Bader and Adrian made a compare test some weeks ago on channel "high side", and to the surprise of Bader and Adrian, the SV performed very well, showing a very good equilibrium on the track and winning the fastest duo bike on the country-like road

Hi Zack, not sure if you read the comments on youtube or when you grab questions from instagram. I was wondering what your inseam was, instead of your height. Personally, I'm 5'6" but with long limbs, inseam about 31 inches. Just a suggestion to add that measurement in the future for people to better guage how they might sit on that scoot.

One of my first dates with my (now) wife was not shared on a SV, but it was chasing her on her SV650S and me on my Ninja. It’s was a fantastic bike that was incredibly flexible for her for everything from track days to light touring. Such a forgiving and easy engine to ride. I hopped on it a bunch of times, and it was always a joy.

The SV650 is perfection. I can't even tell you to how many people I've recommended them, but I've never had a single person come back and complain. It's the quintessence of motorcycle.

I will speak up then as the exception. I owned a '06 sv650 for 3 years and 25000 miles, for commuting and weekend rides. While I did like the engine, everything else about it, especially the ergos I did not like. I am 6ft2 and tried different handlebars, even a 2 inch higher seat but it always felt much too small. Out of all motorcycles I have owned and sold, the sv is the only one I never regretted selling. I truly disliked it and eventually had to be honest with myself and move on. Easily the worst motorcycle I have owned.

I’m on my 3rd one now, used for my daily commute. I can safely say they are the biggest bargain out there, I’ve not had one problem with any of them. Built in Japan unlike most of its rivals the quality is excellent. The engine is super flexible in town and far more interesting to ride than its parallel twin competitors. I’ve been really happy with mine and find myself using it far more than my other more expensive bikes.

I have an 09 sfv650 and it’s my first bike. Even 3 years later I still live it and plan to keep it after getting a second slightly more powerful bike. It’s the Japanese Ducati Monster.

Great review Zach, one correction. You should NOT do wheelies for 'miles and miles' on an SV. It is well known in the SV owners community that the engine tends to loose oil pressure from extended wheelies. Hence why you never see them as stunt bikes. Short lofts like in the review are probably alright.

True. Raising the front wheel anywhere above 50 cm from the ground will have the front cylinder starving of oil. BTW, I own a gen.3 SV since 2017 and I'm still in love with it.

@@lucazolla5193 SV650's in general are awesome, any gen. Mine was an 03, first year of fuel injection. I wasn't thinking to get rid of it but was looking for an adventure bike. Found someone willing to trade me an 08 Vstrom 1000 which I couldn't pass up. After awhile I missed the sporty naked bike feel so I found an early Triumph Speed Triple 955i. That definitely cured my desires but I still remember the SV fondly. The SV was also the most reliable bike I have owned so far (out of 10 or so).

I feel like the SV is not really aging. It is just a good recipe that worked 20years ago just as well as it does today. Great bike, Great daily ride. And a really fun to watch video from you!

Well.. No its not, i own a stock 1,6 Miata and its a blast on small tracks and twisty roads becuse the balance of the chassi and the rev happy engine that makes it feel like it is faster then it is and creates a flow in the drivning. I also have a sv650s and its just the dull. The chassi is just soft, the engine is just mellow, no lowend grunt and not rewarding to rev. It goes faster then it feels. It might be Good for fast times at the Track but not for Good times. I feel a bit fooled by youtube, but hey it made me write my first comment so i goes it won ;)

I was actually referring more to the volume of miatas and SV650’s at the track. They are both super popular and great grassroots track vehicles, either racing or lapping days. And you will go less bankrupt with either of these choices…

I love these daily riders and pro tip, if you have RU-vid premium these videos are great to "watch" audio only while working. Zack's charismatic commentary paired with the sweet sounds of motorcycles are the perfect combo

Nothing really wrong with this bike. After 20 years, it nails the basics hard and is Suzuki reliable! With pads, a can, a seat that works with the rider's height, and some LED replacement bulbs...good to go! Really, this is the kind of bike you can make into what you want it to be. A keeper. My first motorcycle was a 1st gen SV650, only ever having ridden the MSF course TU250X before that. I sold it chasing the sirens song of an inline 4 sportbike. I spent quite a while trying to convince myself that I enjoyed the sportbike more but after a few years of that I came back to the SV. They really are great bikes and hold a very special place in my heart.

Wow same but my safety course only had 125s and we didn’t really get into 2nd gear. Bought a 99 SV650 and should have never sold it. The CBR600F4i was my teenage dream but years of probation changed my mind. Lol I’ve thought about getting a newer one every few years.

The SV650 along with the V-Strom 650 are both great bikes for the price. I got a 2020 V-Strom new a couple years ago (discounted $2k off MSRP), and I freaking love this machine. The motor is a real gem and super reliable. Hard to beat that "Made In Japan" solid build quality. Sure it's doesn't have all the fancy stuff you get on some newer machines, but I for one don't miss it.

