I had my test drive in the Kona Ultimate and have to say I was more than impressed, extremely comfy, high tech, great mileage, the interior is finished to a high standard and feels great during a really good, smooth, quiet ride. I get my Ultimate around the end of July and I can`t wait.
Are you happy with it? I've done 13.5K miles in my Ultimate in the past 9 months and it's the best car I've ever owned! I've got over 300 miles several times - my best was 314 miles.
I bought this car. It was 20k less than the tesla equviliant, gets 300 miles when I don't run heat or ac and 250 if I do, charges quickly, and is a sheer joy to drive. It has just enough space for me to be comfortable and is nimble, has a fantastic turning radius, incredible acceleration, and is small enough to fit into most city parking. This is an excellent car and I am glad I waiting 12 years between getting cars for this. The id4 was on my list but it is much bigger and I needed something small.
@@Ineverreadreplies their point is the reviewer is comparing it to a tesla when they shouldn't be compared. The reviewer actually compared it to a lot of cars that done make sense at all. Any tesla model that is of similar capacity to the Kona is ridiculously more expensive.
@@Paulamon92 Exactly - I had looked at the iD4 online, then I saw one recently and it's huge in comparison similar to an Etron. The Kona is a crossover based off the i30 chassis
I drove one not long ago and it blew me away. I came away thinking I couldn't care how it looks because the drive made more then Up for it. Soo smooth and feels like A V6 V8 low speeds basically effort less
You compared Kona to cars that either give less range on Single charge or ones that are more expensive than Kona. Show me a better car with same or better range and the same price. Then we can talk about whether Kona is a good/bad package
Thank you for the review in the Kona EV. I like to watch all electric car reviews as I believe all EV’s matter and all EV’s will fit someone’s needs and budget. The more people that can transition to sustainable energy the better. 👍🏻 What I would say is a car review should point out all good and all bad points with regards to any particular vehicle. This includes things like common problems, recalls or quirks. There another comment already been made and asking if it came with a fire extinguisher, I believe that commenter also referring to the Kona EV’s apparent issue with potentially bursting into flames. This should definitely be a highlighting point being such a ‘HOT TOPIC’. The 2021 model may or may not be subject to any such issue with batteries going fire but these reviews will inspire others with lesser budgets to perhaps consider and purchase a used older version. These older versions which certainly are susceptible to battery fires. The main point here would be to highlight the need to check it has had the relevant recall update/replacement done. I think Hyundai have a very good future and the new all electric range is super smart and heading towards the forefront of the EV market. Still playing catch up to same but doing extremely well with super quality vehicles. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻
That is only for a serie of those cars. All those cars will get a battery replacement under warranty. I;m not exactly sure at the current data for this.....but a few months ago I heard that 10 konaE went in firle....on 80000 . I also never hear about fire risk with ICE cars, but I've seen burning a lot of them already.
I was still waiting for a confirmed Id3 delivery date after ordering one 10 months ago, even then the delivery dates kept going backwards, currently it was October, even that was not guaranteed, in the end I cancelled and ordered a Kona Electric after test driving one, I was so impressed, its def got much more torque than the VW, and the infotainment and speaker system is much superior. Fingers crossed it should be arriving this week after ordering less than 6 weeks ago.
tesla super charging network is pretty damn nice. and you can use the public chargers. not the other way around with the kona. also the tesla screen is spiffy. but yeah its very competitive. plus no 4-6 month wait on the kona.
Ordered mine just over 3 months ago, not due until March! Don't understand the comments about the rear seat when there looked to be at least 9 inches spare from knee to seat back, how much wasted spare room do you need, and there is plenty of room in the boot for a weeks' shopping. No point in saying 'the boot is small,' because someone who needed a bigger boot would simply be looking at a bigger car! For someone wanting a smallish SUV style car this is perfect. I loved my test drive, now just waiting for the thing to arrive.
I have a Kia Niro E, same drivetrain, and the traction control does not allow wheel spin more than a chirp of the tires. Don’t know what your doing wrong.
