Your reviews are fantastic, and you are spot on, we do not need to know all the componentry and geometry numbers we call all look that stuff up ourselves. What none of can do, is have the ride experience and be able to make a comparison to other similar bikes. That is what we rely on and desperately need you for. There are so few reviewers/youtubers that do what you do that I am not sure you understand how rare you are. 90% of youtube bike videos are absolutely awful. All they do is give you geometry numbers and component levels/spec's that anyone can easily find out for themselves and or already are fully aware of. Another great, honest, very helpful review. Looking forward to the next one.
Nice honest review. You have never have got along with the fuel ex. I do think the al ex 8 is the value point for this bike and gets a lot of folks out on the trail.
Bingo. I wish I would have said those exact words in the edit.... dang it. That's sort of what I was trying to say.... If you're newer to the sport and don't want to spend a lot of money just yet, the Alloy version gives you a "name brand" TREK, and gets you out on the trail. Well said Bill.
I recently switched to a 2022 Spumpjumper EVO Comp from a 2018 Fuel EX 9.7, and I totally agree that the Stumpjumper climbs MUCH better & handles the chunk better. With the Fuel, I was always fighting the frt end lifting and struggled on climbs. The Stumpjumper climbs like a billy goat. The frt end stays planted. You can put your effort into just climbing, instead of climbing & trying to keep the frt end down. I was able to climb much better on the trails in NC, on our vac this yr. As for the descents, the stumpy just soaks it up better. Jumps are butter. The Stumpy in my experience was def the better bike for me...gave me more confidence for sure.
Yeah, I really liked the SJ evo... just wish it climbed as well as the Ripmo. That said, the geo and overall feel of the SJ evo was perfect for me and felt so comfortable jumping on that bike!! Glad you found a home on the evo!
The good part about this bike is the price; the fuel ex8 one of the best in it's category for price. And overall it's a safe bet with a good dealer network for warranty/ repairs etc
Weird that the back end was giving you trouble. I bought a 2022 9.7 and it's been a beast on climbs and descents, almost on par with my '16 Remedy. One thing that I've found is that running more sag in the rear shock makes it feel better on the descents, and the same with my Remedy.
@@mtbyumyum Maybe it's the terrain. My trails are similar to yours. Not super rough, but the descents are fast with lots of chatter. I've always run more sag on both ends to get a smoother ride on home trails, and a bit closer to factory recommended on smoother ones.
Riding the trail 429 enduro with Reynolds i9 hubs and absolutely loving it after seeing your video and doing multiple bike demos in March. The stiffness and descents are amazing.
I'm sure everyone appreciates your honesty in these reviews Jason. Your comparison of many bikes on the same trails is very useful. From memory there was a previous Trek EX you didn't like too; in fact I remember a horrible crash on it.🤬 This bike at their lower price point models is probably good for a lot of riders but at the carbon end sounds like there are better options if you can get access to them. I would be interested to see what you think of the Trance X 29 and the new 2022 Trance 29. I've been riding the Trance X 29 Pro 1 for almost a year and have found it a good all rounder certainly more forgiving than my previous 2017 Trance 27.5 Adv 1. For a lot of people outside the US like me getting access to purchase a Giant or Trek is just much easier than the more boutique brands and there are lower price point bikes for those that don't have money for carbon bikes. I have an EX 8. I noticed some rattling as well coming from the rear end. I checked everything as well, bolt tightness, wheel and shock setup. Finally I found where the rattling sound was coming from. It was the magnetic axle tool that the Trek bikes comes with. Once I removed it the rattling sound disappeared. Now I just carry it on the strap that holds a spare tube on the frame.
Thanks for this review. You put words to my “sense” of the bike. I have the 2021 Fuel EX 8, got in October 2020. I’ve put about 2000 miles on it. I was a new MTBer when I got it. I am starting to feel that my skills have outgrown the bike’s capabilities. I consistently blow through my rear travel. I’ve demo’d both the 429 and the Switchblade. Both were unquestionably better bikes than this. Waiting to demo an SB130. But, it has been a great bike to learn on.
