On the Left - 松山恭助 MATSUYAMA Kyouske of Japan
Matsuyama has been on the Japanese team for a very long time - having had a successful Junior career before he fenced on the Top 4 Senior Japanese Team in the Season of 2015/16. At the 2016 Junior World Championships, Matsuyama lost to his teammate SHIKINE Takahiro in the individual semifinal, and anchored the Japanese Junior Team to win against Italy in the Team Final - the last time that Japan won the Junior Team Foil World Championships.
On the Senior Circuit, Matsuyama. Since 2016, Matsuyama has consistently made the Top 64, but has never medalled. In 2019, Matsuyama made his first top 8 at the Bonn World Cup, but lost to Alessio FOCONI of Italy in the Quarterfinal. Matsuyama fenced very well at the Tokyo Olympic Games, almost defeating Daniele GAROZZO in the Top 16, then scored very high indicators against Italy and France in the Team. However, Matsuyama and Team Japan did not medal, then Matsuyama did not gain any great results in the following season.
On the Right - Alessio FOCONI of Italy
Foconi is one of the most dominant fencers since the end of the Rio Olympic Cycle. Foconi was World Champion in 2018, medalled at almost every event in the Season of 2018-2019, and was Ranked FIE World Number 1 from the season of 2017/18 to 2020/21. In the previous season (Season of 2021/22) Foconi won the Plovdiv World Cup, won Bronze at the Incheon Grand Prix and the Paris World Cup
