LAKE CITY, PA - Just before 2 PM, Lake City Fire Company was dispatched to a working structure fire in the 10000 block of Smith Street. Upon dispatch, crews noted that they could see a header on their way to the scene. On arrival, crews found a fully involved detached garage fire with exposure to a house. Crews quickly pulled two hand lines and started an attack on the fire. The homeowner was able to make it out of the structure and there were no pets. Early reports from the scene indicate that the fire may have started from a vehicle parked in the garage. The fire department will continue to investigate further before confirming these preliminary reports. Crews were on scene for just over two hours.
A.F. Dobler Hose & Ladder Co., Lake Shore Fire Department, Fairview Fire and Rescue, Platea Volunteer Fire Company, Springfield Vol. Fire Dept., and Cranesville Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to assist.

They have been working on repairing it over the past couple of weeks. They removed the roof completely, gutted the entire structure and are currently putting the new roof on.

Do any of you know about the Kia/Hyundai 500,000 car recall and the company's recommendation to not park these cars in garages or close to buildings?

Having a chief on the nozzle is never a good thing.

Sometimes it's him and one other guy, as is the case here. Gotta work with what you have until mutual aid can arrive.

why?

@@uniden03229 Even if it was just the chief and one other guy, (which it ISN'T in this case) the chief should NOT be on the nozzle. He should be backing up the nozzleman so he can keep an eye on things.

@@jimmccabe801 A Chief's job is COMMAND, not fire attack, PERIOD. At a bare minimum, he should have the firefighter on the nozzle so he can direct him.

@@ffjsb in a small department he may end up on the nozzle. so "period" doesn't always apply

So goes the volunteer fire service. You must work with the people and equipment that you have. And with the fewer people getting involved in the fire service today, this is only going to get worse.. Who's to blame? It's society and the "me generation" that is more concerned with themselves.

I agree to a point about the me generation but the other problem is the the amount of hours needed to be put in for state certifications. They increase year after year and it get hard for people to commit. Unfortunately it's a thepoint where VFDs have to merge multiple companies together to basically get enough crew for one of the companies. It's ashame but it's the reality now. My company has 20 members. We get maybe 6 to 8 out on a call and in most cases 2 or 3 of us are certified to work interior. We try to train Unfortunately we cannot train in house for interior operations due to insurance reasons,so these members have to find classes and when you can get one they may be an hour away. It's a hard situation and the instructors won't come out unless you can get 10 or more for classes. And that isn't easy either even extending out to mutual aid depts for bodies. VFDs will be extinct very soon.

@@ronstrulic4388 You've got it exactly right. Back when I was a volunteer FF )1970s and 80s) all you needed to qualify was to be upright and breathing. Training came as you went along. Once you knew how to put on the Scott AirPak you were certified to go inside. Didn't need a CDL to drive the truck. Ladder training was climb the ladder, then the aerial truck. And that truck was a 1953 Diamond T, (pink, no less, faded from exposure to the sun rays coming through the front windows) later upgraded to a 1973 Chevy. No inside seats except for the driver and shotgun. The others rode standing on the side running boards and tail platform. This was no small town, either. City of 55000+ people.

I can't agree more. In my area its even getting hard to find people who want to do it full time. I did the scheduling at our combination department and the part-time guys were very hard to get people to work weekends and holidays as the roster got younger. The people coming in didn't seem to have the same fire in there belly as my generation did, I would work when ever they needed me and play when I was off. Now its play first and work second and that was for people getting paid. I cant even imagine what its like for all volunteer.

I started in a vol. paid dept. Got hired full time and worked 33 years. retired as a capt. Working weekend and holidays really didn't bother me much. Having four days off in a row made it all worth it. Its the best job ever.