I have a 2017 EX 9.8 and the seatstay bridge is *much* closer to the seatstay pivots/rocker. That wallow/drift/shift you're getting IMO is that carbon section of seatstay from the bridge to the rocker. There's a lot of potential kinetic energy that can be imparted into that area. I think that's where you're feeling the flex. Ther bearings are getting the brunt of that torsion.
I like my 2021 Fuel EX, but I think it needs an update. Both the Slash and the Top Fuel consistently get good reviews. I think the Fuel EX could kill it if it became more of a mini Slash.
I've a alu frame Fuel EX from 2018 before they changed the suspension design. I have NEVER been able to get the rear shock to behave. No amount of messing with the settings or volume spacers have worked. I wouldn't call myself a particularly accomplished rider but even I can tell the back end isn't right. The sort of riding I do (casual,smooth trails mostly) my bike suits me. I certainly would be a lot more disappointed if I dropped $9,000 on this model though. Thanks for your comment. Yep. I think as an entry level point for newer riders it's okay, although I would still opt for a Giant Trance or Ibis Ripley AF.... in any case, not at the higher price points.
I have a 2017 Fuel EX 9. I also just purchased a Revel Rascal. The Fuel EX is a great bike, but the ReAktiv is a climb focused shock. It is miserable on long descents. It basically packs down and has a tendency to sit very low in it's travel with successive hits, turning your bike into a squiggly hard tail. My ReAktiv broke and I put a Fox Factory DPS Evol on the bike and it was much better. Having the Revel Rascal now, I also didn't realize how much knock block affected my rides as well. The Fuel took me to great places, but Trek needs to give up on making the Fuel an XC/Trail bike and go full trail....
With the recent release of the 120/120 Trek TOP Fuel, I think that the 130/140 Fuel EX is obsolete. The TOP Fuel comes with the same wheels and tires as the Fuel EX and the geometry is more progressive than the Fuel EX. The Fuel EX should be updated to a 140/160 travel bike with more progressive geometry. That's the missing model in Treks line up. I would love to see a review of the TOP Fuel? I have a Trek Full Stache (which is the 29+ version of the Top Fuel) and the rear suspension is weird. It has a lot of lateral play. The tail wags the dog. And, the suspension falls through it's travel very easily. I've found that 15-20% sag on the wide open compression switch makes the bike perform much better both uphill and downhill. Once I figure that out, my ride experience improved immensely. Putting some tokens in the shock would likely also help but I haven't tried that. I also installed a stiffer stouter rear wheel which reduced the tail wagging to some degree. The stock rear wheel was a noodle.
@@JamesLG4 I don't think that the Fuel EX is a bad bike. I just think that there are many better bikes in that rear travel range, 120-140mm. I think that Yum was spot on when calling out the EX's faults. The rear end has a lot of lateral play and it falls through it's travel to easily. The geo is a little old school compared to other bikes. and they are not particularly light weight. However, the less expensive models make great budget beginner bikes. There are many better bikes like the Yeti SB 130 and Specialized Stumpjumper.
Totally agree. For the price point there’s zero chance I’d be buying a Trek. They make some great bikes, as you said, but the competition in that price point and caliber of bike is incredible. SO many amazing bikes available. The Pivot, Ibis, and Yeti just outclass this bike for similar dough.
