Got my hands on Chevy's most capable full size truck, the Silverado ZR2. Unlike it's competitors in this class, the ZR2 is more of a mountain goat than a desert hare. It's narrower than the Raptor and TRX and has locking front and rear diffs, making it more capable for tight forest trails. But how does it fare at high speeds?
Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.

It is amazing how it climbed up in 4Hi using only the brake based traction control. Plenty of low end torque from the naturally aspirated V8 with no disturbing turbo lag/torque surge, which supposedly the Tundra and F-150s have (?), and no transmission overheating which the rebel suffered from. In 4low and with the two lockers on, it just walks up the hill as expected. Great engineering by GM, and another excellent review by you. Thanks for showing how the truck performs in all these modes.

You pretty much nailed it. I don't remember really having lag/surge issues with the Tundra for the most part, but I did notice it on occasion. Thanks!

GM has “brake-lock” figured out as well as most - actually, better than most. Im glad you were able to demonstrate this.

The 2022 is certainly better than the previous school years with the brake system. Thanks for the support!

It's the same as Toyota ATRAC and from the look they've mirrored it to modern ATRAC.

I believe Land Rover was first in 1998 with the Discovery, then Toyota in the Land Cruiser in 2000, Jeep in about '05 or '06. Since then just about every manufacturer uses the ABS to double as a limited slip system. Chevy has been deliberately less aggressive, although it seems for 2022 they may have made it more aggressive and effective.

Good review, I love that truck! The trail is a fun one, too! Took my old '06 Pathfinder up there above S-ville more than a few times.

Thanks for watching! It's a decent spot to get the basics down.

You can put camera button on main screen. I did it on mine

Thanks for sharing, I'd still prefer a physical button, but if you can put it on the home screen that makes it much easier!

I’m eager to see you test a ‘23 Colorado with that 2.7-turbo. I think GM is screwing up by dropping the diesel, but as I have zero experience with the 2.7, I do want to see it tested.
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 года назад
I've driven it in a Silverado once, and I hated the initial turbo lag. Otherwise it felt pretty good. I don't know how the updated 2022 version performs, but hopefully they've improved on the initial turbo lag issue.

@@EngineAdventures … You tested a Colorado ZR2 about three months ago, and it was impressive, even with the V-6. I’m interested to see if GM has tuned that 2.7 to perform off-road. I guess I’m old-fashioned … I’m just not crazy about a 4-cylinder gasser for off-road. But GM has been doing some fine work lately, so I want to see what they have done to their 2.7 … Looking forward to your test !

I was just in this exact area today in a 23 Colorado zr2 and it made the silverado look pretty heavy in comparison on some of those climbs. Engine power was never a concern. It's still impressive though because there's no way I would take my z71 up some of them.

I've test 2023 Colorado Trail Boss, hoping to have the videos up of it soon.

You can control speed during hill decent using cruise control +/- buttons

Thanks! I thought I had that figured out, but maybe that was after I filmed this portion.

Yeah my biggest complaint is the travel, but I love the lockers on mine and I'm imagining the Chevy Performance stuff will come out for it like on the Colorado for longer travel suspension
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures Год назад
I know a few people that would like to have the front locker option be available on every trim level, I'm one of them. More wheel travel would be helpful, but it does generally make the truck wider, always trade offs. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@EngineAdventures Oh I agree, but it's just like Chevy and every other manufacturers to pad their margins on a truck that's basically fully loaded. I would like to have them put that ESLD in the Trailboss LT since it's a nice feature to just be locked up in the rear. My whole complaint about Chevy anymore is you can't factory order like you could in the 90's where you could order a 454 in work truck trim with the Z71 axle, Transfercase and skid plates. My dream truck just because it's cheaper and more of a running around pickup would be a shortbed 2door with a bench seat AND the 6.2 with the 10 speed. I would imagine that would be a fun truck.

Tenacious four-wheel drive system, superb hill decent control. to slow is better than that puckering feeling. All it needs now is a disconnecting sway bar system. It would be nice if it was offered in a truck with less luxury. Now it's time to put this system on the Suburban. Thumbs up EA.
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures Год назад
I'm sure the anti-sway bar disconnect would help, but I wonder how much on this independent suspension setup. Thanks for the support!

Good point. The 4Runner TRD Off-road has the option, but it is removed from the TRD PRO version. Beautiful truck, but priced beyond the Powerwagon. Makes no sense, unless you want a Chevy or towing is your thing.

KDSS is great, but in my testing with the Land Cruiser it seems to really flex the rear axle, and add a little to the front, but not much.

You should always be at a complete stop when engaging your lockers. Sometimes they may bind up and not lock in, just roll a few inches and retry...while totally stopped. Otherwise great video, that thing really has some traction, very nice truck!

Thanks for watching and commenting! The only thing that really matters when engaging a locker is that both wheels on that axle need to be spinning at the same speed. I haven't actually talked with GM about how these lockers work specifically, but all the ones I've seen move an engagement or locking collar over a side gear to lock it to the differential case. If both shafts leaving the differential are rotating at the same speed then the case and side gear are also moving at the same speed. ARB and Yukon air lockers slide the collar with air pressure of course. The Eaton E locker uses an electro magnet and a ramp and ball that pushes the locking collar into place locking the side gear and case together. This system will disengage momentarily when changing direction of motion (fwd to reverse) because the ball has to go down the ramp to the open position, and then back up the ramp to the other side. The OX locker is a mechanical locker (with air and electric add ons), using a cable that physically pushes the locking collar into place. It also has a lockout bolt that you can put in to push the locking collar in place in case there are problems with the cable, electric, or air system. I'm sure there are other selectable lockers that I don't know about, but all of these can be engaged at any speed as long as the axle shafts are rotating at the same speed. If a locker doesn't engage you need differential action between the two axle shafts. This is best done by driving slowly while turning, that way one side will spin faster than the other and the locking collar can find the grooves it needs to be able to lock. Thanks again for watching!

275/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler territories? That's what's on this truck.

If this truck would have 6.6 duramax diesel or 3.0 liter diesel, I would buy it. Sorry but 6.2 gas engine with 10 mpg is too pricey for nowadays fuel prices But I like the truck interior and material 🔥👍🏻
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 2 года назад
I agree the 3.0 should be an optional engine choice. The 6.6 is too heavy for this application. Thanks for watching!
