An absolutely great set of images Griff, genuinely bloody good. Many of the final images from the quarry, bear a perspective, I've never seen before, spot on, top man. Also, I have to say, the first image in the video of the church in the sea, really is good, again, kudos.

Great progress on your project. The ones that, in my opinion, tell the story of dereliction most powerfully are those focusing on details - fallen roof beams, tipped machinery, the abandoned shed with goats, the roofless interior, etc. The sweeping landscapes and far views work well on their own, but may not convey the message with comparable impact. Thanks for your excellent videos, David, and cheers to the lovely Mrs. G.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Hello George, thanks so much for your feedback. I think you're absolutely right, the detail shots have much more impact and I need to work harder on placing buildings in their context whilst retaining the impact of the subject.. 😊👍

all the best for the New Year mate , I think you RPS project would make a very strong base for a book or as inclusions in a book studying early industry in the Welsh mountains

@DGriffGallery Год назад
Many thanks Barry, although it's fair to say there are already many many very good books on Welsh industrial heritage, which is where I got my inspiration from for the project in the first place so I'm not sure there'd be room for yet another one 😊👍

All fabulous David but there is just something about disused rails that get me every time, I think it must be the knowing that once they would of transported you to almost anywhere whilst now they are just dormant awaiting for nature to reclaim them, that one was my winner.
@DGriffGallery

Many thanks, Neil, I think that shot is just a placeholder at the moment as the quality isn't the right standard. It's taken at the disused town station in Llangefni, Anglesey. I grabbed it while I was waiting in the car park for the lovely Mrs G to return from shopping. So I need to go back and retake that 😊👍

Happy New Year, Dave! I enjoyed seeing your RPS project very much. I particularly like the variety in your compositions. Even if there was some similarity in the buildings, you took an original approach to each one. I’d comment on your processing, but that’s always excellent. I’ll look forward to the finished project and whatever interim steps you care to share.

Hi David, I hope you are having a wonderful time and hopefully more during next year 😊! Love your images for RPS, but I'm not a big fan of square crops when it comes to showing off vista or beautiful landscape. I feel there more to see in the images and missing out on something more interesting 🤔 Please don't get me wrong, totally respect 🙏 your work David and you know I'm a big fan of your work for the past 4yr mate. Cheers 🍻

Hi Bernard, happy New Year to you and yours. I totally agree with you with regards to the aspect ratio when it comes to wider landscape shots. But I think this project being very specifically targeted should hopefully benefit from a tighter compositional constraint. 😊👍

Happy New Year. I think changing to square crop might be an inspired move, some great images already, especially my old dog walking area of Porth Wen. I quite like the old buildings at Penmaenmawr quarry, although I've only taken 2 photos of them and never had any decent light, although the last time the ponies posed for me so made up for lack of light.

Firstly congratulations on Episode 200, I think it was probably in the high teens when I came across your vlogs. I’ve been thinking a lot about your ‘all square crop’ presentation idea over the last couple of days and having been through the images a couple of times, wonder if it is a bit limiting - some of the images seemed to cry out for a bit more space to me. Sticking to one crop, say 4x3 or 4x5, horizontal and vertical, would give you both some flexibility and consistency. Anyway, Happy New Year, I’ll look forward to seeing how your project develops.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Cheers Brian, and Happy New Year to you and yours. I thought about the options for a consistent aspect ratio and felt there would still be too much of disconnect when displaying landscape and portrait in the submission. And when I'm working on more images knowing the constraints of the 1:1 will allow me to concentrate on the composition accordingly. Quite a few of the ones I showed are reference shots for revisits, or will be dropped altogether before I complete the project and make the submission 😊👍

First off Happy New Year to you and yours. Great images as usual. The one taken at the Albert Dock took me back a few years as I have stood in that vicinity when it was derelict and the Dock was just mud, the whole place was a bit of playground as kids. Many thanks, David. I had certainly considered working in black and white for this project, but as it would be quite a departure from my regular work, which makes much use of colour grading, I think I would undermine my chances as I am far less experienced in high quality monochrome imagery. 😊👍

Hi Dave, Happy New Year to you and Mrs G. Initially I was a little doubtful about the square crop idea, but I think it really works, as the square crop makes the eye ( for me at least ) work a little harder and investigate the images more carefully. I fully expect that your project will make the grade, but even if it doesn't, I'd be more than happy with any one of those in today's gallery. All the best for '23

Some very nice images, In respect of your RPS project I wonder if you are repeating ideas several times. I am referring to the landscape through a window frame (done twice) and the winding drum which is used in three images. I am not sure how those would be accepted by the judging panel.
@DGriffGallery

Happy New Year David and all the best for 2023. My 2 favourites from your review of '22 were the Nantlle Ridge and the Tryfan one - but they are all fabulous shots. It was good to have an update on your RPS project. I really love square crop photos and it will definitely give your submission a unifying look and feel. Thanks for sharing the photos at the end too - some strong images there, but for me, a couple lacked compositional impact and would possibly benefit from a tighter crop or a different composition? Also, have you thought of doing them all in a similar style B&W (e.g. moody B&W with strong contrasts, or a deliberately grainy B&W with softer contrasts?) I don't wish to sound critical as you are a much better photographer than I, but I hope the feedback helps and comes across as constructive. I think your re-assessment of the original idea will definitely benefit the project - good luck with it in 2023. Kind Regards, Phil
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Thanks a lot, Phil, really appreciate your constructive feedback. I think you are absolutely correct that there are one or two images in that much weaker than the others and will need rethinking. Although I do think that the subject matter works quite well, so I will probably revisit them accordingly. I did consider monochrome also with more artistic processing, but as that isn't really my style, I lack the expertise to make these images as effectively as I can when I deploy the sort of colour grading which I use regularly. So, after some thought, I decided to stick with what I know, and with what represents my other photography more effectively 😊👍

Regarding the ARPS, your foregrounds are so strong have you thought about a vertical aspect ratio (4:3) instead of square?
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Hello David, yes I thought long and hard about what aspect ratio to work to, and settled on 1:1 after looking at the images I'm considering at the moment. Also quite a few of the ones I showed are reference shots for revisits, or will be dropped altogether before I complete the project and make the submission 😊👍
@jamesdecross1035
@jamesdecross1035 Год назад
Interesting what you say about the RPS project. As a question, if you did choose to go for square-crop, could you also include 1:2 and 1:3 ratio? Perhaps as a triptych. They could either one image broken-up or several closely tied, I guess. Anyway, looking forward to seeing your results!
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery Год назад
Hello James, that's a good question. Unfortunately, it's quite difficult to present subsets within the collection because they either have to be displayed as prints on a panel, or through a digital running order, one at a time. I think in either submission format, creating subsets can be quite dangerous as it's difficult to indicate in any way that this is intended to be a subgroup of the overall submission portfolio. So I decided to stay clear of that pitfall in order to maximise my chances of success, such as they are! 😊👍