Finally you are testing Fuel ex. Im watching you chanel from begining and I was waithing for this review. Ok, so I have Fuel Ex 8 XT for 2020 and couple of things I would like to mention. 1st that bike is more than 2 years old and it is entering in 3rd year, it deserves update and Trek should make new model. They updated Top Fuel twice but didnt Fuel Ex which i find weird, considering that Fuel Ex is one of their most selling models. 2nd about that rear end and shock in general. Reactive shock SUCKS because during repetitive hits its producing noise like something is loose...clunking noise. I experience that when im going down the stairs or a lot of rocks close to each other. Rear shock and kinematicks of that bike is on the linear side, so it should be riden with 25% of sag, not more. 3rd I think that 2.6 Bontrager tires are taking soul from that bike. Majority of testers are complaining on them. I didint change mine, but im planing to put 2.4 DHR II front and rear. Im also planing to put RS Super Deluxe ultimate in the rear instead of Fox dps reactive. I dont have oportunity to test and ride as many bikes as you do, but I believe that in that price range 6-9 000 usd/eur Fuel Ex is bad choice, because like I said it is "old" and in bike industries we see new bikes and geo every months... Alu models are IMO better options to buy and upgrade. In terms of geo I would like to see on next generation: steper STA and little slacker HTA, piggyback rear shock, 150mm fork and threaded BB and NOT much longer, because it is trail bike so it should be nimble, so max 10mm grow in reach. Fuel EX 9.9's can be had for $7,500 in the XO1 build. Not sure if that changes anything from what you recommend, though. I was *this close* to buying one last spring because it was pretty much all that was available in my size in my area, but on my way to buy it I stopped into another shop by chance and there was a new Switchblade in the color and build I'd want. I didn't know much about them, but I watched your review on my phone in the parking lot and went back in to buy it. I LOVE my Pivot, and your review of this Trek just confirms I made the right choice. (I came off a 2017 Fuel EX9, for context).
I think you're pretty accurate. The amount of money puts this Fuel in a class of better frame and chassis bikes. Check out the mid range if applicable to your region
While I own the 2021 EX8, I have to agree with your sentiment that you'd buy other bikes over the EX9.9 as you tested. To be fair, I got my bike as it is what I could afford, and if I am honest, for what I paid for it I stole the dam thing, and it will do 95% of what I want from a bike just fine, and then some. IF i had the extra cash to get an EX 9.9, I wouldn't do it either. I'd personally be looking at a Santa Cruz Hightower in the Alloy 'S' version over the carbon trek EX, as it's cheaper, is my personal 'drool bike' and brand, and I feel that it is a more versatile bike overall from where I sit, and well, I don't need or even want a carbon frame to feel good while riding - I am old, fat, and alloy frames have done me well for 20+ years without fault, and while I am well aware that carbon frames are stronger on the whole, as I keep bikes for many years (as I am not the sort of wasteful individual to replace a good thing 'just because'), I trust welds over fatigued glue when 'time' is being taken into account as part of my buying decision! (as I have yet to see someone going hard on a carbon frame after 10-15 years without issue - as those with carbon frames, generally sell/replace them every 5min for something newer and 0.003% better, so your never going to know)
@@mtbyumyum Once upon a time, alloy frames were the 'exotic' option over regular steel frames, they are tried and true from where I sit (my first MTB was a hard tail GT with a steel frame some 25+ years ago)
Totally agree and the bontrager components do not hold up well. As for the rear shock I figured it was just me weighing 215lbs but you seem to have similar sentiments about it.
Yeah. I've set up a lot of bikes over the years and I've never had a bike feel like this. I've also blown several shocks in my life and this shock was not blown...

I have a Fuel ex 9.8 2021 model and so far I love it!! I haven't had the problem u had with the backend though this is my first full sus so maybe if I rode a different full sus I'd understand a little more!! But the bike itself is a great all rounder...can climb, descend or just a casual cycle in the mountains.
Yes. I rode the Ranger 4 days in a row in November of 2020. Every time I tried to film that bike I had a problem... too cold or bad audio... in the end I decided not to publish the video because the audio was too bad... who knows, maybe I'll edit the video and publish it anyway. It's very very similar to the Ripley in almost every way.
I have had a few Trek Fuels over the years. My 2014 EX8 felt flex/wollowy in the rear. Had a 2017 EX9, really did not like it for the same reason you mentioned on the 2018. It also pedaled like I was in mud all the time. Sold it after a year. Good honest review. There are better options out there,

I had a chance to demo the same build EX, and the first thing I thought was “it’s a safe buy”. It felt comfortable and familiar, but something was missing. Thought you described that part well. I ended up falling in love with the Orbea Occam M10. Felt like it was a better value, and had the characteristics I was looking for. Have you spent any time on an Orbea?
I have the 9.8 version and love the bike. I tuned both the shock and fork with volume spacers to fit my style of riding (mostly midwest punchy single track with a yearly PNW trip) which I have done with all my previous bike. I really like the less "progressive" geometry than the enduro style of bikes, which tend to be too sluggish for fly over territory riding. I am sure the next generation will be more gravity oriented which is too bad.
