In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

my streak from the first match was one of the most surreal things I've ever experienced, having that kind of luck during the biggest match of my life. it's always a pleasure to play again andy, and i'm sure we'll have many more chances to duke it out in the future.

Thanks for literally playing and having fun and challenging yourself in the midst of literally the highest level competition that exists for this game. And as a casual but lifetime player (original NES and gameboy versions), it's inspiring how you and others keep breathing new life into this game! Keeps things fresh and interesting for yourself keeps it fresh for all of us.

Seeing Fractals joy is just amazing, he's having the time of his life regardless of what's happening. Yay, I'm playing Tetris! Yay I'm on a huge Tetris streak! Yay I'm in the lead! Slightly less happy of topping out but then Yay, Andy's playing really well! Yay, Andy managed to beat my score and win! and then he's back to Yay I'm playing Tetris! Gotta love that joy for the game and sportsmanship! Also, didn't know that James Chen was doing commentary work outside of the FGC, a very welcome surprise as I love me some James Chen =) FYI I did play some competitive fighting games back in the days and my reaction to playing on a big screen with people cheering was a deep need to go to the bathroom as I apparently have a nervous bladder. Playing in front of a big audience is no joke!

5:30 108 goddamn lines exclusively Tetrises and even in the first game of the round. I don't think I have ever seen such a thing in all my years of watching classic Tetris. And with Andy going against him even, one of the best players currently. The skill ceiling has become absolutely incredible and I have to say Jonas' influence is still felt. There is just such a warm, nice and friendly attitude by everybody and that is definitely thanks to Jonas and how he was over the years.

The way Fractal braced himself for applauding Andy as he was about to finish the chase down at the end of the first game, the genuine happiness for his opponent's success... all these guys are such role models in sportsmanship and community, humble, modest and just so genuinly nice people. It's kind of heart-warming and wholesome to watch CTWC. Jonas would be so proud of these guys.

In tetris, players earn very little money compared to other popular sports. Andy got about $1500 for finishing 2nd in the CTWC 2020, and often average football players playing in the Second Division earn much more money, even though tetris is incomparably harder than football.

This is absolute insanity! Fractal scores 27 Tetris in a row to start a series… AND LOSE!!! Remember, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game in a losing effort; Harvey Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings only to record the loss in unlucky 13th. Oh, yeah and after that you just shake that off then go and put up 3 wins in a row against an opponent who scores 999,999+ points in a game 13 times in less than 2 hours plus scored on average around 1,100,000 in those 3 losses against you.

They push all five of their fingers against the back of their controller with their thumb on the other hand on the button, thus pushing the controller into the button and effectively turning the entire controller into a giant button where you can use a single swipe of your hand to tap five times at insane speeds. Because of the higher tap rate, they're able to do so many top-level moves as well as play post-29. This playstyle is only 3 years old.

There needs to be a limit on how much time someone can chase down after you top out. Either time or lines.
@Tapion013
@Tapion013 Год назад
So if I have a 100% tetris rate and decide to top out after 60 lines, I just win? I think it's better to just have level 29 be the proper "kill" screen it should be where once you hit level 29, you're done, you have to get the most amount of points by level 29 you can.
@PureInsanity
@PureInsanity Год назад
@@Tapion013 No you don't. The other player in that case will have either 1 minute or 20 lines above your line count to catch up to you, otherwise it is instant loss.
@Tapion013
@Tapion013 Год назад
@@PureInsanity Not always, no. Let's say for some reason I place my first few pieces really really poorly, and I start out needing to dig for like 10 lines for some reason. Meanwhile, my opponent gets a tetris for 60 lines straight. If my opponent decides to top out, and I didn't also have a perfect tetris rate after my first 10 burned lines, I literally just cannot win, 20 lines nor 1 minute will be enough, and now you have to start trying to adjust "Well how much is enough" and it becomes frustrating for the players as well as the tournament organizers. It would be the tetris screen look championship gambling tournament instead of what it really should be, which is a skill based assessment on the exact same pieces. The only difference between now and a few years ago is getting to level 29 isn't as exciting anymore, it's an expectation. Make entering level 29 the final score, and it solves a lot of problems people/some viewers experienced with this tournament. I don't care either way, I personally thought it was super fun watching them play their long matches anyway, but it becomes an entirely different game if you start putting these restrictions in, not to mention unless the overlay gets coded with these arbitrary rules, trying to officiate it would be an absolute nightmare...

I know the level at which these guys are playing is beyond insane. But I’ve noticed that many, many players sort of throw in the towel after a bad drop at the kill screen. With their level of skill I’d think that it’s in those moments after a bad drop that they’re presented with an opportunity to do a legendary dig. Like in game 2 with Andy. He sort of took his foot off the pedal and by the time he got the long bar he needed, he had already ensured he couldn’t make a miraculous recovery. Not saying he would’ve made that recovery, only that he guaranteed he wouldn’t right before getting the perfect piece to make a run at it.

@@dandanthedandan7558 He isn't wrong though, Even without many of the og faces that carried the game in its unpopular years, my issue with watching all these games of rolling is, you always EXPECT and know the game to get to kill screen, previously levels 18 was exciting as you can still top out with daz/hyper tapping, it was still very dangerous but rolling is just way too safe for that and the build up to kill screen doesn't exist anymore, max outs aren't exciting anymore, as an audience member, games take way too long before there's any risk or excitment prevelant, whereas with old playstyles, there was always risky and anything could happen with the next line.

@@succubusfan7206 That's not their point lol. In their previous comment they said the new players don't have a personality and that's straight up insulting. Don't defend this dude you're both not in the same camp

Its refreshing seen kids like fractal, dog or thatchy, they look invincible because they are having fun, now take for example nychrisg a known racist, a known pos, always crying, always playing the victim card not having fun in any game whatsoever. Keep going kids you rock !!!!!!!

What I learned from this stream is a little tidbit of information regarding a fellow BTD6 veteran alongside me: benstein999.
