Ridge, Appalachian, and Smokey Mountains.
They were probably thinking everyone in the company who helped with the last Supra has retired, and they didn't want to spend a lot of money re-learning how to build Supras.
@biff s I was trying to say it politely but, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Toyotas other sporty car comes out of a Subaru factory. The "fast" Toyota that comes out of a Toyota factory is an automatic Camry. They seem to think a big (fake) grill makes it less of a soulless appliance.
So they give us a LESS powerful supra instead of more offering a more powerful race focused model that’s above the inline 6 model. I.E a 500hp model. this whole car stinks of just being a quick sale for Toyota. This 4cly is going to dilute the resale market and keep the price of the in-line six model much higher now then before was it was only the inline 6 on sale.
It's more or less going to stay the same with the 6 cylinder. It'll more than likely going to be price just like they did with the 2020s. Base being 50k,premium 55k,and A91 edition being priced 57k(just like they did with the launch edtion mk5s) and the 4 banger probably bring 10-15k less(just estimating this from other countries price difference between the 4 and 6 cylinder models)
Yeah I strongly detest the vlsd in my 370z. Even though it's technically a "lsd" is truly sucks at it's job. So in my next vehicle, this will be a VITAL selling point, because it's stupid if the car cannot put the power down or runs into traction issues because of a lack of a truly effective lsd setup.
Jay Stepp lol I hear that. Probably the same let downs I have with my GTI. Loves to one wheel peel all the way through second. Even my wife said “what good is this horsepower if you can’t use it?” That cut deep.
The 4 cylinder not getting a active LSD is ridiculous. Then there is the fact that Toyota still hasn't fixed the wind.buffering issue on either car and still don't offer a manual transmission option. Pass on both forms of Supra
The wind buffering is a weird one. I mean there's an easy aftermarket fix for it... 🤔 So I don't get why they wouldn't add it to the 2021 models as a factory fix.
No one will buy the 4cyl. Having that much less power, anemic sound, no lsd, crappy brakes, less grip, all that and not much of a discount on price. Pretty dumb.
Wait till people start tuning them 4 bangers it's a reason they made a 4 bangers people gonna be making crazy power with that car for cheaper !!! Remember this i called it first
"I'm buying a Toyota Supra to get that sweet 4 cylinder!" - Nobody, ever. It's like Toyota doesn't understand that half of the enthusiasm for the Supra is for the straight 6.
The 4 cyl is enough for street street driving and weekend Vermont foliage drives and staying alive to enjoy your car purchase or lease for years to come 🤣 I wouldn't be discouraged from getting a 4 because the 6 is in deed better in many aspects. What are the chances or how often will anyone be driving it and pushing its limits in the streets like in that track? Think about it!!! If you get a 4, you'll save money and still have an amazing car. As added bonus > you are driving a Supra which is now Iconic. I hear people saying swap this, swap that into it, it's a celica, it's a bmw, it's wimpy. You know what!!It's enough car. Just get it in Yellow or Red for sure!!
These day, a Supra making 194hp/255hp simply doesn't live up to the name. It's honestly embarrassing how Toyota have diluted the Supra legacy. Yes, a 4 pot is more eco-friendly but no one is buying a Supra to save the planet!
The 4 banger was made as a way to get a cheap mk5/a way of basing off the jgtc mk4 with the 3sgte 4 cylinder. And if people are stupid enough to buy 4 pot maros and stangs they'll do the same with the mk5.
Quit whining; I’m glad they’re giving us options. For people who might not be tracking their car much, the 2.0 makes perfect sense, and you’re saving $10k in the process
@@macbookpro57 But the low power versions aren't real Supras. They're for posers just like 4 and 6 pot Mustangs. It's like buying a standard BMW 3 series 'M' package, and trying to make out it's a sports car when it's not.
Duncan if that bmw 2.0l wasn’t a good engine, it’d agree, but that’s one of the better 2.0l 4 cylinders out there. I rented a new 3 series not too long ago with that engine, and those things are pretty quick, plus they’ve got a pretty nice exhaust note for a 4 banger. Just because a car doesn’t have 5 million horsepower, doesn’t mean it’s not a sports car. It still has great handling dynamics, and a 5 second 0-60 isn’t exactly slow...
@@Duncan94 wait...huh?lower power models aren't supras? So the 2jzge mk4 isn't a supra because it has less power than the 2jzgte mk4? Or the 7m and 1g powered mk3s aren't supras yet the 1jzgte mk3 is a supra just cause it has more power than the 7m and 1g powered supras? What kind of logic is this exactly? So your telling me a car like the mustangs with 4 and 6 cylinders aren't mustangs yet past gen models had 4 pots or V6s back then that were specifically called mustangs by ford themselves.
Even though I like the 6 cylinder I still will go with the 4 cylinder don’t need a lot of power just enjoy the make up of a 2021 Toyota Supra being back now we get to see in 2021 if the msrp deals will be better on the 2021 2.0 Supra because 2020 was not worth it it was OVER Killed with the price gauging big mistake 2020 couldn’t no one afford the 2020 Model I’m get the Yellow 4 cylinder now it would be amazing if it priced at $38,950-$40,000 depending if you got the slip differential upgrade with Little dash display but this what we need if they would did this I’m 2020 we would have a monstrous sale hope Nissian 400z comes out with 2 models a 4 cylinder and a 6 for 2022 because I don’t think It’s coming this year but who knows they keep supersizing us with EVERYTHING every since we Started 2020 let’s hope guys cloning and still living in space as A Martian is light years away because the new phone everything is boring being that they want raise our pay to a living wage that’s what everyone is America needs to demand rn a living wage
If only the Focus RS and the Supra had a chance to go head to head in the market and on a much larger higher speed track. Now which would you all have and why?