The cars you list as rivals to the Hyundai and Kia e Niro ie the Citroen MG ZS and the Peugeot don’t come close to the Hyundai and Kia’s range only the ID3 with the largest battery can better the two Korean cars at a higher price. And with the new price adjustment on both the Kia e Niro 2 64 kw and the soul Ev 64 now priced at £ 32400 after the grant makes them in Ev terms good value
@@adrianbyron-parker5797 what good is that. When choosing a new car you won’t to no by watching your videos what other cars are there of simpler type and price.
Yeah, you’re comparing it to cars that have less range or are more expensive with a similar feature set. I have had my Kona for a full year now, and I’ve test driven others. The button layout of the Kona is superior. After a few weeks, you don’t need to take your eyes completely off the road to turn on heated seats or wheel, same with the HVAC. The layout is nicely symmetric and highly functional and quick to use. And every single car that doesn’t include a HUD, like Mach-E, is not even something I would even consider. Also acceleration is just a party trick when you get below 7 seconds. I have never thought 200BHP is not enough. There is not a single car on the market that beats the Kona on range for that price, while including a high trim level. The Model 3 Standard Range is similarly priced, but the insurance premium on it is over double from the Kona. And it has less range and during winter it performs much worse.
I'm using Carplay/A-Auto (depending on phone). I also tend to listen to everything from metal, hardstyle to kpop and rap and not having a subwoofer is major downside for me and others enjoying music 🎵. So i get more features in the Kona for less cash, lose performance in a straight line and charges slower but is the M3 really worth €6000 more? Ioniq 5 is a better rival in that sense. Kona is slotted in a good place to be fair. 200hp, 64 kWh, good features, cheaper insurance group for me (34/o) that is pretty much HALF! I cant justify the Model 3 for only the superchargers... Driving an i3 2017 and i need more range for a decent price but Tesla is so far out there considered all things above. Might just wait for the new Kona(Ioniq 3-4?) and see what happens 👍🏻
Don’t park your Hyundai Kona EV inside because it could catch fire Hyundai is recalling more than 80,000 EVs over battery fire concerns The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall for 2019-2020 Hyundai Kona and 2020 Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicles after over a dozen battery fires were reported. The agency is also warning owners against parking their vehicles near their homes or any flammable structure. An electrical short in the Kona’s lithium-ion battery cells increases the risk of fire while parked, charging, and driving, NHTSA said, adding, “The safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures.”
I've been driving a Kona Electric 64kW Premium for several weeks now. The good: On a 500 mile road trip I recorded 5 miles per kW which gave me a range of 340 miles. I'm not new to EV's and I think this is the 5th one I've had. To get that range which was mainly on the motorway I had the air con turned off, set the car to Eco mode and never exceeded 65 mph. At todays electricity tariffs and charging at my home in July 2022, it cost me £17.28 to do 340 miles. It also has the best reversing camera I've ever experienced. The seats and driving position are excellent, but there's no room in the back, not a problem for me though. The bad: The Kona has a tiny boot and no storage at the front. It handle like a wallowing hippopotamus, that said, it feels like that after driving a new Ford focus for six months, which has the sharpest handling in it's class. The problem with the poor handling is that if you want to keep the range and economy high, you need to maintain the kinetic energy you have by keeping up your speed when cornering. For clarity I don't own it, as its a company car. Would I buy one with my own money? Fit and finish are pretty good. Value for money is very high. The touch screen is bright and clear, but the handling is lacklustre. So the answer is no, buy a VW ID3 if you can stand the 12 month delivery time.
Really want my next car to be an EV and right now this is the best compromise of not too big for my frequent small town use and good enough range to make my half dozen long trips a year decent.
I wonder why this car costs $17,000AUD more in Australia for exactly the same car with the same specs. You can't blame shipping, last time I looked, Australia was nearer to South Korea than the UK.
I think most of the hyundai models are built at Turkey mainly for export and there is no or maybe limited trade deal between countries to cut taxes. Plant at Indonesia will be up and running soon but decrease in prices will depend on company policies and taxes and trade deal.
i heard this kona get a pretty bad name in Korea after fire incident, plus they focused more on the new ioniq5 & kia gt.. there rest of kona are for export since its pretty bad there
@@arher9598 If all cars after a fire in a similar model get a bad name there would be NO cat with a good name available...Even in my neighbourhood I've seen an (ICE) car burnbing without obvious reason....and a few times along the roads also burning (ICE) cars.