Like you, I was excited about the less "enduro" geo that a lot of companies are putting on every bike regarless of suspension travel or style of bike... within the next few years even xc racers will be riding 64 degree hta lol
I have a Gen 5 Trek Fuel EX and I love the performance that I get out of it. However,* mine has an aluminum frame (which I prefer). Also, I’ve upgraded almost all of the components. I have the new Fox Float rear shock and a Fox 36 (factory) in the front with 150 mm travel. It handles the climbs and the descents masterfully. Also, I do not get any noise from my bike at all. I’ve seen a number of RU-vid videos comment that the carbon version can be “chattery.” It sounds like an issue with how some of the bike shops assembled them. Also, the Aktive shock wasn’t such a big hit and it has since been abandoned by Trek. ✌️
If you look up that rear shock on Reddit, you'll find plenty of guys swapping it out for an off-the-shelf Fox unit. I think Fox even has a recommended rear tune for the FEX if you call them up.
What are the advantages of buying a bike from a bike shop that isn’t a consumer direct company? Just seems like you’d want that support should anything go wrong. Thanks for the great videos!
I bought the 2021 Trek Fuel Ex 9.7 for $3300, but I then upgraded the brakes to Hope Tech 4 E4 - the bike was supplied with the (extremely grabby) crappiest 4-pot brakes that Shimano make. I also put carbon bars on - this made a noticeable difference. I also put a 34T chainwheel on but this is not really needed. I also changed the shifter and cassette to Sram GX (you also need to change the driver!) and this made a huge positive difference - NX shifter is not good. I also made sure to take time to set up the rear shock properly (front suspension was easy). The 9.9 makes no economic sense.
Rear triangle flex is always a deal-breaker for me. I don't care how well the rest works. Flex sucks on fast rough corners and on off-camber turns especially. I'n glad you point out the negatives.
You try a different shock? Lots of people hate Reaktiv. Used to own a Fuel and demo’d later models. Comfortable pedaler, but the rear end gives up its travel too easily like you said.
To add on my last comment could you try to review the “Spot” bikes? The reviews I’ve seen everyone’s claiming that they are equal or better climbers than Ibis & Pivot And a lifetime carbon frame warranty. Thanks

Wow, thanks for sticking around so long! Yeah, I really try and stay positive about this bike test ride and review videos but there was no getting past this one... After more than a week on the bike, it didn't have a blown or bad shock, set up was good and the bike never got any better at higher speeds over rough terrain...
Great reviews as always Jason. I too have owned a few fuel exs and there definitely are a lot better bikes for similar money in my opinion. That back end feel might have something to do with their abp (active braking point ). That gave me issues on my last one and the knock block is one of the most useless features out there. It also makes it difficult to swap out the cockpit.
In light of trying some new "downcountry" bikes, is your Ripley still relevant? I'm about to build up a light bike to compliment my SB130LR and keep coming back to the Ripley as a frame even though it's maybe 3 years old. Is this crazy? Is there something else you've found in your exploration that you would build on going forward... or is the Ripley just that good?

In fact, I'm more concerned they'll mess the next ripley up by making it too "enduro" and honestly, I've heard Ibis isn't changing the ripley this year anyway so your good to go! When I was in the market for a bike a few years ago you suggested the giant trance (right after the redesign in 2017 or 2018) but my local shop had a specialized Enduro 29 that was new old stock for super cheap that I went with and kicked myself ever since. It was a great bike, just not for me. Mojo sounds right up my alley!
Interesting review, I watched this thinking I would hear “If you bought a Pivot Trail 429, this bike is even better!” I bought the Pivot and love it, wish I would have got the Fox 36 enduro model though. All that aside, this honest review is appreciated, sounds like a bike was rushed before it was completely sorted out with that rear suspension.
Great review. I recently built up a med Rascal based on its moderate geometry and fit. It's been way too rainy and wet here to get in any real riding since I finished the build. In your review, you compared the Trek to the big name bikes. How would you compare the Trek to the Revel Rascal? Thanks!