@japanwatchconnection Still does, ask Porsche - moving back to 6's for their Cayman and Boxter too, following a short move to 4's. Another great 4 is the flat 4 by Subaru....but for best performance the Supra is better with the 6.
Is this a BMW or a Toyota engine with the inline 6? I would like to see a breakdown on these cars of which parts are BMW and which are Toyota. I don't trust BMW for reliability. If the electronics or motor are BMW I am out.
You might improve the 4 cylinder a bit by using higher octane gas -- if Toyota's small GDI turbo is like the ones on my Fords. I've actually datalogged a phenomena where the engine pulls timing over about 4500 rpm on regular gas to prevent detonation. It makes a difference in feeling that pull up to the redline. This applies even to regular vehicles like the Ford Escape with the 2.0L turbo. But again, not sure how Toyota does engine management. Great video and great cars, thanks.
We shall bring back the supra name, we gave you a 6cylinder bmw engine, you complained, we gave you a 4cylinder, you complained, next in the line-up is a 3 cylinder hybrid....
Both motors are BMW's so this car is dead to me from the start. If i wanted my wallet drained by repair bills i would have just bought the Z4 to begin with so sticking german engineering in a Japanese car is a crime IMO. Between this and Toyota selling out the 86/BRZ it would seem they are incapable of engineering performance outside of the Lexus branding.
@CrazyLegsMcGee That's a battle that has been long lost at this point. "Hey is that a Supra Celica/Celica Supra?" has been going on since they both split. Honestly though depending on the gen, you get more "Nice FC" or god forbid "Sweet 240sx brah" and "Is that a prototype/concept car?"
200 lbs less all in the front. Im sure the 4 cyl version has much better turn in with less understeer. Oh and the flattening out feeling plagues that engine. I felt it in a 3 series I drove at sea level.
The entire car should be a Toyota instead of just the emblems. And why should it be so expensive. Toyota is huge worldwide it's just they're greedier than ever before.
I like how you try to slander the design, but literally all engines on the market use plastic parts for their timing chain systems. I really hate people like you. Makes people who don’t understand anything about how engines work think negatively towards something that isn’t even a negative.
I had an 04 Audi coolant system go to shit. I always used pink Audi vw coolant. Plastic water temp housing, plastic thermostat housing, plastic heater core hose fittings. None of the components can handle much more than 10 years of heat cycles before they go to shit. That's a fact not an opinion! My girlfriends 2010 BMW 545 complete garbage always had electrical issues. My 06 Subaru wrx all that coolant stuff is aluminum. My 08 Toyota 4runner aluminum no issues. BMW all plastic components that fail. Japanese cars are known for longevity, low cost of ownership. German cars are known for the opposite. That is a fact. If you own a modern German car that is out of warranty good luck I wouldn't touch it. My brothers 2015 audi rs5 with 25,000 miles just had the rear end go. The part was 7k plus bolts fluid labor it was a $10k job. Covered under warranty. Good luck with a German car that's out of warranty they are notoriously expensive for maintenance and repairs that's not an opinion I'm 40yrs old very mechanically inclined and I have owned and worked on both. German cars are very nice when they are new and under warranty if you dont mind rapid depreciation.
TheCompyshop Not all plastics are the same and BMW/VAG are known for self destructive cooling systems. Plastic parts in high performance high heat environment
@@CuongNguyen-kz4lv I'm talking about the European version with the 194 hp motor. You're paying extra for the styling and perhaps some other options not available on the 86. Plus, the Supra doesn't offer a manual.
@@amduser86 No, America is getting a different engine, I believe. Europe and the rest of the world will choose between 2 other 4 cylinder engines each with about 200 or 225 hp.
I don't care what anyone says, the 4-cyl Supra is still an awesome car. I've owned enough turbo fours to know that this setup can still yield big power and torque, as long as you're not used to driving ZL1 Camaro's and Shelby GT500's. Combine this with a lighter curb weight and all you're really losing is smoothness, sound and absolute power at the top of the rev range. A tune could easily yield 320-ish hp and a turbo upgrade/tune can yield 400-500 hp with no penalty in curb weight.
BMW: "Guys, we're losing money. Some old mechanic on RU-vid literally calls our cars 'endless money pits.' What do we do?" Also BMW: "Rebadge the Z4 as a Toyota Celica. That same mechanic raves about Toyotas!" That's a huge scam if you ask me. Hiding a rolling pile of junk BMW underneath a Toyota badge.
Toyota didn't hide that there was BMW parts in the car. Other than the fact that it's doing better than any of their rwd platforms have other than the 86.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 they can't now. Toyota had to explain to some customers why they were getting recall notices from BMW. The 86 is built by Subaru.
@@kyletrummel69 ok and? It was 7 cars in its first year. It's a new car if any multiple cars even if its a Toyota is going to get recalled regardless of who makes it.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 the bottom line is: Toyota builds a better car than BMW, and many people know that. My opinion, therefore, remains the same. Putting a Toyota badge on a BMW is deceptive. Of course, I'm sure many of the people who will actually buy one will have deep pockets anyway. So they won't care about repairs or resale value.
@@kyletrummel69 people with 20s have practically either voided it's warranty or have it tuned. These cars are going to be just like gtrs and are going to be hard to find without some kind of tune or mods done to the later on. The only thing with the 4cyl is itll likely still be a 40k car even with no options. I dont know many people who steal going to spend 40k on a 4cyl, 2 seater Toyota. They're already having a hard time selling the 6cyl 2020s.
