Certain 2023-2024 Ford Transit and Transit Trail vans (in the US approximately 76,015 vehicles) have been recalled due to the factory failing to fill the rear differential with the proper amount of fluid, causing premature bearing failure. This could result in rear wheel lockup or driveshaft separation that could cause loss of vehicle control or loss of power, which could result in a crash.
You can check to see if your Transit is on the recall list by entering your vin number at the below website.
www.ford.com/support/recalls/
NHTSA Recall Number 24V102
YOUR VEHICLE MAY HAVE AN INADEQUATE AMOUNT OF LUBRICANT IN THE REAR AXLE, WHICH IS NEEDED TO PROPERLY COAT THE INTERNAL BEARINGS. INSUFFICIENT LUBRICANT MAY CAUSE THE BEARINGS TO OVERHEAT AND FAIL. YOU MAY INITIALLY EXPERIENCE GRINDING NOISE, BEARING WHINE, A BURNT ODOR, FLUID LEAKS, AND OR VIBRATION AT VARIOUS SPEEDS FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE.
Safety Risk IF THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE DRIVEN, REAR WHEEL LOCK-UP AND POSSIBLE DRIVESHAFT SEPARATION MAY OCCUR, RESULTING IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL OR LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER. DRIVESHAFT SEPARATION MAY RESULT IN UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK IF THE PARKING BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED. THESE CONDITIONS INCREASE THE RISK OF CRASH OR INJURY.
Remedy FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS AUTHORIZED YOUR DEALER TO PERFORM AN INSPECTION OF THE REAR AXLE AND TO DETERMINE IF ADDITIONAL REPAIRS WILL BE NECESSARY FREE OF CHARGE PARTS AND LABOR.

My transit was built 5 months before the recall dates. After 5 hours of convincing two embarrassed “certified ford mechanics” that the LSD was not working by showing them the correct way to test for limited slip differentials. They opened the differential too find the clutch plates completely destroyed the less than 4K on the odometer. Ford needs to add the recall to earlier and later builds.

That is not good. Did it originally pass the recall?

Brought my vehicle to the dealership it is a 2023 Ford transit, it failed the inspection, they basically sent me on my way and told me to wait until further instruction from Ford. It’s been several weeks now and I have not heard nothing back. It is quite frustrating. I have about 2200 miles on my vehicle. About a week later, I told them that I had a rear wheel lock up and grinding noise and for them to evaluate what is going on. I wanted them to take a look at the rear axle under warranty protocol as opposed to the recall protocol, which appears to be very slow and drawn out process. Since they were not able to reproduce the issue, they told me to come and pick up the vehicle. Very poor customer support, and no plan, they want me to drive this vehicle and state that it is safe to drive when in reality it is not

As long as you dont have any noise it is probably safe to drive since they would have topped up the fluid, but the damage is done. They will be replacing it eventually once ford figures out that is the only option.

Thanks for the heads up and video. Had our trail (w/4200 miles) inspected today, dealer technician was quite amazed at the amount of metal on our plug and in fluid. We had drone/gear noise from rear end as well. Our plug looked like your “fail” example from the dealer notice. Was a quart low. Parts are on order with no eta from ford. For now parked.

Going to be a lot of people in your boat unfortunately. Glad I caught mine in time.

Why don't you add oil? Im sure you can get it OEM from Ford at an outrageous price. But at least you save the axle. Just saying...

Normally I would agree if I wasn't going to immediately take it to the dealer. I wanted it documented that it was low. Luckily in my case no damage had been done but it would come in handy down the road when there is problems like so many other people are experiencing