I bought a Trek Fuel Ex 9.8 through EP purchase as an employee over the summer. I ride the rear end with max volume spacers, recommended sag and only in the middle compression position with fastish rebound. This setup really helps the fuel’s read end keep pace with the Fox 36 upfront. This makes the bike feel awesome in blueish and black terrain.However, I have cracked the frame 3 times in the last 10 months, so I cannot recommend this bike.
I bet the issue you had with the rear end is the shock, those reactiv shocks just can't handle repeated hits. Were you running it fully open or in the middle setting? I've always found them best in the middle for descending, fully open just feels undamped. In the end though on my Fuel EX I swapped it out for a regular shock (Cane Creek DB air IL) and it transformed the bike. The Trek shock gimmicks are a waste of time and only there as a sales talking point I think. Nice review otherwise tho 👍
Interesting. There have been a number of comments here about this reactiv shock... I actually rode the bike with the shock in the middle setting on the lower sections of trail and I didn't have a problem... just figured it was the slower speeds and tamer terrain.
@@mtbyumyum Yep the open setting is pointless to be honest. Shame Trek don’t just fit a stock shock and tune the damping to suit the bike's kinematics. Mine climbs really well with the CC DBAir fully open so the basis of the bike is fine.
Love your channel thanks for the reviews. I was hoping you would throw your leg over this one again. I saw your last one on the fuel EX knew you had issues with it. This one has been on my shortlist. Throwing a leg on over it in the parking lot it does feel more nimble to me than the Stumpjumper. I picked up an aluminum Stumpjumper real cheap but it was way too small for me. I put about 150 miles on it before I resold it. My biggest complaint for it was riding over rooty sections on 17 - 20 mile rides just beat my wrist to death. Maybe a stump jumper a bit larger and with better bars than the aluminum. Thanks for the heads up I’ll keep the stump jumper in mind now. A common theme I’m hearing is everyone including me is hoping you will very soon ride the new top fuel.
I really enjoy my epic evo. I haven't tried the new Stumpy, but the FSR layout seems outdated and poorly optimized. I would try the carbon flex stay with carbon bars. Bars dampen vibrations at the wrist, and I think Specialized bars on are the stiffer end with Renthal. What bike did you ride that was good? It's hard to beat the value of a Ripley AF. Not a big Trek fan, but I am looking forward to his opinion of the new Top Fuel!
I’ve had a 2020 EX 8, for almost two years, and I love it. The spec of the 8 is great for the price point (only different between the 2020 8 and 9.8 is carbon frame and wheels and the 36 vs 34 fork, with a $2k price difference). I do agree with you on the amount of rear travel that gets used, always thought it was just me, but maybe it’s the bike. I’d be curious to see what you would think of the EX 8 vs the Ripley AF in an aluminum frame shoutout.
@@mtbyumyum I've got a 2020 9.7 Fuel EX with upgrades (full GX rear end with 108 pawls, carbon wheels and better dropper from 9.8). It doesn't have the better rear shock that the 9.8 has. The rear end does have issues. I go through almost all of the travel but only about 50% of the fork. But coming from an XC bike (Trek HiFi) I love the trail geometry. It's amazing how much better bikes ride today with the new geometries. I test rode a Ripley and would have bought it but I stayed loyal to my LBS who sells Trek.
My old bike was a trek Marlin 5 loved it, it doesn’t have knock block, I demoed a trek remedy over the summer that had knock block and I hated it, I see the purpose but don’t think it’s worth it
I had a 2017 fuel ex 7 it was on a runout sale it was a good bike but thats all it was just didn't seem to get on with it.sold it and got a 2020 trance 2 29er and I love it .its just better all though fuels been changed since but wouldn't buy another .Am in my early 60,s looking at a rail though 🤔later in the year friend of mine has one and loves his .
Nice. I always recommend the Trance to people. The Rail is cool but I wouldn't buy one today... geo is dated and there are better bikes for the money.... RM Altitude comes to mind.

this opinion is a few years old but after lots of my own testing I wound up on a sb130. Its fantastic and a bike I can ride anywhere even on big jumps. I wound up doing some upgrades and wound up putting a 140mm fox factory float x2 and a factory 38 160mm turning it into the lunch ride edition. it also been a lot of other upgrades, it started out life as the gx or low end trim model. Living in the mountains in Colorado that bike can truly do it all. However I really liked the 140 27in bike as well when I demoed it last year.
