Thoughts on the 2021 VW Crosssport. DISCLAIMER our commute suddenly went from 10 miles per day to 50 miles per day about 1 month after delivery. We were putting $7.50 a day in the gas tank.

Been a vw tech for 29yrs. I am a fan of the brand. So my opinions are bias of course. After watching your video, I am surprised you are expecting higher fuel mileage....just my opinion! Trading it in after 4 months....you definitely have finances the rest of us don't have! Cheers!

Just a $1000 .. I find that hard to believe. So you drive the car for 4 months, sold it for $1000 less than what you paid for.. meaning you paid $250 a month !! No way. .. that means the dealer now has to sell it over the original purchased price to make a profit. OR, sometimes they make it look like they are paying you a lot fir your trade-in, but the jack up the price of the new car. But there is no way that you only lost a $1000.

Researching on the gas mileage of a vehicle is the easiest part before buying!!! Looks like you dint do any research before buying this vehicle and then put the blame on the vehicle!!! Atlas is a heavy vehicle and more solid than a v6 honda pilot. So if you want a solid/heavy SUV, V6 engine and GOOD gas mileage, ha ha ha, thats not the right combo!

@@laurenzdeganos9875 have you had a new Honda Pilot? That’s what I traded in for an Atlas. Fit and finish on interior panels was shit, pop the hood and welds were very sloppy on body panels. I paid for the Ex with leather and Navi. The Nav after multiple updates would project my location to the side of the highway on the screen as though the car was floating around the screen. I performed several map updates and never got a resolution. The finish dye was coming off the passenger front seat which had less wear than the driver seat. That was my fifth Honda. Over the years I’ve had seven VW and all have been good to me so long as I stay on too if maintenance. The pilot carpet was also awful, you couldn’t vacuum grass and dirt out easily and it would retain debris even after a full detail. In short the Honda did not impress

I have a 2018 Atlas, MSRP was 50k. Super comfortable, cruises smooth - have got over 30mpg round trip in the mountains- to the beach on the highway - If I want to go fast, I jump in the F150, if I want to be comfortable, I take the Atlas. Love the Atlas! The vehicle has been very reliable. Edit: one thing I did not like, was a common issue, and is the fact it does not come with a spare at all, let alone a full size spare. Well if you’re looking for gas mileage then an suv with a 6 cylinder would be out of the question. We recently upgraded from a Chevy equinox, that had great fuel mileage ( 41mpg best on highway). But it had a 1.4 L turbo. It was selected awd which was nice but as far as towing it had like a 1000lbs. But you can’t even compare the two next to each other. So you need to decide what you want, a fuel efficient vehicle or something with the roominess, towing capacity, and the other options available of the atlas. We agree that the fuel mileage is less but overall we love it. We own a 2021 atlas cross-sport R- Line edition $ 58,000 sticker price. This vehicle has everything and we couldn’t be happier. Btw we live in Wisconsin too…lol

Don’t listen to low iq people who have no idea about anything. The gen3 is leaps & bounds better then gen 1 & 2. It’s essentially a gti engine & even has the same is20 turbo. Many examples have already exceeded past 200k miles & others who are tune’d have over 100k hard miles on them. Most of us have to deal with carbon build up at around 100k miles & that is bc of direct injection. If you need more power without sacrificing the warranty, I would look a jb4 from burgertuning. I would join the jb4 VW Facebook group as well. You have same power & more torque then the vr6 just by using this piggyback tune. The most imp things to maintain is 1. Oil changes no more then 5-7k miles depending how you drive it. Transmission service needs to maintained & also the haldex since you have 4wd needs to be serviced as well. I would service the haldex when you change the oil in the trans. Good luck, keep researching & enjoy it!

I own and operate a 2021 Cross Sport SEL Premium and manage 19-21 mpg in the city by using the manual shift to keep the rpm's under 2,000. Many time on level ground I start up in second gear and quickly shift to 3, 4, 5 & 6th gear. You can watch the mileage from last start soar to 18>19>20+. It also takes a light accelerator foot at stop lights and docile driving style. The car does a very low gear ratio in first, second and third which helps with towing but you can minimize those low gears with manual shifting when driving in town. Paddle shifters would be much more convenient but VW doesn't want get too sporty. Hope this helps someone........

