バンクーバーのダウンタウンは半島のようになっていて、ダウンタウンに入るための橋が四つあって、バラードブリッジというのはその橋のひとつです。いちばんUBCにちかい橋なので、ぼくはこの橋を通ってUBCに三年通いました。いま写真を見返してみて、懐かしさより安堵感のほうが大きいことに気づきました。何のための安堵感というと、ほんとうに日本に戻ってこれたんだという安堵感です。UBCに通っていたころは、バンクーバーで生活するのがやっとで、いつか日本に戻れるなんてことは夢にも思っていなかったんですね。
Downtown Vancouver is sort of a peninsula, and there are four bridges into Downtown. Burrard Bridge is one of those bridges. It is the closest bridge to UBC, and I commuted to UBC for three years using this bridge. As l looked at the photos, I had a feeling of relief rather than nostalgia, the feeling of relief for having returned to Japan after all. For, when I was attending UBC, I didn't even think it was possible for me to eventually return to Japan.
