I notice your riding a gear high aswell as I have the bike and have already broke my leg, the ecm tuning on this bike and throttle response isn’t great or forgiving and ecm and seat are a must
Dual sporters have been begging for a street legal 450. Honda listened. Finally a manufacturer gave us what we’ve been asking for! And seriously, no dual sports are good on road.
No wonder you're getting head shake, you're sitting damn near over the back wheel. A trail bike/supermoto is the ultimate "in traffic" machine with the light weight, tall seat height and punchy engine. Come on guy.
@@PedoBear1811 as someone who rides my dual sport on road with more aggressive tries than this its all in where you sit. Like he said, shouldn't sit nearly that far back, dude looks like he's never ridden a dirtbike, dual sport, or supermoto before.
@@garrison2574 I have only ever owned dirt bikes that where already converted into supermotos. I now own a Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 so it doesn't really "matter" where i sit but yeah thinking back to my ktm days i would sit much more to the front where even my friends said i look ridiculous sitting so much forward. That is however where you have to sit. And have your butt at the other side of the seat pushing the bike down
@@PedoBear1811 yeah for sure. In the vid though he's sitting so far back that it also looks funny, and its causing the head shake problem to be worse too lol.
@@garrison2574 He said that in the vid. Why people are watching this unqualified goober review bikes he's never ridden before is beyond me. I hate youtubers.
Agree 100% I think the autor is exaggerating to make the video more "likable" or interesting or something. It's hard to believe this is coming from a seasoned rider.
Well, it’s an intermediate/expert level dirt bike with a license plate! There is definitely a learning curve. But no way around the fact that factory fuel mapping sucks. Can’t blame Honda entirely for scraping together a DOT legal emissions bike when the twitchy throttle really isn’t terrible off-road. It’s really meant to be in the dirt. And to be ridden hard in the dirt. Not poking around town. On a 450 fuel injected 4 stroke dirt bike. That’s like daily driving a 7 second drag racing car with no interior and radials. Get a vortex+sumo wheels+comfortable seat, and then you have a better street bike.
As far as making it street legal, I don't know if you mentioned it as I haven't gotten that far in the video, but Honda went as far as rubberizing the teeth on the OEM sprocket (1 or both, not sure) to get the noise pollution to a legal level. They had to tinker with basically every little piece just a tiny bit to make it legal lol
Wow! Obviously Chase doesnt get it. Honda finally gives the masses what they want and Chase complains that it isnt an old school Japanese dual sport. I will concede the seat needs to go if you spend more than an hour in the saddle. Im puzzled by his complaint of the clutch pull effort. Many have insisted Honda should have made it hydraulic but Personally, I don’t have any issues with it. Perhaps clutch feel or engagement may be more valid points. Chase seems to think this bike is an adventure bike. To me this bike will never be a highway star but then again that wasnt what this bike was designed for. I get this was a demo but you really need to take this bike off road. And Im not talking tight single track riding as this bike was not designed for that either. Perhaps the European counterparts may be a bit more “race ready” but I doubt they will be as dependable as this Honda. Plus, Dealer support for a Honda is much more plentiful. I swapped out my ECU for a Vortex which provided multiple benefits. (Thanks EPA for constricting Honda to make this 50 state compliant and putting it in a sad state of tune) You talked about how this bike feels like the most dirtbike motorcycle you ever rode then compared it to a BMW GS in the way of highway manners. Sorry Chad, you missed the point with your review.
That head shake at high speeds can easily be fixed by softening the clickers on the suspension. It has a rear shock setting for a 175 lb man. Set at the stiffest setting. Gotta know how to work on these things. Tons of maintenance. But I am a mechanic and love to ride. This is my dream bike. I own the 21.. love it.
I have a 2021 CRF450RL that I converted to a Super Moto. This is an awesome bike as long as you get the Tokyo Mod Vortex ECU to fix the horrible fueling. You’ll need it even if you leave the exhaust stock. Mine rev surged constantly. It ran like crap and stalled out. The new ECU fixed everything.