Small advice: read the video description before commenting. Also, as i stated in video the used car market is WHITE hot right now. We sold it back to dealer (not trade in just sold) for only a loss of about $1000. The dealer sold it above MSRP 4 days later. Our fuel savings on our new vehicle will pay for the loss in about 7 months. Over 5 years of ownership with our replacement we will save roughly $5000 in fuel. Stay tuned for our replacement!

I don't know how you are calculating!! Let's say you drive 50 miles a day with gas price at $3.20. if your mpg is 20, that would add up to $8 a day or $2400 fir let's say 300 days. If you can get a magical gas engine SUV that goes 30 miles per gallon, your daily drive will cost you $5.30 or $1590 per 300 days. That is a saving of $810 per 300 days ( roughly a year) . In 5 years, your saving will be at $4050. And again, that's assuming you can get 30 mpg from your new SUV. Please tell me how you did your calculation? BTW, I am still not buying that the dealer purchased the car back fir $1000 less than what you paid for it just 4 months ago because the market has been red hot for over 4 months. 19 mpg is pretty good for a non-turbo SUV box with an automatic transmission. I have a 2015 Sportwagen TDI with a manual and it averages 47 mpg around town and 55 mpg highway. It has a little less cargo space than the Atlas Cross Sport and cost less than half as much. When traveling I can go over 700 miles on its 13.5 gallon tank before needing to refuel. Where I live when you buy a new vehicle you have to pay sales tax and the first year registration cost. For an Atlas Cross Sport it would be over $3000. So selling a new vehicle after 4 months would be throwing away the sales tax and registration to just do it again. At $4/gal and 19 mpg you could go over 14,000 miles with that $3000.

I love the driving, the ride, super quiet and smooth, and more........ and BUT the efficient should be better, I think 18 MPG in 2022 is really bad performance compare with same size V6 cars, I had Lincoln, Mazda, GMC...all of them V6, this one is way bellow them. Obviously the time could not be worse to get this car, oh boy, going to refuel and so often, it is a pain in the neck...I don't think that we will trade it, I think we will get used to it, but If the gas reaches 6 or 7......probably I will change my mind Lol. Amazing how they "lose" things as they come out with newer models. We bought a 2019 Atlas SEL Premium. The rear seats have little flip handles near the headrest to "pull" and the seat goes down. The middle seats have handles on the side of the seat. I now have 3 cars (including the VW). 2011 Minivan and a 09 Jeep (which is daily driver even though it gets 10 city, 15 hwy thanks to all the mod's I've done to it). I knew all about the MPG before going in but watching how it does in crash tests sold me. We drive the Atlas on long trips mostly. It's almost 3 years old, 16k miles. I get 25hwy, 16/17 city. It's quiet, smooth, fun to drive and it's my 4th VW. Before that, had the 2013 Passat TDi SEL P. That would be a great car for your fuel use but IMO, for your family use, think of a minivan. I've seen young families with one kid swear they wouldn't be seen dead in one. Then they get 2 and complain their ford edge just doesn't hold all the "Stuff" they need it to carry. They rent a minivan for a trip. Upon return, they end up getting one. I've been driving a minivan since 1993 and even though I have the Atlas, there is not a family vehicle for the price that can beat them. Get a hybrid. Good MPG and you will never complain about needing cup holders ever again. And if you need to haul a few 4x8 sheets of plywood, no problem.

Taking it in for brakes and inspection soon. Changed air filters myself. I don't keep tires at 35psi, it's around 40. Once in a while the engine auto start/stop deactivates due to braking habits, which eventually resets after a couple days regular driving. If this happens to you, don't panic. The airbag sensors are.... very sensitive, so keep floor areas under seats clear. Very spacious vehicle. Great for long road trips.

Good point, Michael. The mileage is clearly indicated on the window sticker. I knew it would not be fuel efficient when I bought our 2019 Atlas SE/Tech. In our case being semi-retired, we only put 7,000 miles/yr. on it and buy our gas at Costco so it's not costing us nearly as much as daily commuting would. We love the interior space and V6 engine. I agree the interior materials are not very premium. Then again, we paid just under $37K back before prices went nuts. It's my wife's car and she loves it so that's all that counts.

