I have a Volvo xc40 recharge. At best I can say Android automotive is a work in progress. I expected that being Google it would be a ton better than the petrol xc40 I had before but no, it’s just as bad but in different ways. Actually it lacks key features which makes it worse. First, Google maps doesn’t include speed camera warnings which the non-Android versions have. This is a basic requirements and given that this can be found on regular google maps, is unacceptable. I literally have to set a map destination on my iPhone using Apple Maps or Waze and run it concurrently. Ridiculous! It’s also massively buggy - my Google maps keeps recalculating the route even if I follow what it’s telling me to do. I can be driving in a straight line and it’ll recalculate - and the recalculated route is the same as I was following. The number of apps is really poor. Don’t think you’re getting anything like an android phone. No BBC Sounds app but you do get Canal+. Well that’s useful….not! Also the “ok google” is buggy and underdeveloped: try saying “hey google, turn off one pedal drive”. It works but then barks out an error message. When setting a destination I’ve had the google assistant go into a loop of asking “what value” (clearly computer code language) and when I say “hey google, play LBC radio”, it tries to stream it which it can’t because I don’t have a radio streaming app. It’s a car. Duh. It has a radio built in. It really is utter garbage and although reviewers keep saying “they’ll add apple carplay” and “it can be updated”, the truth is it’s not! As of late May 2022 as I write this, it hasn’t been updated since December 2021 which to me, says they’re absolutely not working on it and if they are, it’s the B-Team. Volvo need to ask for their money back or get it fixed and until then, think twice before buying. Oh…and I love the car. It’s awesome but if I’d know how horrid android car is, I may well have thought twice.
@pawel.wisniowski
@pawel.wisniowski Год назад
Any changes for good till today? Because... it can be updated :)
@rickiehoxton
@rickiehoxton Год назад
@@pawel.wisniowski Yes, several updates since I originally posted the above have improved things. Apple CarPlay is now available and speed cameras appear in the maps. It is less buggy but not 100%...but much better. Still no speed camera audible warnings, in the UK the speed limit indicator is next to useless - frequently shows the wrong speeds and still the need to sometimes have to rephrase myself several times to get Hey Google to do what I need it to do. Who would have known that the mighty Google with all their AI and NLP could not understand that when I say "Play the Michael Jackson Album called 'Bad'", it would only play the song and not the album. Eventually my wife worked out the exact wording but really....this is Google!! So yes, it is much better and much easier to live with. I would say it is acceptable and that I wouldn't dissuade anyone - now - from getting the car but still got some work to do. I do commend the improvements tho'.
@TechInTheCar
@TechInTheCar Год назад
Good to see those updates coming through however and Google are improving Android Automotive just like on the phones every year.
@dobrindonchev8289
@dobrindonchev8289 Год назад
So your basically saying even though it is built in it's no better than apple car play or android auto. Currently bought 2022 XC90 but they do not include this new update was kind of bummed but they do have android auto which I'm is great so hearing you say that the Google/android built in isn't great makes me feel a lot better. Side note I think they don't focus too much on it as if you see the new ex90 that will come out 2024 will have a completely new design inside and the system looks completely redesigned (bit like Tesla) so that's why maybe they not focused on improving that aspect
@rickiehoxton
@rickiehoxton Год назад
@@dobrindonchev8289 it’s worse than Apple CarPlay but it’s got better since I wrote the above. Less buggy and they added speed cameras although it doesn’t announce it to you so you just have to look out for them or use Apple CarPlay. The last update was a regression as it got really slow but the one prior to that was much better. It’s just all a bit rubbish but overall, you’re not missing out on anything if you can plug in your smartphone and use it instead.

