The first time I watched school of rock, I can’t remember if I had just started playing guitar or if I was still playing bass, but I saw Jack Black playing the Gibson SG standard, but at the time, I just knew it was I Gibson, I didn’t know the model was SG. One day, I tried to find the guitar on the internet, and searched “Gibson” and as one of the search recommendations “Gibson SG” popped up, so I said to myself, “might as well see if that’s it” and sure enough, this popped up and I have wanted an SG ever since!!
I have a black Gibson SG Special '50s Tribute (2014) and the Epiphone SG standard in cherry red (2021) and I prefer the Epiphone and it was half the price of the Gibson.
You did this video exactly right and I learned a great deal. I'm an acoustic/electric guitar and vocals gig dude, mostly rock and roll, and with a new Boss ME80 I want to transition into using a solid body also through the ME80 and a Princeton Reverb. I will be able to afford the actual Gibson 61 soon, but this Epi intrigues me, especially in white. I have several Epi jumbos (EJ200s ) that play as well as if not better than my Gibson SJ200. That's the reason I am even considering an Epi SG. Thank you; I am indebted to you, kind sir.
I have one of these built in October 1997. There are a couple differences in the older ones. The grain stands out all over the body. Not just on top. and the pick guard only comes up to the bottom of the pickups. Like Iommi's, but not between them. And on the truss rod cover, it says " GIBSON". It's an " F" code...built either in Fuji-Gen Japan, or Fine Guitars Korea. Build number 0154! It has the " C" shaped neck, but I'd prefer a shallower one. I have large-size hands. But wide with shorter fingers & bulb-shaped tips. So, A slightly wider, shallower neck would be better. And it came with the brown leather Gibson case from the 90's. Magenta fur inside with the same color hem-stitched silk cover!
I have one of the new epiphone sg standards and recently upgraded to a gibson. The epiphone plays well but looks and sounds like what it is: a much cheaper version (slightly harsh pickups, wonky binding, etc.) Just my two-cents worth..
Great review. I like the sound of these. I've read that the standard neck joint is a bit stronger design than the 61 version, too. Might be a case of getting more for less ? Cheers !
Picking 1 up this week. In Alpine white. EPIPHONE is a Gibson made in the far east. BUT I also own the real deal Gibson SG in Heratage Cherry. Love SG's because of the weight.
I've been watching YT videos on this guitar and was pretty excited about it. So I went to a Guitar Center to check it out. It looks like a total piece of shit. Feels like a piece of shit and has a terrible setup. What a disappointing Guitar.
You sure you didn’t grab one of the cheaper ones? They have a wide range of these from $199 all the way up to like $700-$900. I’ve heard GREAT things about how these play
