One of the most popular perdigons in Europe, this is a fly that spent a lot of time getting fished not only by Devin but many other competitors in the 2022 World Championship. While no one maybe knows exactly what the original Gasolina is, Devin breaks down the style and the many options for materials and then shows you how to tie it.
Visit tacticalflyfisher.com to get the materials for this fly, or anything else you need for your fly tying and fishing.

Good video bud. Thank you for sharing. That roller, if anyone is wondering, it is called "Fiskars Fabric cutter". Works well with carbon fiber and fiberglass matt/fabric & feather shaft flush cuts.

This was a great beginners kit for a great price. ru-vid.comUgkxKRURvLsu9Vvyw7gIuvt8FsApoQNCdz-1 Its given us a huge variety to test out and see what works well and what we like to use. Majority of the flies have stayed together well, but some of the rainbow warriors did unravel after catching a few blue gill. All in all, this was a great kit and are so happy with the purchase and value for money.

I love tan thread under medium flash with fluorescent orange hotspot and black wing case. Switching threads mid tie is tricky but when done right is flawless. & I use a lighter to get those thread ends tidy if needed also. Cover the tail fibers with your finger to block the flame and you’re good

One thing I do, and I am new to this so while it works I can't say it necessarily is optimal, but does cut down on the supplies you need to buy, is to use translucent opal colored tinsel over thread of the color I want. The body can be any color thread, then when wrapped in the tinsel that thread color comes through.

Quick question about bead color - seems that you mostly go for the copper color. Is this based on personal success or something you feel is more appropriate for Perdigon (I have seen the dark nickel used for the olive perdigon). Anything wrong in trying a range of color like gold, silver or even black? Trying to make good use of my collection :) but always welcome advices from expert as for combo that have been working more than others. Thanks !
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 Год назад
@@stephanebogen5411 Copper is the bead color I probably use most often and is very common among competitors. There's no reason you can't try other colors on this fly and see how it goes.

I was ready for "Yet Another Gasolina Video" however this was not that. Great info and color combo slide. As fly designs get smaller and ultra simple I am tempted to try a bare hook with a bead glued on. I'm sure it would catch fish and I would be very disappointed...
@patches152
@patches152 Год назад
Troutbitten just did that actually
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 Год назад
We've done the bead on a hook test as well and they do catch fish. With that said, there are plenty of times when it hasn't worked as well when "standard" patterns do. So I'm not likely to fill a box with beads on a hook anytime soon.
@stephanebogen5411
@stephanebogen5411 Год назад
Hello Devin - Regarding the hook, I find it confusing that for Perdigon, some are using nymph hook and slotted bead, and some are using Jig hooks. In this video, you used one of my favorite options (FullingMill Jig Force FM5125 hook). Not sure I understand the logic about using one versus the other. My rationale would be to use a jig hook for my point nymph and a nymph hook with a smaller bead as top fly. So, I ended up using a FullingMill Jig Force FM5125 hook. I really like them as they are super strong, and I really like the wide gap. I feel it gives me a compromise between the standard nymph hook and the regular jig hook because the eyelet is horizontal with the shank as a regular nymph hook but with a 45-degree angle. Greatly appreciate if you have additional guidance on this - best - Stephane
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 Год назад
Stephane, I don't think about hooks as being hooks for perdigons versus other nymphs or as being dropper fly hooks vs point fly hooks. Given my background in competitive fly fishing, I want a hook that penetrates and holds fish throughout the fight and a hook that the point is durable, and the wire doesn't bend. At this point my two favorite hooks for smaller nymphs, given these criteria, are the Fulling Mill Jig Force Short and the Dohiku 303. That's why I have featured these hooks in my last several tutorials.

@alexargyros7186 Год назад
In the video, you say that a Fulling Mill Jig Force Short size 22 is actually closer to a true 18. Does that mean that a Dohiku 303 size 16 would be about the same size as the Fulling Mill?