Owning an XC60 for 2month now, and it's the worst purchase I have made in my entire life! 1- You buy a Volvo for its safety. However, for a very simple task like switching steering assist on and off, you must go to the deepest parts of the menu via the touch screen while driving. That's not what I call the safety focus of a brand! 2- Android system for cars is a joke at the moment. In the past two months, I had to hard reset the infotainment system (I learned it thanks to the Volvo owners forums) to resolve issues like Lost GPS signal, Malfunctioning Air conditioning in the middle of summer, voice command not responding etc... Have I not known about this hard reset, I had to take the brand new 90K car to dealer at least five times! 3-There are buttons that do nothing, and I have the highest spec possible. There are two on the steering wheel, as arrows to the left and right and do absolutely nothing! Why? Is it because you deleted an option or changed some setups? Then respect your customer and remove those buttons! 4- Driving dynamics aren't comparable to the ones of BMW, Build quality is not close to the one of AUDI and design is not close to GLC... Safety is what remains, and You buy Volvo because of it! Then, with that touch screen and removing every single button on the car, safety is more of the past story for Volvo! Worst and the most expensive purchase of my life!
@TechInTheCar
@TechInTheCar Год назад
Thanks for the feedback on the car! very interesting to hear from an owner. As for the Android Automotive system - I didn't have any issues myself however even I had to reset it when I had the car as the reverse camera was not working. After that it was flawless. Loss of GPS signal might simply be due to the area you were driving; maybe a tunnel or some interference. That happens occasionally on any car. Those buttons on the wheel do have a function for adjusting the distance/speed when pilot assist is on (or skipping tracks depending on the side of the wheel). As for quality I am not sure I agree. I have a new Audi and it is not like it used to be in terms of build quality. In terms of driving dynamics I haven't driven the XC60 so I take your experiences as a given.
@medi288
@medi288 Год назад
@@TechInTheCar Thanks for the reply. GPS signal was lost in my usual commute, no tunnel and always excellent signal and coverage. So I don't think its related to where I was... And it never ever happened in my BMW 3 series, Never. My BMW also never happened to have a air conditioning malfunction in middle of summer but my brand new Volvo just had, twice! I am afraid I have to disagree with you on the arrow buttons to left and right on the steering wheel. They do NOTHING! I found out that they used to be dedicated to switching between Pilot assist with steering assistance and without, in Sensus system. Now, since that functionality is moved deep in the menu (very unsafe, since you have to take your eyes from road to find and control them), they have NO function at all. On the build quality, I think it's very much subjective; a friend of mine has Brand new Audi and God it's infotainment system works smoothly! But I can't discuss about it since it's, as I said, subjective.
@ScalexCzech
@ScalexCzech Год назад
A smart car with smart infotainment requires a smart driver. You need to get to know the car, read the manual, find out what each button does and doesn't do. For the first two days, I sat in my parked car and read through the manual, familiarizing myself with every inch of my new car. If something still wasn't clear, I called the dealer - I left enough money with him that he could help me get acquainted with the car. And if someone buys a car with Android Assistant, he should learn how to use it too. Because Volvo IS safety-conscious, so there's no need to touch the infotainment at all while driving. Absolutely everything can be set by voice. The steering wheel or seat heating, the speed of the air conditioning fans, where the air conditioning should blow, the temperature can be set for each zone, I can even switch between single and dual-pedal controls with my voice while driving. I can turn the radio on and off with my voice, start Spotify with my voice and select my favourite artists or ready-made playlists. I use my voice to ask the navigation to guide me to the nearest charger, restaurant, car park or toilet. Medivet, everything you write shows your complete lack of understanding of this car. The car is perfectly fine and super safe. But it needs to be used as the makers intended. If you are a traditional driver who prefers physical buttons and doesn't want to talk to the car and doesn't want to use a tablet to control it, then this really was a bad buy. Not because the car is bad, or you are bad, but because you are incompatible with each other. You probably should have familiarized yourself with the car and its controls before you bought it. I bought a Volvo XC40 Recharge a month ago, but the month before that I was downloading all possible RU-vid videos about this car, all reviews and user opinions. Just to make sure I spend that much money on a car that fits me perfectly.

@@ScalexCzech Stop being a brand fanboy! If you pay thousands of dollars buying a brand new car, you have all the rights to expect the car works without any trouble. I think I know one or two about the cars. Have tried a volvo before buying this and fell on love with it. But all of a sudden lots of updates came and ruined the experience. Now, with your brand fanboy logic, if they change the gas pedal function to touchscreen, we should be happy and get on with it! Or if they make a car that its air conditioner doesn’t work on Summer, we should be happy again and praise them for making such STUPID adjustment. In my logic, no we should complain and give honest feedback. Now, i have one suggestion for you as well. Before starting to comment on others conversation, try to read it well and understand it, you say you understand the car well, so a simple conversation souls be easy for you. I didn’t make any complaints about voice command. What I say is that the move of steering assist control to touch screen does not make any sense, AND for your information, YOU CANT CONTROL IT VIA VOICE COMMAND. you need to TAKE YOUR EYES FROM THE ROAD and look in the screen for couple of seconds at least. This simply shows that you haven’t read your XC40 manual very well. Sit in you car again for another two days and read it again. 😂
@ScalexCzech
@ScalexCzech Год назад
@@medi288 - Well, I am very happy with my car and its handling. I don't need to make up improbable scenarios about moving functions from the pedal to the tablet. If you enjoy complaining and being passive aggressive in discussions, enjoy life in that style, but I won't be a part of it anymore.

Volvo have really made a pigs ear of implementing AAOS. Firstly, the Bluetooth Player is a joke, no ability to browse and choose music on a Bluetooth connected phone! Secondly, doesn't show what track is currently playing when say your viewing the map, not even in the central display. To swop between speed limiter & cruise control you have to go into a sub menu on the central display. No native USB pen drive music playback without a 3rd party app. The speed limit shown in the central display & head-up display is often inaccurate. A lack of apps in the Google Play Store

The problems you are having with Google and bugs are not my experience. I’d recommend (if you haven’t) factory resetting the infotainment system because if these issues are regular occurrences something is wrong. For weird behavior, you should treat it as a phone and do the things you do to fix your phone if it doesn’t do as expected. In terms of apps from the PlayStore that is down to the developer. To get BBC Sounds you might just have to email them as unhelpful as that is but you could use TuneIn radio as an alternative app for radio (other than using the actual radio). I think some of your voice control issues are simply expecting too much of Google! The Google Assistant can do more voice control better than every other car out there but it can’t do everything. Comments like this are really useful for real-world issues so thanks!

@@TechInTheCar I respectfully disagree. The car is two weeks old and I’ve already had to reboot the system because it stopped responding to “hey Google” - I should add only on the second time I used the car. I’ve never had to do that with an iPhone or had such weird behaviour or inconsistencies. As for apps - it’s android!! They should be available as they are on android phones albeit, some aspects may not work perfectly. This is what Apple does by allowing iPhone and iPad apps to run natively on the latest Mac OS. There are just too many issues. I had the petrol version of the XC40 for 1.5 years and never had as many issues despite it being pretty lousy. Sorry, it’s just not good enough in the 2020s to have such a system on a premium car.

I appreciate your feedback; I didn’t have these issues myself when I had this car for around 2 weeks. It ran perfectly and the only thing that annoyed me was having to connect my phone via Bluetooth first time instead of it auto-pairing like with Android Auto or CarPlay. The Automotive apps are restricted just like the CarPlay and AA apps are. But I agree that it should be better and you shouldn’t have issues. Have you reached out to Volvo?
