2022 Washington Old Timers MX - 50+ Intermediate Moto 2

Second moto of the 50+ Intermediate class at the 2022 Washington OTMX race in Horn Rapids Motorsports Park. Figured I would challenge myself with an even worse start than moto 1 and dumped the clutch and stalled it right out of the gate. Rounded the first turn in last place.
I made a few passes and then on lap two I jumped one of the tables and in mid-flight saw a rider down right where I was headed. I tried to course correct in a panic and thought I was going to miss rider and bike but I think I caught his hand when he rolled over. I slowed and waved frantically in the direction of the tower and the oncoming riders trying to get their attention and resumed once I saw riders stopping on the top of the table in front of him. The downed rider was Mark Lutz on the 981 KTM.
It was a pretty lonely race after that since the riders in front of me were pulling away when I slowed, and the riders following slowed to protect and check on Mark, who was up and gone by the time I came around on the next lap. He came back and rode in motos 3, 4, and 5 so I'm glad he was okay. I finished up moto 2 in 7th place.

I don't know how flaggers are suppose to be effective if they are standing hundreds of feet away from the blind jumps? I remember pre-teen kids doing a better job in between motos. Are they all union workers now? 58 now. You gained speed as a few laps went by, but I thought you were going to go give that downed rider CPR. Personally, with a start like that (I understand), and a flag staff that is non-existent,---I will just stick to trail riding for my last riding years. I lowered my 2019 YZ250 2-stroke a bit as it was insanely high. I think we had better corner speed as amateurs back in the lower sane 2-stroke days. Some of those guys look like they can't change direction with out a berm. When I got into good whooped out trail riding with a sand berm in most corners, I found out why I never really got good at MX, (at least I won a couple). Sans from not racing enough, it takes me about 10 miles to get loosened up and flowing well. I got to a speed that felt so natural on those Michigan CCC trails, using very little energy, I know I could have won a lot more races is I ever felt like that on a track. Off the bike now for almost 20 years, (just getting going again, slowly), and I am going to take my sweet azz time getting back to that feeling/function. Have you guys ever felt so good, it felt like you can push it as hard as you want, like you can do no wrong? That is where you should ride. :)

You were having a great ride. That's a tough one to take. The event should have had more flaggers to protect the down riders. There was nothing you could have done to avoid him, hope he is okay.. I can tell it was hard for you to go on but I give you a lot of credit for continuing on. Real good riding, bro! Stay safe and keep doing what you love to do.

Yeah, it freaked me out for him and the other riders behind me. He ended up riding the next 3 motos, so he must have been ok. They have a light system but he was down in a newer section of the track and I'm not sure if the tower could see him to get the caution lights on before I came around.

@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 2 года назад
58 now. I remember when I could not wait to turn 30 so I could race the 30 plus class in Michigan, they were slow. By the time I reached the age, they were mostly aging A riders and smoking the tracks. There was no beginner class for the age group classes. I think tall bikes today make cornering a lot harder. I see a lot of slow corner speed that people record and put on YT. Back in the late 80's, most C riders had faster corner speed than I see today. But we had to work on corner speed. They made the jumps closer to the corners and if you did not have good corner speed, you were not going to clear the next jump. That is why we had faster corner speed IMO. I bet this guy could make all his jumps from a dead stop at the beginning or middle of the last corner. Maybe the end of them.

Brother I was playing a bit. I also will add thes couches that we ride today have something to do with that also. Can you imagine how good two strokes would be right now if all these years of technology went into them? lighter quicker cheaper

@1tenner
@1tenner Год назад
Cool that you picked up a new bike and are getting back into it. The CRF will be fun, even on a track to a point. But you're right about the bigger jumps. Coming up short or long on the L could be disastrous with the soft suspension. Just take it easy and have fun!

The whole time I was watching this I was thinking, where the hell are the flaggers? But then I read in the comments about having a caution light setup. Is this the new normal? Have a big tower to see the whole track and one person pushes a button to turn on the caution light? I haven't raced out at Horn since Pat was running the races. Is there a link to the results for this race? I'd be curious if I recognized any names
@1tenner
@1tenner 2 года назад
Yeah, they put that system in last year I think. They still have a few flaggers, but mostly lights run from the tower I think. Since this was an Old Timers race, the results aren't posted on the Horn Rapids MX website where the post regular event results - resultsmx.com/hrmc/. They have some Old Timers results here - oldtimersmx.com/rules-results/ - but it's not up to date with the Washington event. I put the top 7 for this class in my moto 5 video description.

Thanks! Check out the first moto of the weekend. I had a scare when I tried to overtake two riders, jumping between them on a small double and the rider on the left jumped from into the middle line. It made me extra cautious about passing riders over the jumps the rest of the weekend. I was glad to see the flagger moving the direction of the downed rider and other riders stopped to warn oncoming racers.