How is it on the highway? In this first impression video he isn’t really vibing with it, but you have way more experience on this bike. I ride dirt bikes all the time, and want a road legal bike. I have about a 25 minute commute to work daily, however occasionally I will need to be on the road between 1-3 hours. Usually twice a month. Is this bike comfortable for riding for that amount of time (very occasionally) or should I search for something else? Thanks!
@@chasewarner99 my commute is the same. 4 lane highway posted 70mph. For me, it's a blast on the highway, once you swap the seat for a Seat Concepts. I've done many long trips on mine, and like any bike, you're ready for a break at fuel stops. Just keep in mind, euro 5 emissions requirements make this bike miserable from the factory, with the fuel cut out causing the "twitchy" throttle. An $800 Vortex ecu solves it. Between the ecu, full FMF exhaust, seat, and 3 gallon IMS tank, I'm over $2K in upgrades. I really wanted to love this bike when I bought it, but I couldn't, in factory form. Money does buy happiness after all lol. This bike isn't for everyone, but it's perfect for me.
If I had kept this bike stock I think eventually I'd be looking at other options in this price range, probably a Tenere. However after making my mods, as an off road focused bike, thats legal on the street, I can't imagine getting rid of it for a long time.
@@ridered55x84 I appreciate that. I've had some serious projects that have slowed us down. We are getting my son a different bike shortly so I'll probably start up some again for him on that and after I get my basement done I can get some recreation in again....adulting sucks!
It does take a decent amount to get it into a comfortable super moto. I converted my 2019 450L to SM over time. Did G2 throttle tamer, vortex ecu, seat concepts XL, warp 9 17s with continental conti sport tires, 45T rear sprocket, larger front rotor, full yoshi rs4 exhaust. Completely changed the bike. It’s a real beast uncorked. I bought mine used for a great deal, but for the cost of all the aftermarket to make it into a super moto compared to buying one new, I would just buy a husky 701.
It is a dirt bike,,, not really design for highway,,, even it is road legal. When you are living in rural areas with a lot of rough road and muddy holes it is almost perfect. Also I think it used SOHC which produces more torque and quick acceleration,,, which is perfect for a dirt bikes.
I dunno how to take this video. It's laughable. The bike is meant to hop on the road to the next trail, not critique its characteristics on the road.. its a dirtbike lol
Yea im not to enthusiastic about dealerships at the moment, went to get a 22 mt07 they wanted 4k down plus 267 a month for 36 months with none of the 4k dp not going towards the bike, im like no thanks the bike aint even worth 14k
Nothing in US law requires manufacturers to make all street legal bikes rideable for people not competent to ride them…hyperbikes? I am sure you are a fine street oriented motorcycle rider as I have seen plenty of your videos. But if you ever review another street legal dirt-oriented bike consider a format that lets you, and your vicariously engaged viewers, experience and reflect on the bike as it was meant to be ridden. Side roads, to back highways, to dirt roads, etc.
Lol, this is so hilarious. Basically every road rider's reaction to riding a 450 dirtbike 😂 including myself. Until you've got a lot of hours on a dirtbike, you won't know how to ride it. Ass forward, elbows up, ankles and knees glued to the bike and chin over the bars when accelerating haha. Barky throttle and flame-outs are part of the 450 fun. Price is ok, it's meant to be a do it all bike with a race engine. WR450F is better in every aspect though.
Like my gear? Probably not the best setup for a dirt bike on the street but here's the skinny. bit.ly/C2Wgear Helmet -- bit.ly/C2Wrr3 Bluetooth --imp.i104546.net/WDER6e Jacket -- imp.i104546.net/EaAJxP Pants -- imp.i104546.net/x9NyyA Gloves - -imp.i104546.net/XxEOdGSun Boots -- imp.i104546.net/Gj1Gok Glasses -- bit.ly/3nXSet9 **code: Chase gets ya 10% off!