2017 SV650 was my first moto and I don’t think I’ll ever let it go even as I enjoy other bikes. In April 2022, I rode my SV from Nashville through the Ozarks and down to Austin to see the MotoGP races. Not a single issue. I had a blast! Rode back through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. One day i hope to take it on track at Barber or maybe even National Corvette Museum. Glad you still like the SV, Zack!

I bought SV650 last August as my 2nd bike. A perfect bike for daily commuting. Full tank can exceed 350km before completely empty.

My very first bike was a brand new '19 SV650. I absolutely loved that thing but traded it for an MT-09 and then eventually for a Tiger 1200. I miss the SV and would own another in a heartbeat. Those engines are bulletproof too. They've been known to go 100K+ miles especially in the VStrom 650s.

I have a 2019 SV. One reason I picked that year was the upgrade from 2 pot to 4 pot front brakes, worthwhile I think. As for the seat, I thought about a change as it is on the firm side as you point out. However, the other ergonomic change I wanted to make was to the bars and that benefited the seat. I prefer European style touring bars on most bikes. After fitting some Renthal ultra-lows not only did the highway speed comfort improve with respect to wind pressure but the firm seat became more than acceptable! The more leaned forward riding position put the seat support more ideally on my sit bones rather than the fleshy part of my backside. Firm seats can be comfortable if you connect with them in the right place. Sorry for the long-winded comment but this bar change made this bike a keeper for me.

Growing up, my dad and uncles all had suzuki 750s. Loved the look. Adult now, started getting into bikes a couple years ago and saw this beauty. Brought back memories. Finally, 2021 got my msf cert. Was going to get a Mt07. Watching this video, it's gonna be the sv650 in a couple of days for me. Thanks.

I thought it was a joke when he said “you could wheelie this thing for miles and miles”. It’s pretty well known on the SV’s that the front cylinder will be starved of oil when the oil sloshes away from the pickup. That’s why SV riders are usually told to keep their wheelies brief.

I've owned a bunch of bikes. My SV-650 was one of the best bikes I've ever owned. Depending on your style it could be the only bike you ever own. Enough torque and character to last a lifetime, and with an exhaust the note is sublime. It's simplicity makes it amazing. All the techno wizardry on so many modern bikes is just too much for what people need or want. The SV-650 is one of the greatest bikes ever made.

My SV650S from 2009 shares the garage with a first generation Monster and a first generation Street Triple R, and as good as both those bikes are, I believe as a complete package the SV is still at the top. I have over the years installed K-Tech inserts in the forks, an upgraded shock, and; braided lines with premium pads and it is a bike that lacks nothing. It can cruise all day at 80MPH smoothly and carve turns as good as anything out there. If I were forced to have only one bike it would be the SV.

I love my 2019 ABS. Was then brand new, $7,400 out the door and delivered to my driveway. Upgraded seat and shock, and added an MRA fly screen. I have ridden a few other bikes since but have always come back to the SV650 because it is pure unadulterated analog fun and has had zero issues. Plus it is roomy enough for my 6'2" frame. If you are into sophisticated electronic rider aids and TFT displays, look elsewhere. If you cant enjoy this bike, ask yourself whether you have a pulse.

I bought the Suzuki Tuck Roll seat. Frankly, it does not add a huge amount of comfort and there may be better options if comfort is what you are after. It raises the seat height by 1/2 inch. But it looks good IMO. For the shock i installed an Öhlins which was quite expensive. But i wanted something a bit more compliant for the bad roads on the east coast roads in the US with countless potholes and stretches of broken pavement. I was even considering getting an ADV bike for that reason but I like the SV too much to sell it. Best of luck and ride safely. @@JosM1599

With so many middleweights having gone down the parallel twin road (presumably for the lower manufacturing cost), this little Suzuki is a legitimately interesting alternative.

Yes, the SV650 is definitely a classic. It is about as close to perfection as one can get for a mid-sized motorcycle. It can do it all, except off-road stuff. Street/road, yes, everything. Race-track, touring, daily use, sport-riding. What a great bike for everyone. I love them. I had a SV650S, loved it. I've been riding for 54 years now, and the SV650 is in the top-5 bikes of all-time favorite, past and present. I've gotten around 70 mpgs on regular gas, not beating it. I had replaced the exhaust on mine, and it sounded really bad-ass Ducati like. One of the greatest bikes off all time, even today. I would say, to sum it all up...The bike is loaded with European character, exactly like the Mazda MX5 is loaded with European character.

Great to see the SV here. It’s such an awesome bike. The engine is so good and forgiven. It’s a bike that it will never let you down. No fancy electronics, cheap maintenance and loads of parts to make it your own.