Count yourself fortunate, having only to wait a few months for your Kona EV to arrive. It is only available for ordering in a very few states of the USA.
None of rivals can compete on range. Hyundai/Kia seem to have cracked drivetrain efficiency and, as stated, the infotainment/app integration is excellent. Cheap to lease at the moment too.
ordered mine last week, hand over date set for end of next week! cant wait! I got lucky and got a cancelled order, so didnt get to pick the colour but it is in the top spec ultimate
Excellent review! It looks little similar to Kia-e-Niro to me.... Could you kindly provide a video evaluation of the Kia e-Niro model for 2021 or maybe a side-by-side comparison of the Kona and the e-Niro 2021 models?
Really think it’s worth reporting on the efficiency of any electric vehicles you test (ideally in mi/kWh) as this another area where the Kona excels. Wouldn’t simply report on the range of a petrol and diesel car and not report on the mpg. If you’re rapid charging at a cost of 35p/kWh the difference between charging a 64kWh Kona and a 99kWh Mach E is going to be significant. Plus - more efficiency = less time spent charging when most chargers in the UK are 50kW.
So looks like my e-niro 64kwh was the right choice, plus it has a 7 year warranty. The stelatlantis offerings have too small batteries, as does the MG shooting brake/station wagon/estate car.
Just checked the Kia e-Niro is £32,445 with same 64kwh battery (Kona is £32,550 for cheapest 64kwh version), personally I’d go with the e-Niro as it seems better in every department apart from looks maybe
I use 150kw charging, ElectrafyAmerica. New 350kw chargers are coming available as I write this. @42¢ kwh More economical is home charging @11.5¢kwh I can top off 3/4 charge in less than ten hours overnight. 👍
I'd always thought the E-Niro would be too big, but I walked past on not long ago and realised it was only slightly larger than a Golf. With Kia's 7 year warranty (limited, of course) but also its bigger boot/trunk and internal space, I can't think why anyone would chose this over an E-Niro!?
I did! Its the cost on lease. Best deal I was able to find comparing the Kona Ultimate to the E Niro 4+ made the e-niro between £50 and £80 a month more expensive. I would have gone for kia on terms of space, however the seats (to me) are better in the Kona.
7 year warranty is attractive! But Kona has better range even though they have the same battery and drivetrain, Kona is just a lighter and more efficient car
Im curious to see how these do over time. I know one person with a hybrid and one with an electric Hyundai. Both have had major powertrain issues within a couple years and, specifically the hybrid, a huge fight getting Hyundai USA to honor the warranty.
I wouldn't touch a hybrid. I'm about to get a kona but my partner has an ioniq and it's way more reliable than any car we have had before. The benefits outweight the cons so ridiculously I can't imagine ever ever everrrrr going back to fuel cars now.
@@richardscathouse it isn't that they're bad at all. I just mean from my own mind set of emissions etc. Having a full ev option vs hybrid now, for me I'd go ev. I still like regular cars as well. I love cars. I love learning about the ins and outside of engines etc.
I have a kona n and the electric motors on this should give it a hard edge in performance but I figure they limited what they could do so the N would stay on top. The electric would have been the one I got if not for the mark up it had.
Doesn't really matter! The motorways are incredibly busy mostly (non Covid times) and the authorities quite often drop the average (camera controlled) speed down to 60 or 50! If they could sort the charging infrastructure out on the arterial routes, EV's would be the perfect car for us in the UK. There's quite a lot of places with 7kw chargers locally now, people are just put off by the possibility of turning up to the nearest motorway charger (one unit) and it being used, broken or iced! These cars (E-Niro and Kona) would mean 400 to 450 mile trips could be carried out with only a short(ish) stop for comfort and a charge!
70mph is top speed limit and most have this with areas of the motorways going down to 60mph or 50mph for whatever reason e.g. splitting to another motorway, cut off etc. Most motorways aren't too busy all of the time as the other poster said. It depends on time of day and location. There are many points where you can go max speed and these electric cars are extremely capable at doing so with so much ease. In fact, it is so effortless you often don't realise you're doing 90mph because it is so smooth.