I want you to ride a 450x and compare a lot of people say it’s better to get that and just add the lights yourself, but I know the emissions stuff and ecm tuningmakes the bike ruff and seats not even usable
10k is a lot considering drz400 is the completion there 7500-8000 there’s also the Ktm 690 and husky 701 there both better but cost more then 10k and maintenance is more but most riders on these bikes are off-road more then road and do everything to them and service them, plus dirt bikes usually don’t break and insurance is so cheap don’t think it could be cheaper on any other vehicle
As someone who rides honda dirtbikes, yes the Power is supposed to be punchy and a little sketch.. It makes it easier to control in heavy sand. When you hit a trail and let the engine breathe in 3rd is where you will feel it. Also the seat isn't really ment to be used. Offroad you should only sit on turns or accelerating. So seat comfort at least offroad doesn't matter. 10k is normal price. It's not cheap but it's not expensive. To have it detuned that much is pretty rough for 10k but it's still the same engine that I'm pretty sure you can retune it. Husky would be about 12k for this so it's not a bad deal at all. I will actually be purchasing this for a bike I can put on a rack and take it everywhere on my truck. Which is exactly what I think it's built for.. But yes this is a race bike. It's like hoping on a cbr 1000rr when you are a green rider. It will feel the best only at full Throttle but when you do, the suspension comes alive. That floppy steering will allow you to hit bad obstacles at speed and it is so good
Honestly didn’t see this first ride coming. Love my 450L though. Such a fun bike. The throttle definitely sucks in first gear and is only a little better in second. Only way to fix it is to buy a new ECU for it. But you do get used to it. I don’t have issues with stalling. The seat is a plank but there’s multiple options on the market. The bike is great as a dirt bike, and for use around town. You eventually get used to the bike and riding it at highway speeds. Granted I don’t go over 70 either with dirt tires.
I have the same bike people often change out the ecu to a vortex ecu and a g2 throttle tamer to fix the low end throttle twitch I’ve put a little over 2,600 miles on mine it’s miserable riding slow technical stuff without changing the ecu and the throttle tamer
Nice video. However, all the complains about how uncomfortably the bike could be for longer hours, tell me that some riders have only used this bikes for fun, and not for work like I have when I lived in South America 😂. I used to travel 8+ on my KLX 150. I would not complain about anything on this bike but maintenance intervals. Thanks for the review! ❤
Chase being so dramatic love my crf450rx in sumo trim. Yeah throttle is twitchy but can be fixed with throttle tube. On bar wobble only time had any problem with mine was when front wheel sets down lil off center
I got a 2019 crf450L. Totally agree with you on the highway! 60-65 is about as fast as I go. It's not a "fast" bike but it sure is tons of fun. 6500 miles and I do multiple off road Enduro races with it and a yearly long adventure ride.
Do you have any issue with riding long distances? I live in the desert and will have to ride a 2-3 hours sometimes to get to places I want to ride/explore, can it be set up to be enjoyable? I've looked at the 300L Rally but like the power of the 450.
I have a 2019 crf450L and hands down after owning over 30 bikes it is my favorite 7500 miles of everything from, dirt, moto, stunts, supermoto setup on the tail of the dragon multiple times. It’s just a do everything bike, and I’m not particularly easy on it🤷♂️ I bought it to ride it so that’s exactly how it’s treated( with proper Maintenance of course). If I ever had to get rid of it, the RL would be the only one lol
I love it on the highway the only thing that bothers me is the vibration in the Handel bars makes my hands go num if i could fix that it would be flawless
I've put several hours on a CRF450R, and it sounds like everything I remember. The super fast rev up and down is due to a super light flywheel and rotating mass. With a port and polish job and some tuning they become snappy to the point of being almost scary. Now I'm itching for a CRF again 🤣
OC: by detuning the engine. Power mods: air box, vortex ecu, yosh exhaust. That should also clean up the throttle and stalling issues. If not, there are more throttle mods. Then just adjust the suspension as needed, and add tires that are more road biased.
