Speaker Bios
Vishal Khandelwal is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh Department of History of Art and Architecture. He specializes in modern and contemporary art, architecture, design, and visual culture with a focus on South Asia. His work has been supported by the 2020 Carter Manny Writing Award from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, a Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship (2020-21) from the University of Michigan, and stipends from the Decorative Arts Trust and the Rockefeller Archive Center. Vishal is a participant in the 2021-22 Art Schools of Asia program organized by the Asia Art Archive with support from the Getty Foundation, the Design Histories of Modern and Contemporary India symposium series organized by Tapati Guha-Thakurta and Ushmita Sahu, and the Craft History Workshop organized by Antonia Behan and Colin Fanning with support from Queen’s University. His article, "Nelly Sethna and the Reception of Textiles between the United States and India" was published in the November 2021 issue of The Journal of Modern Craft. At the University of Pittsburgh, Vishal teaches classes on South Asian Art, Modern Art, and World Art.
Sonali Dhingra earned her doctorate in the History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University, specializing in South and Southeast Asian Art. Her dissertation, “Cult and Colossus: Buddhist sculpture from Odisha in History and Memory (ca. eighth to twelfth centuries)” considers the role of scale and materiality in the making and reception of devotional sculpture from Buddhist sites in Odisha. She holds a B.A. in History from Delhi University, an M.A. in Ancient Indian History from Jawaharlal Nehru University and an M.Phil. in History from Delhi University. Her dissertation research and language study were supported by grants from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Institute of Indian Studies, The Charles Wallace Trust and the South Asia Institute at Harvard. In 2021, she was awarded the ACLS/Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Buddhist Studies.
