2022 Trek Top Fuel 5 (My son's new bike!)

My son is now 5'9" and has outgrown his 2020 Vitus VR 27. After 2 top 10 finishes this season in PICL we reward him with a 2022 Trek Top Fuel 5. We purchased this bike at a Trek Store and they honored the NICA student athlete discount.
The Top Fuel 5 is aluminum and their cheapest model but that does not mean it does not have some solid specs. It comes with a Shimano Deore 1x12 drivetrain, Rock Shox Recon fork and TransX 150mm dropper post.

Very thorough, thank you for showing every part. I was curious about the dropper lever and I heard ab out those cranks being different on delivery. Good stuff I'm doing a lot of research and wanted to see what this color looks like and it's pretty damn nice. Glossy black on black? It's legit trail geometry with short travel, super interested in this.

Yep, definitely a clear coat on the black paint to make it glossy.

Congrats for the new bike! I am in search of my next bike and currently I have to choose between this Top Fuel 5 and the outgoing Giant Trance 3. They've basically share the same drivetrain Deore 12s + Praxis crank. However the Giant has Fox DPS shock (115mm Maestro), And 130mm Marzocchi fork with 34mm stanchions. It also has better Shimano MT400 brakes, aggressive TLR Maxxis tires on 25mm ID rims and is about 1kg ligher. Last but not least it is about 400$ cheaper. In terms of geometry they are pretty much comparable. You've already done your choise. Given your experience so far would you choose the Top Fuel again over the Trance 3?

First off, this bike is my son's, however I did all of the research. The Giant Trance and Stance were definitely on my radar. All things being equal I would have probably chosen the Giant (I've ridden them since 2002). However, I went with the Trek because of their support of NICA here in the states (my son races in a NICA league). They offer a significant discount to coaches and student athletes. Lastly, the bike was promised and delivered within a week. I believe the Top Fuel is going to have a steeper seat tube angle which may make it a better climber. However, I think you'll be happy with either bike. Good luck!

Considering getting one in red. How is it in terms of climbing? The not-full lockout of the rear shock kinda worries me

Full disclosure, I've never ridden this bike since it is my son's. However, when I have set the shock to firm it is pretty stiff. It also has a fairly steep seat tube angle. It's hard to judge if he is a better climber with this bike but overall his skills have progressed significantly over his previous bike which was a hard tail.

there is no need to upgrade anything on this bike....had fuel ex 5 with similar components. Rode the hell out of it for a year without issues. silly amount of spacers under the bar.....if it feels like it's understeering or he is washing out often, swap one or two to the top of the stack/ great bike

I agree there is no need for upgrades. So far the handling is great but that’s a great point about the spacers.

@@DKRK279 yeah, it's crazy what a difference a 1/4 spacer can do. Between that and bar roll/sweep, handling and hand comfort can be tuned perfectly

The Fuel EX is a trail bike and has more travel. The Top Fuel is down country, less travel so basically an XC bike. It depends on your riding style and the trails you typically ride. If you are more of an aggressive rider and local trails are aggressive go with the EX. Honestly the bikes are very close now with the Top Fuel redesign for 2022 so you can’t go wrong either way.

2 (full size) car detached with a storage/work area where i park my mower/bikes and have a work bench. It’s insulated but no HVAC. Honestly not sure the square footage.
