My formative biking years were the early 70s, during which the British bike industry committed suicide and was totally outclassed by the Japanese competition. If someone had told me then that come 2020 Triumph would rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of that industry and produce a middleweight bike that "destroyed the [Japanese] opposition" I would have laughed in his face. Nice one, Triumph.

And the punchy Ninja 650 with fairings is a better commuting machine. The Honda CB/CBR are faster. Not sure where Trident slots in with such an established trio of competition.

tal e qual...quando vi o modelo ate achei estranho comparar com uma mt e nao uma xsr e no que toca nesses modelos acho que nem é pela conução mas sim pelo cenario...o acabamento e qualidade deve encostar a minha 07 a um canto na boa que os plasticos da trident nao fazem barulho como os da 07 e os comutadores devem ser de jeito mas epah a 07 é brincalhona e para se ter uma mota "fraca" em termos de potencia prefiro ter algo divertido em vez de bonito xD

Was looking at getting a used 675R as an upgrade from my DRZ400SM... But long term triumph reliability seems very mixed online... Now I'm eyeing a GSX-S 750

You won't regret it - they never get mentioned in this category but are more powerful than most of the mid range bikes and can get a 2015-16 750 for 4000-4500 dollars. Suzukis are screaming deals.

Nige, I understand your review. In 2009 I traded my ZX-6R for something more sensible. A new Street Triple, I failed, it is a hoot, still got it now (now that is a testament to the original bike) I paid around € 8k back then, that makes the Trident a bargain. Street Triple has got more expensive & complicated, Trident is a great entry performance mid size bike.

I'm 192cm, I think I'd look weird on this bike no ? I'm struggling to find naked bikes or/and modern classics that fit my size where I don't look like I'm on a tricycle... Any recommendations ?

@@elvisthewart670 I have a few bikes and they all feel good on the day (until the fat twat in the white wig told me I had to "stay home stay safe"). Test ride, if it suits you, happy days. I test rode the xsr 'cuz journo's rave about anything on a sun kissed bike launch with free booze so needed to make my own mind up. Nige just sparked my initial interest and 44Teeth makes great RU-vid content with 1 foot firmly planted in the comedy category. Would you buy a bike based on Les Dawson's opionion? If I was happy on a C90 then I'd care less about the views of a stranger down the pub on a Panigale with chicken strips. Good luck 👍

This does look good! An mt07 with upgraded suspension, brake lines, exhaust and slipper clutch is also mega fun and mega capable, and still cheap.

Great review of a beautifully styled 'budget' bike. Triumph has proven that it doesn't cost any more to make an aesthetically pleasing motorcycle rather than typically 'fugly' styling when it comes to reasonably priced bikes. Bravo.

My 80s Kawasaki GT550 was 58bhp and 221kg wet - i looked it up. What it didn't have is a very long list these days. The youth of today are spoilt....and slow....lol Be grateful.

I think a big real world question to ask is whether its worth ponying up the extra cash to buy this or a lightly used Street trip 675R from a few years back. I dearly miss my 675, and was hoping this would be a good replacement when they eventually hit the 2nd hand market. The original street triple was in itself a very approachable bike for beginners and experienced bikers alike, it feels like this bike is a slightly updated and detuned version of what was. No revolutionary steps forward.

I know what you mean about these tier of bike feeling small. I got a Z650 as a courtesy bike for my Z800 and it felt (and looked) like a 125. I then swapped it for an XSR700 which was waaaaaay better and felt more "proper". Then back to the Z800 and mmmmmmnomnomnom...

Good value at base price but once you get into the option list, add quick shifter, heated grips and the price is not that appealing any more, I would spend the extra and get the new Ducati Monster

I thought the XSR would be a nice way back into biking. But the suspension and brakes didn’t inspire confidence. Sold it for a Street Triple after 800 miles.

Think the cb650 has better suspension, brakes... specially with the big piston fork and it has like 14 more HP but it's 10kg more.

Whilst this is undoubtedly a great bike and well priced I can't help but think that Triumph have missed a trick by not also offering a half-faired version a la MT07/Tracer 700 to appeal more to the commuter market. Maybe there's one in the offing?

Oh yes this bike is going to sell like crazy, but it is not going to take out MT-07 top place. In any case if something this is a late move from Triumph, they should have done this 3 years ago ... but the Bike is indeed a contender to the MT-07 absolute dominance on this class.

Great review, Statham! Can we go back to analog tachs on naked bikes, please? Digital gauges look like shit, and you can't see them in direct sunlight. MT-07/09, XSR 900, CB650R, now this... all bikes I'd love to own, but I don't want to stare at those digital boxes.

This looks nice, I'm not a fan of the dash and plate holder at the wheel. Middleweight competition is tough, I think/hope Triumph will sell a lot of these. Now I hope that Suzuki brings out something fresh to the segment. My favorite middleweight naked street bike remains the CB650R. I wouldn't rule this one out without trying it though. Would you say the most "budget" thing on the bike are the brakes? Cheers

Why! oh! why! are the arse ends of modern motorcycles not designed to carry a pillion in comfort, most of my pinions are not super thin supermodels nor are they ten ton Tessie. But all complain of why not a comfort factor. No I don't need a Harley Street glide etc.

I think this bike is what would happen if a Street Triple 660 and a Street Twin got together and had a "love child" bike It has elements of "retro" Triumph. Slightly rounded tank, single round headlight, round clock (but digital !), mixed in with lots of Street Triple. Only thing I would say, it looks like it could do with bar end mirrors :) Triumph are going to sell a lot of them.

I've watched all you Brits review this bike on the same event in Spain and all I can say is GET A GOOD CAMERA! JESUS! BLUR BLUR BLUR. GIVE ME A FUCKING MIGRAINE! Did they give you all the same shit equipment or what? Never buy the first year production. Beta version. New engine? Watch the forums light up with problems. Want rock solid? Get any version of the Kaw 650. It's only been around a couple decades, like the Suzuki... Duh.

Nice vid as usual. Lets hope Triumph have addressed their quality issues. As much as I want to love this bike, I got rid of my Tiger as the electrical issues and reliability issues were just unacceptable. The trident looks awesome and sounds it.

I’m sure it’s a great bike but no wonder Trumpets are so expensive if they are shmoozing journos on Tenerife. In my mind Triumph has lost it. They’ve concentrated on crappy lardy pseudo retros and played on their imaginary heritage for far too long. Maybe this bike is them trying to correct that but for me to buy not Made In England they’ll need to try harder. Agree with the comments about the mt07. It’s far too cramped.

This new fad of bikes having micro-transactions is getting out of hand. The throttle is ride by wire yet the quick-shifter costs extra when really it's just a bit of code. How long until paint is an optional extra.

Paint as been as optional extra on a lot of bikes for a long time, Most bikes have a colour option that costs a bit more these days especially BMWs.

Nah. SV650 or MT-07 for me in the 650-690 class. A twin just provides more character and bark, since outright horsepower is not what the class is about.