Good Video. I really wanted one of these having had a Passat for almost 10 years and 170,000 miles. Unlike you, the dealer wouldn't deal with me and wanted full MSRP. I ended going back to Ford and got a 2019 Edge ST performance package and like you I needed the tow hitch and AWD. The Edge has a twin turbo and quite fast. I am getting about 21-22 mpg with mostly city driving. Haven't had it on a road trip yet. My Passat, with V6 had to run premium so I am happy the Edge does not. Totally true about the gas consumption of this car, it’s a gasoline gourmand even in eco-mode. I was surprised and a bit terrified the way it drinks fuel after purchasing it from the dealership. If you’re a daily commuter, it’s not for you. Space is the most advantage of this car, especially the 3rd row compared to the 2021 Toyota highlander, which was our first choice because it’s a hybrid but 3rd row was miserable and plastics looked more cheaper and fragile than the Atlas. My wife is currently on her way home from a trip to Kentucky. She's sending me messages and video of snow and ice on the road as well as the TPMS telling her she has a tire inflation issue. But...it doesn't say which tire. We assume it is weather related considering she doesn't feel any pull or tilt. Aside from that, our R Line, just like yours, has been a really neat ride. The problems we have had, especially when she was driving home with our toddler granddaughter, is that the "Infotainment" went berserk and turned the radio volume all the way to Peak Power, on its own, and it could not be turned down or even turned off. When my wife pulled into the driveway, I thought she was just jamming out to a favorite tune. Nope! She had to endure head thumping noise for about 20 miles. That thing has a mind of its own. It craps out completely, requiring a "soft-boot" reactivation, or it has had to go in for a manual, out-of-the-dash full reconfiguring of the system. I think she has done about 4 "soft-boots" on her own. We are getting rid of ours this coming week as well. We've had it just under a year and have only put about 8,000 miles on it. Other than the issues addressed, it is a very sweet machine. I will admit to that. It has plenty of pep in its step and is really fun to drive. Well, other than the ultra-high lipped front seats. They make it a little cumbersome to access and egress. Either way, it has to go.

It just improve the response curve and removes up shifting eagerness in Normal mode. 23 mpg and regular grade gas is good as 26mpg premium. Unless you are getting a hybrid truck not many this size do much better. Now MPG has improved in many SUVs for 2021 so it may have fallen in mileage ranking recently but this has class leading storage behind the 3rd row. And if its regular gas instead of premium that provides a savings. Looking into getting a Atlas R Line premium trim in about 8 months. Im looking at other trucks with at least 20 cubic feet behind 3rd row...so it stacks up pretty decent against the comp in sticker price as well and not huge like a suburban. Im aware this version only has 2 rows.

I would have liked seeing you incorporate driving dynamics and a short drive. How can a review of a vehicle be complete just parked? As for mileage, I get 42 on the highway going average 70 mph in my Civic but that's not a house-on-wheels the way these SUV are. I have 1.5 Liters and 2900 curb weight. I see the Toyota products in the new Sienna and RAV4 or Highlander to have hybrid options and more economical drivers. I had two VR6 vehicles back in the day in two Passat sedans and I loved the engine but mine did not want to last very long. I hope VW has made the new ones more reliable and long-lived. I have a 2019 Golf Alltrack (6 speed manual, 4-Motion) which I love to death. The Atlas honestly smells too strongly of "vehicle designed specifically for Americans", which to me, as a long time VW fan, triggers warning bells. No offense to anyone who loves the American market Passat, but market specific vehicles like those tend to lag behind VW's global vehicles in features, quality, interior materials, and lots of the little touches they're known for. They also get refreshed a lot slower and get full updates rarely (if ever). I agree, it's not a bad car, but their global vehicles have tech that this Cross Sport is lacking and if you compare it to the new upcoming 2022 GTI, you really start to notice the wide gap between them. One of the glaring things I noticed were the rear seat fold down handles that are on my Alltrack, but weirdly missing on the much larger Atlas (located on the sides near the hatch opening and let the seats fold down without having to walk up to the rear doors). Just one example of a small thing that makes a difference but they omitted, likely due to cost cutting. Again, not saying its a bad vehicle, just that VW dilutes their brand reputation by delving into market specific vehicles like this while withholding popular global vehicles from us.