I’m getting a ‘22 FEX 8 next week and now I’m spooked after this review, but then again I got a pretty good deal on it. I Will try to assess its capabilities with objectivity and hopefully it doesn’t disappoint me. Great video
What size of bike is recommend for someone that is 6'8" with a 37" vertical leap? Also keep in mind they are the 1993/1994 2 time, back to back BBVG champion.

The issue is likely the reaktiv tune on the shock. If you replace with a standard tune shock it will be much more progressive, with better pedal platform, more stability, and best of all it wont blow through travel unnecessarily. I have no idea why trek still uses reaktiv because its trash.
I had a 2019 slash with the rock shox reactive. It felt stiff and bottomless so I was a little surprised by this review. I always assumed the EX would be similar.
Ok I’ve ridden this bike and Tallboy back to back and this trek was not even close. I’m a trek fan too with a trek TT bike and trek gravel bike, but no way EX climbs good at all.

@@mtbyumyum I’d love to ride the element. 429 was nice too, but rear end didn’t feel as buttery to me or as confidence inspired. I can’t even find a Ripley in a several state radius to ride.
I’ve got the Trek Fuel ex 8 xt. Previously had the SC Tallboy 1st gen. I’m an x motocrosser desert rat. Bikes have improved SO MUCH over the years. I picked up from my LBS - they warranty locally and have all the knowledge and parts (typically). I love the bike so far. Didn’t have the luxury of trying a bunch of bikes back to back. I don’t mind plowing over everything. Not racing and am 60+. Wish i had more time to ride. Keep the reviews coming like this.
Jason love your reviews but as the outlier on the Fuel as compared to Freehub, Bike, Enduro it would have been nice to see in your review knowing what if anything you did to determine if there was an issue? Seems to me you were not invested in this bike beyond a few rides and then dropping a review. Not sure who spends this kind of coin and just flips the bike if they have issues without even seeing a good mechanic or Trek dealer? No formal mention of wheel tension checking, rear Suspension or shock tune. All things I would have done after the first ride. The shock tune or issues maybe that takes longer to access but flexy, odd sensations - you deal with that asap before something expensive happens. I have 2 Treks in my Garage a Checkpoint SL and a Remedy 9.8, best two bikes i have ever owned. Perfect they are not but definetly stand out performance and durability over other major name bikes I've ran and when I have had issues they are dealt with quickly and without hassle. I'm keeping the Fuel on my demo list and if I have simular observations/issues I will happily come back to you and this review to eat humble pie. Cheers
Yeah. I wish I had more time to put into this channel and my videos.... There were no problems with the rear wheel, spokes or any other easily noticeable problem. The shock wasn't blown and after several rides I really believe I had it set up correctly. The other reviewers you mentioned on RU-vid likely don't have a day job. I spend 40-50 hours a week at work and fit these test ride and review video's in during my "free" time. This was the best I could do with what I had time for.... trust me, nobody wishes these reviewers were better more than me... the reality is, I make next to nothing on this RU-vid channel and I'm constantly debating whether it worth the time. When you get a chance to demo the fuel be sure to video it, edit it and uploaded to your channel so I can check it out! Thanks Chris

Better in every way. More stable at higher speeds. Excellent grip and confidence.... the new Stumpjumper is the real deal and will give the Pivot Trail 429 a run for it's money...
It was a non issue... never felt too flexy for me compared to other bikes out there... T429 is probably stiffer than the stumpy and ripley... I loved riding the stumpy.

LoL. Dude, if its from the pros closet, the bikes probably clapped out, thats why it felt like crap. Also, is that a crack by your knock block on the top tube? 🤷🏻♂️
@@mtbyumyum yeah I'm not sure why trek insist on reaktiv. For climbing it does well but anything remotely requiring bigger hits or fast charger and it's overwhelmed quick. Plenty off people add volume spacers but that doesn't fix the problem. dpX2 changed the fuel ex for me
