This video documents demolition work being done as part of modifications to the Olin & Hanson diverter barrier. This diverter barrier was installed as part of neighborhood traffic calming measures to mitigate commute traffic that would inundate the residential streets of Spar, Hanson and Maplewood Avenues. The video was taken from the second level of the now completed Santana West parking garage. This multi-level parking structure is located where the Century 22 Triple Dome theater stood for over 50 years. As soon as the neighborhood heard demolition of the dome theaters was planned to make way for a huge project, immense concern by residents, particularly those on Spar, Hanson & Maplewood, was generated over potential traffic impacts to residential streets.
Once planning began for the Santana West project began by Federal Realty Investment Trust, owners of Santana Row positioned immediately to the east of Winchester Blvd., neighbors knew they must act to protect their streets. As the Traffic & Transportation Liaison for the Winchester Orchard Neighborhood Association, W.O.N.A., I helped form and lead Traffic Calming Team comprised of residents from those three streets.
It was a long and involved process for us to review our streets, come up with designs, work with the development team from Federal Realty, the engineering team from San Jose D.O.T. Project Planning & Delivery group and Councilmember Chappie Jones & his District 1 office staff. After much time and effort this project was agreed acceptable by all parties as part of a three part solution to prevent Santana West traffic from using the neighborhood streets. The Hanson Spar roundabout, also seen in the video, and treatment of Spar at Olin are designed to eliminate access to Santana West from these three residential streets.
Please remember, these are residential streets with families, children, pets - and 25 MPH SPEED LIMITS!!!