52,000 miles on my ‘07 SVS, including 15,000 Bay Area commuting in the past 2 years. When new used it as a track bike, with suspension and brake upgrades. 3x at CSS on it. Able to lap faster in C class at Thunderhill than 600s and Liter bikes. Good for learning track skills. Rock solid reliable bike and engine.

I had a 2003 SV650 which I bought specifically as a track bike. I put an Ohlins shock and a pretty trick fork cartridge kit in it, some sticky tires and a yoshimura exhaust, a few other little things and it was a near perfect bike to me

Had the SV650 as my first bike. Rode it everywhere. Awesome bike. Eventually switched to a sport-tourer for more long-distance comfort.

I did the same and I miss the SV. Pink glasses probably, but I have great memories with this bike, while sport touring bike (a VFR for me) only makes sense on long rides or high speeds, while a loooot of my riding is below 140 kph and shorter than 300 km

Many thanks to you, Zack and Revzilla! Just bought a mint condition SV650X couple days ago, after watching this vid a couple of times. I figured it was the perfect no-nonsense bike for me, and it sure is. I'm absolutely over the moon with the looks, the sound, the flickabillity and the smoothness! Power is just the perfect amount in my eyes. Just wish there was more steering lock, as getting it in my garage is a struggle. And I didn't think anything of the easy-start feature, but actually it's quite nice to have lol. Can't wait to do many a miles for many a years to come, can't see myself ever parting with it.

Btw, I've heard of an issue with the front cylinder being starved of oil when you wheelie it. Haven't had the issue with mine but be warned in case you end up with an S\ 325

Zack, I actually bought an sv after watching yours and Ari's review back in your motorcyclist mag days. It was a great first bike for me, I've since sold it but for what it's worth I use to get ~300km per tank.

True that. My record was almost 340km after an easy peasy ride on the highway. I now have a '18 Street Triple RS which is better in every single way, but I still miss the cheap street thrills of the SV. It was a blast on the track, too!

I've had a blue SV650S since new in 2002. I put a pipe on it at the first service for more power and a great sound and it's never been dropped and has a FSH. I love it more now than ever because it has sentimental value and I can actually use most of its performance in the real world. Its looks have aged well and it's only done 40K kms, so the engine is still very strong.

Great date with my then girlfriend now wife: Rode 2 up from Jacksonville FL to Cape Canaveral on a whim to see a rocket launch. Averaged somewhere around 100mph on the way down to make it in time for the launch, pulled up just in time to see it light up. Rode home, got caught in a thunderstorm and had to dry off at a truck stop sipping coffee while out riding gear dried off draped over the bike. Love my SV, wonderful ride every single time.

The engine in the SV is such a gem. The rest of the bike is long in tooth a bit, but I'd like to see that engine into a better package. I'm more of an inline 4 sport bike guy, but the SV engine, I can't praise it enough. If I'd buy the SV I'd try to put a GSXR 600 front end on it.

Id get a yss fork kit with preload adjustability, springs and emulators, DIY modded right side up works much better for the b roads and mountain passes near my backyard (I dont track). Agree the engine is the bees knees!

@@180FiftyFive Sorry, I did not. And the only parallel twins I rode are the Kawi Versys and BMW 800, but neither with crossplane crankshaft. I read about some complaining about MT-07 vibrating a bit at certain RPMs. I had the SV motor in my V-Strom and I remember it being very good for long rides, but I can't really ofer any comparison with MT-07.

Man I love these reviews, in fact I just bought a new bike a couple of months ago because of a review Zach did a year or so ago. My buddy had a 2017 or 2018 sv650 and when i took it for a ride I was impressed , it was comfortable, fun and way smoother of a ride than I’d ever expect with this size bike, though it is a smaller engine than I would shop for but this bike is an incredible bike for the money and I have even told a few friends who are on small300 to 400 bikes to move up and look into this bike

I have been riding an SV650 for a few years, and it's a fantastic bike and not that expensive. The bike has enough go for commuting, and the ABS can come in handy. An enjoyable weekend ride also.

Apparently. Suzuki is planning on axing the V twin. In favor of parallel twin. Suzuki is dropping the ball on that one. That V twin is amazing.

My first bike was a blue '01 SV650 naked, bought it off a coworker who was the original owner. A shorter fellow like me, he lowered it and installed a full Yosh exhaust and a jet kit...beautiful bike and it sounded soooo good, like a Harley on steroids. Everything you said about this new SV is what I remember all of those years ago; it's an approachable machine, it's fun to ride, has a lot of character, and is simple and reliable. Ended up selling mine 11 years ago as I wasn't riding it much, but I will wholeheartedly recommend this bike to anyone looking for a good all-around sport bike!