There is a car tester in Norway who posts on RU-vid and he runs electric tests in all kind of weather and he recently compared the iD3 and Kona e at 130kmh test which is ~80mph constant and the Kona would still have a range over 200 miles at that speed from a full charge. He also noted that the Kona e was the most reliable EV he has tested for giving an accurate range display, if it says you have 30 miles left it will do 30 miles unlike some EV's that will suddenly drop range near the end of charge
Thanks for the review. You said now you can get this car in around 2weeks. I’ve ordered mine Kona from Liverpool Hyundai in August 21 and 3 months later Am still waiting for it . I keep getting told Hyundai keep pushing back the date as it’s been ordered from the factory. I’ve ordered the top spec with the bigger battery. Am thinking of cancelling it and move over to a Kia
We have the ultimate, 69 plate. Drives fine. From Birmingham to North London and back with a full charged battery is possible, bur don't use heating or airco. Remember, everything electric used reduces your radius. We checked many cars, for us this car is fine. Perhaps the poor mans Tesla? So be it. I think the closest you get to an EV with a decent radius. I have to admit I like the HUD. Nice little gimmick.
this is just me i dont like automatic transmission cars that dont have a lever for for changing between drive , park reverse etc. Cars that only have a button press kinda of looose that feeling of driving a car. Its reallly sad because i like everything else about this car:).
What none of these competitors can't do is the Tesla charging network. You can drive any where and not have issues, be able to chargeup at a sensible cost. Ionity are offering charge stations which make Evs more expensive to fill up than a 1980s diesel.
Weird. I've never had to pay anything other than my ev card, which is once year, to charge. I've come across charge points you pay for but never had an issue jsut driving for 5mins to find another. Maybe this will arise at some point for me. But yeah, it doesn't need to become way more accessible. It will, it has to legally the closer we get to fuel cars being stopped. But it is annoying right now. We needed to save the world about 10 years ago, not in 10years time. So make it available to people now and affordable.
YES!! They recalled and replaced the problem packs by VIN number, with the updated packs. They corrected the manufacturing flaw that caused the fires. I own a 2021 model with the redesigned pack. No worries!
"...but now you can see it's got a much sleeker front end..." ...THAT IS COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY HAVING THE CHARGE PORT COVER RIGHT THERE! What were they thinking?
lucky i dont care about all them other cars else this guy would confuse the hell out of me lol this car ok but another car is better i like how this car drives but others drive better like wtf is going on just tell us what you think without comparing it to others
Surprisingly you do not tell the 10-80% charge for the KonaE at a 100KW charger (77KW charging which reduces when reaching 67% to 57KW (in my konaE ) ca 40 to 45 minutes. Because when the ID 3 can find 100KW chargers in the UK , the KonaE can also find them. Existing Infrastructure for charginbg is for both cars the same.... My real world range in the Kona is , in summer, the full WLTP range at the at this momens maximum al;lowed speed (in the Netherlands) or 100 km/h...or the full 300 miles. International driving, through Germany, thee are enough 100kw+ chargers. My maximum day trip is 1250 km in 17 hours includinbg charging times. Not everywhere at 77 kw because still lack of 100KW charges in Poland. It is correct that this car is only good for maximum 2 p[ersons on longer travels. Little children are less a problem if you put on a hook at the car and a extra luggag box on that hook. The hook can also be used for bike transport. Not for towing , that is not allowed.
Good car but Hyundai is not the best company to deal with if something goes wrong! Believe me I am in legal limbo trying to make them pay me back for a rental when the car was almost 3 months in the shop due the battery recall. Stay away from Hyundai! Did my research and seems to be a pattern.
Is this guy some kind of stupid, he said if you charge this car on a 50 kw charger it takes 64 minutes to charge this car 20 to 80% but if you get a Tesla you can charge it in the half of the time in a 100 kw of a charger, ofc it goes faster on a faster charger but he didnt say it goes faster to charge the kona on a faster charger, lol.
