The 2022 European Grasstrack Solo Final was saved by the ASTRA Club stepping in to hold the meeting at their superb Swingfield circuit. The track was in the best condition for racing as it has ever been, and all the hard work done by the members of the club leading up to this fantastic event truly paid off, with some very fast and excellent racing. The biggest event of the 2022 season, and could the title stay in the UK with 6 British riders contesting the championships. Former champion Zach Wajknecht was in top form and sure to give it his best shot, and 2 time British Masters champion Chris "Bomber" Harris with his new team behind him had to be in with a shout. Now in the veteran stage of his career, Paul Cooper seems to be faster than ever, so also was going to be in the mix, and with Charlie Powell, Jake Mulford, and Chad Wirtzfeld representing the rest of the British riders, there had to be a good chance that home advantage would give one of them a great shot at winning the European title.
The man they would all have to beat had to be the flying Dutchman Romano Hummel. Having had an amazing season on the European circuit in 2022, Hummel had to start as favourite. It would all depend if the track would suit his style of riding. As practice got underway, it was clear from the off that he loved the track. Not good for all the other competitors, as he looked very fast, but this is the European Final, so there are plenty of class riders in the entry. Kenneth Kruse Hansen, and Jacob Bukhave, both from Denmark are two top riders in their own right, and would be no pushovers. Fellow Dutch riders Mika Meijer, Henry Van Der Steen. and Dave Meijerink also looked likely to be in the mix. A superb event all round, with some great support racing from the 1000cc RH Sidecars, which again saw Mark Cossar going for yet another win, but after Terry Saunters gave him a bit of a scare at Frittenden a few weeks ago, would this be the time when Saunters gets the win over Cossar everyone is waiting for? Matt Fumarola/Andi Wilson, Neal Owen/Jason Farwell, Tom Cossar/Wayne Rickards, Paul Whitelam/Richard Webb, and Trevor & Sam Heath and a few other crews would make this a great meeting, and one to remember.
Paul Hurry (Clerk of the Course) was also taking part in the 350cc Solo support, run over 3 legs, which saw some terrific battles with Dave Mears, Ricky Sandford, Luke Clifton, and young Cameron Taylor.

After listening to a pod cast with Graham Hurry I made a date with this one and am I glad I did. Listening to Trevor Banks and remembering his brother Graham during the interval It made me very grateful for this sport and the quality of it's current riders although no where near the past numbers they certainly could have stood amongst the past greats.