To be fair to the nodding Harley rider, he was sitting at an intersection. His hands may have been busy with the brake and clutch. I have bikes ranging from a Helix scooter to a Dyna. I can't help but notice other Harley riders that will waive when I am on my Harley, but ignore me when I waive from my other bikes, especially the scooter. I am just saying that being on a Harley doesn't make him a jerk, but he could be.

I love Suzuki because of the simplicity and all those "doesn't haves". I remember when these hit the show room, I came close to buying one, I did get a 1st year DL1000 V-Strom and those Suzuki V-Twins are just fantastic in how they deliver power. One of these days I'd like to get a SV1000N if I ever find a clean one at the right price.

I learned to ride on one, I struggled alot and was absolutely miserable during my training. But when I got back on one 3 months after getting plenty of km’s under my belt it was a pleasure to get on again.

Very Nice Review! Chasing numbers and features has and can get many into a bike they may not be happy with over time. This bike doesn't get many boxes checked if that is is something one is pursuing. But! There are boxes that most don't use or see. The ones that talk about long term use, reliability, predictable road manners, fun factor, ease of maintenance and so on. This bike has checks in boxes that all too many don't. I believe you have covered almost all of these boxes in this review. Good Job!

I had a 2001 sv650s as a first big bike and something I didn't appreciate at the time is just how easy it was to work on. All bikes ive had since then have been annoying at best in comparison. Everything was simple and straight forward to remove and replace. There were very few things I had to get a mechanic to do for me. Solid bike, cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to maintain and great to learn on. I'd recommend it to anyone starting out or needs a workhorse.

That stock sound is impressive. I had mine with cheap aftermarkets because one of the previous owners decided to saw off a part of the pipe so I never knew what the stock exhaust sounds like

I have a 17' with 23k miles that I commute on. Not a single issue and it's so much fun to ride. I absolutely love the lack of bullshit electronics, menus, rider modes etc. Pure simplicity and a pure experience. Also, very easy to work on and relatively cheap parts.

And here I am on my 3rd SV, a '21 model and the best SV ever. This one compared to my '16 finally has much better brakes and with the torque now lower in the rpm the engine is back to being a fun torquey machine. With a few cheap mods this is a fantastic bike. Cheap, nice looking, brakes well, has a much better engine and chassis/suspension than its direct rivals, perfect reliability (unlike my other bike lol), insurance also cheap...This is an incredible bike. After looking for many other commuter/occasional touring bike to complement my beloved Ducati Monster 1100 Evo I ended up going back to this one again. Nothing else in a rational price bracket for an everyday bike fit. I'm really glad I went for it, might pick up a used gsx8s in a few years if I like it.

I freakin LOVE the engine. I've owned a FZ07(put 40k miles on it), and now I own a SV(8k miles so far). I've heard people say the FZ/MT engine is more fun, but I have to disagree. Yes the MT has more of the wheelie punch, but it's boring at higher revs. I remember really having to get on it to pass, and it really lost power in those higher revs. The SV engine spreads the power better, and I have no issues at the higher revs.

I finally made the jump from dual sports with a $500 01 SV650 last year, after rebuilding the carbs and cleaning it up I think it's a fantastic bike overall. Glad to see they didn't lose the essence of the original bikes.

I've got a 2009 SVs (fully faired and clip-ons) and I absolutely love it. Frankly as I get older, the standard would suit me better, but for flowing backroads around me, it's a riot. I've ridden all kinds of crazy powerful stuff, but for any rider, these things are FUN. It's the ultimate 'greater than the sum of its parts' bike. Also bulletproof. I do most of my own work and these are easy to work/learn on. Exotic? Nah. But it doesn't break!

I have the second gen . The first generation that got fuel injection . It uses 7,5 L / 100 km or 31 mpg if I ride spirited . Aside from the enormous fuel consumption, Im still in love with my naked SV :)

Bought my '05 SV650 as an upgrade from my first "big" bike (A '96 GS500E) . It's not the biggest or fanciest of 'bikes but it's perfect for what I want from a bike. It's simple, comfy (I'm just over 6ft), fun, torquey and, with the aftermarket can, sounds great. After 6 years with it, I can't think of anything I'd want to replace it with... A few I'd add to the fleet if I had the room, but nothing to fill the SV650 sized space it occupies in the garage.

Bought a new SV650s in 1999. Still love it. The S model has the bikini fairing that works really well. Have an aftermarket exhaust but that's the only change its needed.

The 'snatchiness' of the fueling gets more mellow after the first servicing. I'm 3500km's into my 22' and it is smooth as butter.

I learned to ride on one of these. I liked it so much almost bought one at my local dealership, but they had a super low mileage matt black Z650. Ican highly recommend to new riders or those who coming back after a long break. The clutch prevents you from stalling, one touch start -there will be no embarassing moment for new riders. And the can sounds really good despite being a factory one. If you haven't yet, give it a test ride.