As someone who rides dirt bikes and had a crf450 and would illegally take my dirt bike on the street, it’s Natural and I loved the way it felt. I imagine a newer bike would feel even better.
you know the freeway wobble is mostly the tires...so maybe calm down. and maybe say how the bikes feels vs how you feel. relax, and understand its a 450.
I have a street legal crf450x. It rides like this RL. Only good to run for a few miles on asphalt from one dirt trail to another. On trails it is awesome. A near perfect dual sport (IMHO) is my xr650l. I was thinking of selling my xr and 450x and buy this bike. Not no more. Thanks for the review.
That's the primary reason I ended up buying a WR250R instead of the CRF. It is an absolute blast around town! I've done 70mph on the highway on it and, while I'd prefer not to do long distances like that, I wasn't nearly as terrified as Chase claimed to be here. :D I came from a Z750S and was worried that the lack of power compared to that bike would be an issue, but the light weight and ability to drive straight to a trail and ride it more than makes up for that. Can't imagine selling it anytime soon.
That's the thing which all competition engines have. "True" race dirt bikes all have competition engines which are designed to race. You are not mend to daily on them and should not do it since the service is insanely high
I had an XT350 in the early 90’s. Great bike! I know this Honda is leaps and bounds better than my old Yamaha but even as a newbie I knew that the shake on the highway was because of the aggressive tires it had. Id love this Honda and the aftermarket parts availability is apparently huge for this bike, which I imagine would solve the seat issues. But I’m probably too old. 😂
The CRF450L does everything the MT09 does, and the mt09 can only dream on doing half the CRF450 does :/ Dual Sport VS Road Bike, completely different types of bike
You can literally make any dirt bike or Enduro street legal to drive in any state (you might have to use out of state registration if you live in the likes of CA, NY, or NJ because, well, you know), but it didn't take much for Honda to make the "CR450R" street legal....but they did go a little far in detuning the engine and management itself just for the hell of it. This RL is super underpowered and detuned compared to the R, so much so that it's not great for trail riding and slow maneuverability because it'll just choke itself out and stall. Thankfully, you can get an ECU flash and exhaust and it'll gain back almost all of it's old R character... it's really a necessity. And the price should really reflect how much you need to do to it to get it to somewhat perform and behave like it actually should.... this RL should be anywhere from 8-9k tops, because you're going to have to drop at least 1500 to fix it 😅 10k for this bike the way it is is outrageous IMO, and I'm a Honda fan, that's the only reason why this bike is even appealing in the first place....but it's not much faster than an XR650L out of the box... and that bike can be had for 6k.... and that bike has the prestige and all the rally and Baja titles to back it up(yeah I know, the XR600R, same frame though, same exact looks though) Edit: that Renthal pad being backwards is "triggering" me 🤣😵💫🤣
Any bike that will cost over 10k then you have to buy a new ecu right out of the gate to run it somewhat decent . Nah. Its garbage .... Just go buy a husky or ktm .
This dude is scared of everything! Lol I ride mine like maniac with sumo tires and I do just fine. My Buddy has a 1000 and I dusted him in the mountains. This is the wrong video to watch if your interested in buying one of these.
This is an off-road bike, that you can ride on the street. There is a plethora of bloated pigs that cruise well on the street and are like riding a Harley off rode!
Would you take a crotch rocket on the dirt track? I think not, this bike is meant for someone who has gravel roads to an enduro track and is still road capable. This is not a review worth its time, test its ora in its environment.
lol this was actually kind of annoying to watch. The point of this bike is that you can ride the road to get to the trails legally not to go 80 on the highway but that was the main focus of this video 😆
C'mon man, I just got home from a nightshift 0615 this morning, 43 miles one way, 47°F on a DR650 w/backpack strapped to the seat. It's a dualsport and they're fun. If I can do it, anyone can.
