I can tell you after owning the AT GR86 for a week now. And as an older owner that is just done with manuals on a daily driver. The AT is great. Honestly I am not racing the thing the auto can match how I feel like driving. If you want to track it then get the manual. Be prepared to wait Toyota is pumping way more auto's then stick. I personally have owned 10 manuals in my life. In the 80's it really was the normal. AT was expensive and people didn't buy them. And they broke big time. Times have changed I really like that Levan saw it for what it is. It's a different experience but still a great one. As just a daily driver once you try the AT and the manual you have a tough decision.

Glad to see some fresh perspective on the auto GR86/BRZ seems very RU-vid Auto Reviewer was bashing the hell out of it. The auto has it’s reasons it’s generating the audience and demographics it needs. The manual will draw it’s audience no question about it. Hopefully the manual on this gen is much better than the last one.

Great video as always! Your channel and your attitude are great! You will hit 10k before you know it!!! I have a 22 BRZ in WR Blue Limited MT. Had about two weeks but only about 150 miles on mine because of weather. Love what I have experienced so far! Car is a thrill to drive! I cannot wait for spring. Great comparison video, keep bringing us the great content.

Most of that stuff is in the limited version of the BRZ. Minus the sport, eco, and snow modes. Heated side mirrors are on the limited model.

It is actually only automatics that get the drive modes. A manual doesn't need them. Your feet are the drive mode. I know some companies (honda) like to add drive modes to manuals, but its a silly waste of money gimmick.

BRZ automatic will have the different drive modes and pretty much all the stuff in the GR automatic.

I’ve been going back and forth with the BRZ and Mustang Ecoboost. I have a 3 years old and a 9 months old. Seeing that grown man sit in the back helps a little lol.

Mechanically they are both the same but the Toyota looks sportier. The front end and the badging makes a huge difference plus the Toyota interior on the base models is nicer as well offering leather whereas the Subaru is plastic and cloth. I've been to the dealerships and have seen both in person.

Nice! I've recently just moved to Jacksonville. I'm looking at getting the BRZ but some of the trim differences from the 86 looks legit too and could change my mind. Regardless, it's a Subaru at heart. Thanks for the video!

The gearing is pretty different from the auto and manual, almost a 1000 rpm's at 75 mph. More performance with the manual, better mpg and quieter more relaxed cruising in the auto as well as adaptive cruise control.

@@Malinkadink your not entirely wrong, but its only a shitty old 6 speed automatic, nothing good about it really and it shifts kind of sloppy with the manual mode from what ive heard. im sure its a decent transmission but the way i see it is that this car isnt worth it whatsoever if your getting it for just commuting, as even with the auto compared to some of the new automatics, the mpg isnt good at all. the only real plus side is the driving assist stuff which isnt all that great in toyotas anyway

@Juan Carlos The manual has a 4.1 rear differential and a .767 sixth gear with an 24.8" tire. 75mph is 3195 rpm and 3408 at 80 mph. The auto has a 3.9 rear diff and a .582 sixth gear for 2306 rpm at 75 mph and 2460 rpm at 80 mph. I live in Texas where we have long stretches at 75 speed limits and some 80 mph speed limits. My concern would be, how loud and obnoxious is an already loud car going to be at 75-85 for a few hundred miles turning 3200-3500 rpms?

Gotta get a manual to keep the affordable enthusiast car alive! It's a dying breed! I understand they have to sell automatics to support having enthusiasts 3 pedal cars because autos outsells the manuals by far.

Cool vid! My opinion, as a former Toyota guy, now Nissan, but seriously looking into the GR86 and the upcoming GR Corolla, I think 86 vs BRZ is just which Brand you're more familiar with. Brilliant union by the Brands though! Don't believe can go wrong with either. And I will be going auto, lol; too old for all that shifting these days! Lol

Interesting to see toyota take the FA24 fix the torque dip even more than Subaru has done. Which is why he picked up at the end the manual is just faster so you had the start. You can find this info with everydaydriver. Awesome video!

You had a passenger in the car right? That would take away about a car length from your win. The added weight makes quiet a difference. Usually 0.1 or 0.20 seconds in a quarter mile too

A passenger makes a big difference. Ive personally seen a passenger going into one car and then hopping in the other and it was like the cars swapped places in a roll. multiple length difference with a normal weight adult. also the cars aren't quite broken in yet so there's that.

Great video. With Toyota I also like the black mirrors the front grill and the little GR touches. I think it’s a better looking car, But like you, I’m loyal to the Subaru brand Don’t forget there are plenty of STI options coming to make the Subaru look better. Such as STI side fenders , LED front air intake spoilers and full body kit. You can also get an OEM red STI stop start button now but it’s expensive and FYI the previous gen STI start button is compatible with the 2022 brz you can pick up a second hand one relatively cheap. Also HKS are making a supercharger right now are you gonna get it ?? 💪😆😆

Toyota dealership near me has two GR86's in stock both base models one manual and an auto, 3k mark up on each. Found BRZ Limited for MSRP. Subaru it is.

5:00 The torque dip IS still there, it was filled in like 80% leaving a 20% torque dip. But its not as noticeable anymore but the dyno graph still shows it being there

@@kippage2719 honestly, my car only had a hiccup back in 2019 and that was the injectors going bad. But after replacement, it’s all good. I would say, if you do regular maintenance on it, it’ll take care of you. Even when boosted on steroid, it’s still going strong! I would say, I’m one of them lucky person with a first released FRS that’s still around with its original motor lol.

7:21 you OWN it when your in manual mode / paddle shift mode in an automatic. The motor responds the same as a manual when you are in manual mode, the only difference IS there is no clutch to press to change gears.

The manual is faster, more responsive and overall better for what the car is trying to be. So... the there is more here than just a missing clutch. Don't talk about stuff you don't know.

@@shawnskates you can clearly see in the video the automatic is faster on a roll. You can’t shift faster than an automatic in a manual no matter how good of a driver you may be. The manual is quicker off the line though

5:36 You don't need a manual as long as your automatic is responsive when you hit the throttle. Some auto's are not responsive and you literally have to go wot for them to downshift. Don't expect an altima or civic to have a responsive automatic, those would be very boring to drive

There’s pros and cons with both. The auto upshifts faster, more reliable, has zero rev hang and is faster from a roll. The manual downshifts faster, you have more control, you aren’t denied downshifts and is faster from 0-60.

You are also shifting way too early and not in the right gear to pull. You should have dropped down to 4th, floored it, waited until 7k to shift each time. You would have gapped the auto.

If I’m going to get a Subaru it will not be this car. I’m going to get something traditional and all wheel drive. This car is tied into Toyota sport coupe history and Toyota has much more history with RWD cars so this vehicle better aligns being a Toyota product then buying it as a Subaru seems out of place as a Subaru.

That’s a fair point, however the BRZ was first before Toyota even made the Gt86 or GR86 when they collaborated with Scion on the first Gen BRZ and FRS

The manual variant of these is more than half a second (but less than a full second) faster than the auto. So you should’ve kept pulling on him. I think you were not pushing the car to its full potential which is why you weren’t able to keep pulling away.

Automatic??? That’s a turn off. Whoever has the manual is already the winner. I pick the BRZ as the winner You can buy the STI package at the factory for the BRZ. It looks a lot cooler. You can’t buy the GR kit for the 86. BRZ is the winner.
